[Homemakers Save Fats For War Effort With the Cape May County quota fcr household fate set by the Salvage Division of the War Production Board at 5,800 pounds per month, the County Salvage Committee this week urged that all housewives save all their fats and sell them to their butchers. Fats are one of the most important war materials, according k to the War Production Board. F Glycerine is made from fats,* and gunpowder is made from glycerine. Glycerine also is used in gun recoil mechanism, ships’ steering gears, depth charge releases, and , in medicine for fighting men. ' . “We are using up glycerine faster than we are making it," according to the Salvage Committee’ aUtement. “We are ^sing up our reserve. If this continues, the time will come when we will not have enough to fight the war—when , some gun wul not fire because there is no glycerine. That is way to lose the war. “If every housewife would save ! all her kitchen fat, there would be ► sufficient. After the housewife has used kitchen fat in preparing food, she strains it through an ordinary strainer into a can. Solid | fat, she melts down. -When she > has a convenient amount, she takes it to the butcher, who pays her four cents a pound. The butcher sells r to a Tenderer for iust enough to ! cover the cost of handling. The Tenderer makes tallow and sells either to a soap manufacturer or a fat splitter. The soap maker gets glycerine as a by-product. The fat 'splitter gets glyercine by a chemical process. Both sell the glycerine

for war use.

“In four weeks after the housewife sells -waste? fat to the butcher, it may be firing an anti-aircraft » cannon. Bu*. she , must keep on ' saving and selling it, for the cannon has to keep on firing until the war is won, andSt_keeps on using

up glycerine.’’
