Ohio Angler Wins Prize

Cape Athlete Wine 2 Medals In Meet

Robert Simpkins, -trf Suffield, Ohio, is the first angler to be awarded the weekly prize in the seventh annual Cape May County fishing contest. Director Percy H. Jackson, in charge of the popular contest, said today that Simpkins hooked a four pound, three ounce bass while angling from the boat ''Gloria" piloted by Captain Peter Devains, of Cape May. With ideal weather prevailing and the fishing season now full swing, the weekly contest _ becoming more fascinating than ever. In addition to the weekly prize, entries received are eligible for the v final award to be made at the cpnclusion of the Contest October.

Party boat skippers from Cape May to Ocean City and or **•" Delaware Bay are beaming joy at the catches which have been recorded, Director Jackson asserted, adding that the 1942 season is destined to surpass all

other years.

Director JacKson announced that the fishermen’s train is again being operated between Philadelphia and Cape May Coun-

ty fishing ports.

Again pointing out that fishermen are not disturbed because of the war, Mr. Jackson said that the impression had been circulated that anglers must be licensed. The only license required is that of captains of boats and that all such craft in Cape May County are complying with the rules. In inviting the angler to Cape May County, Director Jackson said this county has more to offer than any other section of the Atlantic coast. He pointed to bay and surf fishing, from the piers, or small craft or deep sea fish-

ing.

GRAVES DECORATED

Your paper printed last week a letter from Carolyn Price, Past Department President of the New Jersey Daughters of Union Veterans, relative to the decoration

the War Between the States. The letter as printed would [ live to the general public the dea that none of these graves were decorated or otherwise honored. This is a deliberate distortion of the truth. The County Cape May, through my offii_, provides a flag and flower for every veteran’s grave. We are constantly on the lookout for

names of nearly seven hundred veterans buried throughout the county. At least 70 per cent of these are those of the veterans of the WAR BETWEEN THE STATES, while only about 10 per cent are those of the World War and only 2 per cent of the latter members of the Legion. 'Elach Post of the American Legion is assigned by me as County Graves Director •certain cemeteries in their community. Even this year with rationing in effect, these men carried out their programs with the intense devotion that characterizes all of their activities. Each grave was decorated in every’ cemetery and such dead were saluted with Military Honors. Such patriotic servicedemands only the greatest praise and the sincere thanks of the community, instead of a tirade

of abuse.

It was unfortunate that one K ve should have been missed year. However this year as soon as the matter was called to the attention * of the man in charge of South Dcpnis Union Cemetery, a flag and flower was pUced thereon. School athlete, won two medals in a state track meet held at Montclair on Saturday. Purnell placed first in the running high jump with a height of five feet, eight inches, and placed second in the running broad jump with a

leap of 20 feet, 11 inches. Ollie Roberson, of Middle Town-

ship, won two firsts in the meet.

He won the discus throw with heave of 126 feet, two and threequarter inches, and the 12-pound shot put with a toss of 50 feet,

four inches.

Pitman-^snared the meet title with 45W points.
