But the game is never over until the final whistle blows.” The county's banks had subscribed $605,000 of 7/8 certificates of indebtedness, but they were allotted 'only $405,000. This week a new issue of two per cent U. S. Treasury Bonds, maturing in 1962 became available for bank purchase. Mr. Groff estimated that this county’s allotment would be $625,000. This would bring their total purchases to $1,050,000 — $424,000 more than their
qupta.
, Referring to subscriptions by others than bank, Mr. Groff said the Ocean City response had been surprising. "The National Bank of Ocean City,” he said, "sent 250 letters
to depositors and received gratifying results in purchases. Included were a surprising number of summer people who keep allyear accounts here and purchased here, so the load bank would
get credit,"
Mr. Groff paid high tribute to the cooperation shown by Cape May County’s newspapers in giving effective publicity to the drive. “Every newspaper has consistently shown a willingness to give prominence to the drive,” he declared. “Their columns have -been wide open for as much space as we asked, and each has shown ingenuity in displaying the news reports and other material sent out. Without the support of the newspapers the drive would have a far less encouraging outlook,” Mr. Groff concluded.

Cape May County brought in an estimated 11 million pounds of fidi in 1942 and that these sports fishermen made a distinct contribution to the food supply for themselves and their neighbors. "Through their Congressman, U 16 Ocean County delegation had an appointment arranged with the Office of Price Administration. Only part of the delegation attended this meeting. George C. Warren, Jr., of the New Jersey Fish and Game Commission, Jack Lamping, of the Long Beatdi Island Board of Trade, and Mr. James, of the Department of Interior. They met with Richard A. Hamson, chief of the eligibility section of the Office of Price Administration, and Joseph Tonkin of his office. From the report I have received of this meeting, Mn Harrison knew nothing about fishing, was antagonistic to the idea and decried the food value until the delegation talked him around to its value and recogni-
tion.
“■nie same day we were in. Washington some bijght young thing thought up the idea of leasing the latest ‘gas' seal the headlines would lead us w believe that no-one could use gas to come to the seashore, but the release in fact was just a re-hash of the regulations already in effect. How am one commute from the shore to his home or office by automobile on ‘A’ coupons — th*t is. the 64 dollar question,” Jackson said. Jackson said a definite statement as to the exact number of boats, their registration and the minimum amount of gasoline they would use in a trial period must be supplied vo the eligibUity office 'A before a decision could be rendered.
Red Cross Aids Men Stationed In County The Red Cross assisted 200 sen-icemen stationed in Cape May County during the last month in personal and family problems involving illness, death, financial difficulties and other matters, Chester L. Larkins. Red Cross field director at the Cape May Naval Base, disclosed today. "This brings the total -number men served - since the opening of the office on December 15 to
604,” Larkins said.
"To illustrate the type of work being done in a great many cases, sailors receive word from home that there is sickness, death -or other matters which require their immediate presence. This office is
equipped to make loans men to enable them to
home,” Larkins added.
"During the last month 22 such loans were made for various emergencies that had arisen, totaling $375. Of course, there is no interest charged on such loans and the serviceman makes his own arrangements for repayment. To date 59 such loans have been made, totaling $1,288.25.” Mr. Larkins added that the office at the Naval Base had been furnishing comfort articles, such as razor blades, combs, tooth brushes, tooth paste, stationery, cigarettes, matches and playing c f r ^* to the patients in the Nav-
al Dispensary.
“In practically every case we could not have given aid if it had not been for the close tie-up *dth the Red Cross Chapters in the men's home towns, and especially in Cape May County,"
Larkins explained.
The Red Cross’Nat the Naval Base is acting as a symbol of
ncan people’s determin-
ation that the needs of their men on active duty will not be for-
gotten.
