Seeks Special Treatment For Resort Areas
(Continned from Page One) remedy. Although most Naval r ionnel with whom I happen to familiar, are paying, in my judgment, normal and reasonable rentals, it is quite possibly true that in some instances there are cases of hardships -as the result of aummer rentals. Of course the view of the landlord is that he is not raising his rent, but simply renting as has been the custom always in the past, for extra rent in summer,” the Mayor explained. “The problem is further complicated from the landlord’s view point by the fact that year around rentals cannot be depended upon from Navy personnel. Such leases, I presume without exception, contain clauses releasing the lessee in the event of transfer. Thus, we have a situation, and this has occurred, where a landlord leases the property in the spring on a normal 12 months basis, only to have the property vacated too late to obtain summer rental and thus suffering a substantial loss. “What I am trying to point out is property at the seashore is an entirely special problem and has nothing to do with the normal area regulations. “I should be glad to discuss this situation with such agent as you may designate either here or in Washington, because, as you have pointed out in your letter, special treatment is undoubtedly
required.
“For many months because of - the shortage of proper housing facilities for the increasing Naval personnel here, I have strenuously urged that this area be designated as a defense housing area. 1 think this is an appropriate *time to revive this discussion. “I am taking the liberty of closing a collection of letters this phase of the problem, which 1 have heretofore sent to Washington,” the Mayor concluded.
USO Club Active In Aiding Service Men A number of activities sponsored by the Cape May USO Clut have been held during the last week at the Army camp at Woodbine, Adjutant Theodore F, Thompson, director of the club, said today. A party of young people from a Camden church visited the camp on Saturday and enjoyed a swimming party, which was followed by dancing and movies. On Sunday, the soldiers witnessed a motion picture sponsored by a cigarette manufacturer. At the local club, routine activities have been scheduled for this week to provide entertainment for service men stationed in this
area.
Tuesday night was music night, under the direction of Miss Edith Backman, Wednesday night was party night, tonight will be game night, and tomorrow there will be another club party. The weekly Saturday evening dance, with an orchestra provided by the Civilian Defense Council, will attract a large crowd, Adjutant Thompson predicted. Vesper services will be held at the club at 6:30 Sunday evening. A donation of flowers was made to the club by Mrs. Herbert F. Campbell, of Cape May Court House, this week.
Sisters Taken To Hospital Together Two sisters were taken Hahnemann Hospital, Philadelphia, yesterday in the Legion ambulance. Mrs. Marvin Oliver, of West Cape May, was going to the hospital for treatment. Shortly before she left, her sister, Mrs. Martha Hand, of 801 Washington street, fell while sweeping her porch, and sustained a broken leg. Both were taken to the hospital in the ambulance. Mrs. Hand’s leg was broken between the knee and hip. Patrolmen’s Local Elects Officers Raymond Dhue, of North Wildwood, was elected president of • the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, Local No. 59, for the fourth consecutive year at a meeting in Wildwood last week. Charles Breakall, Wildwood, was named vice president. Charles Solomon, Wildwood, was elected financial secretary; John Cunningham, Cape May, recording secretary; John Carlson, North Wildwood, sergeant-at-arms; Stanley Roberts, Winfield Inglee, Wildwood, and Mulford Bradfield, North Wildwood, trustees.

County School Superintendent Daniel J. Ricker received the check for the funds yesterday. «— share of the fund
Oscar Wilde's most famous and very delightful comedy "The Importance of Being Ernest” opened Tuesday night at the Cape Theatre. In' this current revival of this classic high comedy of brilliant lines and clever situations, the cast was as follows: John Worthing, John Byers; Algy, Philip Earle; Lady Bracknell, Frederica Going; Gwendoline Fairfax, Patricia Deering; Cecily, Florence McGee; Miss Prism, Ruth Gregory; Canon Chasuble, MacGregor Gibb; Lane, T. C. Upham; Merryman, Connie Dilks. “The Importance of Being ist” has been played thouk of times and in thousands places since its original production in England in the “Nineties". It is popular with players and playgoers everywhere. Most of the members of the cast at the Cape Theatre have appeared in this play at previous times. Mr. Earle and Miss McGee played it together in stock in Toronto and have worked in it elsewhere too. Mr. Byers was John Worthing at Southampton last summer. Frederica Going and MacGregor Gibb have been professionaly in the same parts they are playing this week. And Mr. Upham was seen as Lane last winter in Cape May, and a number of years ago was John Worthing in a production on the Theatre Guild stage In New York City. With all this experience hind them the actors were able to give a fully prepared and convincing performance on the opening night. Fine interpretations were in order from Frederica Going, Patricia Deering, Ruth Gregory, MacGregor Gibb, and John Byers. But the real laurels for acting must go once again to Florence McGee and Philip Earle, although Miss Gregory also gave a splendidly clear and original portrayal of Miss Prism. In parts in which she is right —and there are a good many of those—there are few actresses anywhere who are better than Miss McGee. As little young ladies, be they sweet, pert, or “bratty”, she can hardly be surpassed, and this is true of her in the part of the rather unsophisticated country girl whom Oscar Wilde contrasts with’ tho citified Gwen-
doline.
As for Mr. Earle, there are those who prefer hint in a straighter, more serious romantic role, perhaps even on the heavy side, in such a part as Kernmann in “The Curtain Rises", for instance. But his audiences in general feel that he does not fall far below his best as Algernon Moncrieff. He was an able support to Miss McGee. The two attractive sets were designed and executed by Mr. Gibb, who also handled the lighting effects, which were by equipment provided by Broadway Stage Lighting Company. Mr. Gibb was assisted by Mr. Byers, assistant stage manager, and by Jinny La Salle and Joseph Field, members of the stage crew. The play was faithfully and pleasingly directed bjr Mr. Earle, who chose to produce it in modem dress, which did not lessen in the least the enjoyment of the
audience.
C. Upham, director of the theatre, announced that it is uncertain when Mr. Lynds will join the company, as he has been seriously ill. The original plan was to have him play the role of Canon Chasuble, which was so well taken by Mr. Gibb Tuesday
night.
Mr. Upham also announced that a delightful new comedy entitled "The Major Had a Daughter”, by Lina Kane, will have its first production on any stage opening next Tuesday night. Several New York and Hollywood producers are interested in this play -and it may be seen later in New York, Philadelphia, and elsewhere. The Sunday night presentations of the junior group will be resumed this coming Sunday when three one-act plays will be given. They will be repeated on Monday night. Admission is at reduced rates for these shows.
