MANY FARMS NOW JESERTEO UNTILLED LAND GROWING UP IN BRUSH AND WEEDS WHILE FARM HQUSES FALL INTO DECAY OVER CAPE MAY COUNTY. Thousands of acres of tillable land are growing up in weeds and second growth and scores of farms with their buildings falling down from disuse are wiling the attention of County buildera to that fact that something baa been overlooked. In Fishing Creek and Green Creek and other hamlets immediately ad-, Joining Delaware Ba- the reason -Fran for the unused farm lands is that the owners and men can make far more clamming in the Bay than they can by tilling the soil. Other reasons given are that the sea shore resorts offer more inducements and the young men will not stay on the farms, those who do not find other employment locally in the county going to the larger cities. It is a fact that the most of the county's ratable.-? are on the sandy beaches where the resorts are rapidly growing in value yet it seems a shame, say the far sighted leaders of the county, that the farms should in many instances present such a sad and forlorn •appearance at the very doors of -the resorts where the world comes for amusement ' > ■ That some concerted movement will be made to get new blood into the fanning industry, and to secure men wHb will ->ut the waste lands to some use, at the same tame making the county more attractive as well as more productive, soon is a foregone conclusion. It only remains for a decision by Fate as to who will start the movement. It ma- be that the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce will take the initial step, something having been done last year in the way of advertising, yet the interest in the advertising campaign was not so great, some of the subscript*™ to the fund remaining still unpaid. The resorts have a vital interest in the fountry districts nearby because of the fresh vegetable, fruit, poultry and other farm products which are needed in abundance particularly during the summer season. The farm lands pi the county ait -not worn out except irt rare cases and even these old robbed lands can again be made productive with intensive farming. The farms for the most part are small ones suitable for the small trucker, and these kind of farms are the ones most casil>- sold to the country home seekersThe lands about Vineland, one of the most successful poultr" and agricultural districts of Southern Jersey, are no better than the lands of this county. Vineland was wrested from the wilderness and now produces' hundreds of thousands of dollars in poultry and produce alone every year. Certainly, declare the far sighted men of today who can see tomorrow for the county, Cape May County can do the same if an honest effort is made to secure the right people to tAke these - farms over. To the prospect it is easily shown " that this peninsular county is the land I «f opportunity. Three large and sev- I eral smaller resorts at his hand for markets aside from the close shipping market at PhiladelphiaNo point from the countv is far J from some fairly large town or city j and good roads gettin» better all the * time offer easy ways to travel. The t. school systems of the "nimty are fine 0 and the auto blisses stop at the coun- e try door these days to take the pupils k to the school house door. v ® The country is no longer, at least ^ not in this section, synonymous with S isolation andv ignorance. It is the most attractive . place to live for the ® man who likes close neighbors and yet the freedom of the out- of doors and independence of _elbow room.
