> A TRIBUTE ? One of God's noblemen was called to P the Great Beyond when, on Tuesday L night, death claimed Mr. William Porf ter of this dty. f The death of such a man, at* any p time, is always felt to be an irreparaj ble loss, I, however, remember no inr stance, since my residence in Cape ? May City, in which this sentiment has J been so deep and universal. • The sphere of eminent usefulness, ' which Mr. Porter filled, was peculiar 5 and uncommon. A high-minded and ipublic-spirited citizen, whb has, for many years devoted a large portion of ) his eminent ability to the promotion . of every design by which we and our children .could be rendered wiser and 1 has eeased from his labors. I The classification of men is a very difficult task and yet it is one we al- > most unconsciously perform. It is . not simply the result of our judgment . after a careful analysis of character. It largely belongs to our intuitions. What a man IS, is the final impression he makes on the world rather than what HE SEEMS TO BE. Genuine manhood is as certain of recocmition as hypocrisy is of detection and scorn. Making search for the foundations of this character, 1 ask you to mark the Faith which shaped and sustained his history. - He was a man of convictions, a man compacted of positives, invariably clear in opinion and firm in attitude. I ask you to consider, also, his fidelity.. He was open to conviction; if wrong, could be convinced and • swayed to the right path, for the right with him was ever supreme: but once , settled in purpose, he could not be — ""y *" h»i ww, ne could not t>e
