TO PURCHASE TWOVESSELS j HALSCHAW STEAMSHIP LINES I CONTEMPLATE PURCHASE OF fi TWO VESSELS FOR SERVICE § OUT OF THIS HARBOR. § On Thursday at 12:50 P. M., two | tugs each with a large dredge passed | jthe jetties at Cape May Harbor. It | is rumored that they are en route 0 from New York to Chesapeake City, ! Sj 'Man-land, via Chesapeake Bay. The g .Government has appropriated $2,500,- G 1 000 for making the C. and D. Canal, a | ship canal. The Geohagan Construe- G tion Company of Brooklyn has been 1 awarded the contract to remove 6,- g 500,00 cubic yards of dirt ami to con- I struct four swinging steel bridges i With concrete bases. While the C. & £ ,D. Canal is remote from Cape May it [§ j trill mean quite a lot to the business g fjrms particularly those interested in E exporting. j The Halschaw Steams bin Company e of New York are contemplating the [| purchase of two 14-foot draft vessels g I which will be used to carry passen- g ! "ere and freight between New York, g i Cape May and Philadelphia. The C- g & D. Canal, when completed, will be a g -connecting link between Philadelphia, g : Baltimore, Wilmington and Washing- g ton. It is rumored that the Halschaw jg people will extend their shipping line E |to the ports below the Mason and Dix- fon line. This will make a complete inland waterway system and the - shorter outside route to Norfolk wiH m complete the circuit Cape 'May will no doubt become a real shipping terminal, both for export shipping of Southern Jersey and -to rush inland, the perishable products such as shellfish, fish, fruit, vegetables, etcWhen the ferry is completed between here and Lewes, Delaware, the lower counties of Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey, will have complete shipoing connections both by waiter and land. Some pessimists consider the Lewes-Cane May Ferry a dream — something to be looked for in future. The State of Delaware has appropriated $20,000 for the building of the ferry wharf at Lewes- Now it is up to the New Jersey Highway Commission to "come across." The progressive people of Caoe May will not stand for petty politics, and before the summer season of 1923 opens let all the enterprising business men, the Progressive League, the Board of Trade, the Women's Community Club and various other organizations get to- _ gether and put Cape May on the map of the commercial world as one of the I main shipping terminals of the Atlantic Coast.
