Gape Theatre Opens Wed. By the Oheerrer
Florence
well-known star of the met hit show "The Children’s Hour”, in the besutifnl end amusine comedy "The Curtain Rises", the Cape Theatre will reopen for the 1942 season next Wednesday evening. The time for the curtain is 8:40. The fourth season of this theatre under the management of T. C. Upham will get under way under conditions which are causing the majority of important summer theatres to keep their doors closed for this season at least. But the Cape Theatre is fortunate not only in Mr. Upham’s persistent efforts to make this enterprise a very successful one, but more in the fact that . very few of the patrons here in Cape May have to ride in automobiles to reach the entrance. Most of those who attend on the contrary can very easily reach the theatre by strolling along the boardwalk. Even those who live out af town are largely from spots within five or teu miles. So the theatre opens a new season with excellent prospects of retaining most of .its old trade and of adding to this by making new friends among service men— officers, enlisted men, and their families—who will be heartily welcomed. For enlisted men spec-
ial rates are in order.
The opening night, Wednesday, May 27, has been set by the national committee of the Navy Relief Society as Navy Relief Night. One-half the box office receipts of the evening will go for Navy relief, and if the attendance is large enough to cover expenses, as additional sum over and above the 60 percent intake will be contributed by the management. "The Curtain Rises" has been chosen as the opening play because it is a delightful comedy that appeals to old and young and to all classes. It was a success on Broadway about seven years ago, the leading role being taken by Jean Arthur, who went front success in this to still greater success on the screen. Florence McGee is ideally fitted by type to play the young woman Elsa jgko aspires to go on the stage. | ' Playing opposite Miss McGee will be Philip Earle, who needs] no ^introduction to those who met him in Cape May last winter. He is a man of long experience in the theatre both on Broadway and in stock and both as director and
actor.
Others in important roles will be Patricia Deering, who until the week before she opens here will be playing with Gertrude Lawrence in “Lady in the Dark’’ and W. James Bedell, character man who now resides in Wildwood Crest and who was for twenty yean a leading man in stock. Mr. Bedell will be well remembered for his excellent characteriutions last summer.
