Navy I
Bond Sale
On In District "Fighting Dollar Days” commenced at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, the Cape May Naval Air Station, and throughout the Fourth Naval District on Labor Day and will continue through
September 16.
The drive is to enlist at least 10 per cent of the pay check of every civilian employe of the Navy. The purpose is twofold: First to encourage civilian employees to put aside a part of their wartime incomes for a rainy
day.
Second to curb the rising spiral of inflation by having employes lend back to their government a portion of war earnings which might otherwise be spent on civil-
ian commodities already
for which demand
supply.
Rear Admiral M. F. Draemel, commandant of the Fourth Naval District and the Navy Yard, is chairman of the campaign. Directly under him is Lieutenant H. M. Gilmore, USNR, who has been designated as Coordinator of the War Savings Campaign. Each department head district is a vice chairman of the campaign and each department is a division in the drive, having its own individual organization. Group chairmen within the departments will supervise and encourage thd Minute Men. It is the Minute Men who go on the firing line for the campaign as did their S redecessors of 1775. [inute Men who arc the individual employi ting them to sign the voluntary pledge cards for bond purchases. The pledges authorize pay deductions and when sufficient deductions have been made by the accounting department, a bond will be made out in the employe's name and delivered to him or his authorized repository.

Many New Entries In Fishing Contest COURT HOUSE — The popular weekly fishing award of the Cape May County fishing contest ended last week, Director P. H. Jackson, in charge of the event sponsored by the Cape May County Board of Freeholders, said today, but entries arc still being received to be judged for major
prizes.
Although the weekly prizes have ended, the seventh annual contest will continue until' next month: At that time, the judges have the difficult task of perusing all the entries and' deciding what species of large and unusual proportions was hooked in Cape May County waters to be eligible for the prizes of fishing equipment to be awarded. The weekly award was made by a chance drawing and those who have won will still be ii) line for the judging of contest enDirector Jackson told of having - received numerous letters from anglers, who expressed their appreciation on the ideal set up of the weekly prize. The-, incentive, they said, was indeed a good one. Fishing continues along the ooeanfront and in the bay areas. Row boats are active while pier fishing is holding the spotlight. Pier managers said they will remain open until next month. Veteran fishermen expressed their views to Director Jackson that September should be a; -good month for fishing with croakers: seabass, flounders, kings and weaks expected to run in large numbers. "Unless there is a radical change in the weather the outlook now is for fish running in great quantity. Everyone who casts a line over hooks fish these days,” Captain Robert G. Pierpont reported to Director Jackson.
Copies of announcements specifying the required qualifications for the positions, and application forms, may be secured from the secretary of the Board of U.. S. Civil Service Examiners at the postoffice in Philadelphia, from the secretary of the Local Civil Service Board, U. S. Engineer' Office, Penn Mutual Building, Independence Square. Philadelphia, or from the manager of the Third U. S. Civil Service District, Philadelphia. No written test is required. Applicants’ qualifications will be judged from a review of their experience as shown on their applications.
518 Telephone Men
In Armed Forces
New Jersey Bell Telephone men in all branches of the military service topped the 500-mark last week, more than 12 per cent of the male employees of the company. This week the service flag at telephone headquarters in
Newark bears 518 stars.
The largest proportion of telephone men represented by the flag are in the U. S. Army Signal Corps where their specialized communications training is being utilized to greatest advantage under a plan worked out by the Army with the telephone com-
panies two years ago.
The plan reflects the War Department’s view that men with specialized communications training should serve in the Signal Corps so that the Army can take •full advantage of their knowledge and experience: and it also reflects military realization of the need to keep enough trained personnel on the job to provide the ift and plentiful telephone communication essential to the total ar effort on the home front. Under the plan adopted, t Signal Corps selects telephone men on a volunteer basis for specific Signal Corps assignment in small cadres, each of which forms the nucleus for a Signal Corps unit in active service.
Many Attend Special Service At Church A large congregation attended the second weekly service for service men held at the Cape Island Baptist Church Sunday evening. Lieutenant Commander R. ] Mulford, USN, was the princip speaker of the service, taking f< his topic “Christianity As a Way of Life”. Commander Mulford is a member of the Berean Baptist Church of Bridgeton. Anthony Candelori, a member of the Convention Hall orchestra, played a violin solo which was well received. The third of the series of special services will be held this Sunday evening, followed by a fellowship hour. Frank tiarima,., a representative of the Canadian Radium and ^Uranium Corporation of New York, will, speak on “Radium and Its Human Advancement.”
