Canal May Aid Establishment Of Bay Ferry Possibility that the Cape May County canal now under construction will pave the way for establishment of a Cape May-to-Lewes ferry across Delaware Bay was indicated last week by Captain Fred Molineaux, area engineer of the U. S. War Department Corps of Engineers. The statement was made at a meeting of the Greater Wildwood Chamber of • Commerce, at which Captain Molineaux was principal speaker. Citing the canal’s value as a possible New Jersey terminus for the cross-bay ferry, which has been advocated for many years, Captain Molineaux told the Wildwood organization that he knew of no objection to establishment of a ferry slip near the canal. Senate President I. Grant Scott, of Cape May,- who introduced the speaker, indicated that it might be possible to obtain federal aid to establish a ferry line across the bay after the war. Tracing the progress of the canal project over a period of seven years when exhaustive hearings on the proposal were held at Cape May Court House, Captain Molineaux described the circunlstances surrounding the actual construction. After numerous surveys, the present route was selected as the best of three principal routes suggested, Captain Molineaux explained. “The money which is ‘being spent is not the money from Cape May County," he said. “It is California money as well, since the canal will be of vast benefit to the entire nation. “We hope to complete the canal in two months. We have 500 men employed, and night work is being done. “The Anny is building temporary spans, and the state later on will construct permanent bridges. Our real estate section has accomplished a great deal, and on the whole the people in- Lower Township are satisfied. We may take a piece of land, but we pay for it. It is not like Hitler and Mussolini who take everything they want without asking and don't pay anything for it. “In this undertaking, where lands arc involved, the property owner has the recourse in law, in the event he is not satisfied.” Captain Molineaux described the jetty construction at the bay end of the canal, which, he said, would be 10 feet high and 500 feet apart. “The canal will be of vast benefit to all boatmen and will eliminate the danger of the ‘Rips’,'’ he added.

"Barges will use this waterway and it will eliminate submarine attacks on shipping.’’ The canal will be three and onehalf miles long and will have a width of 100 feet at the top, with a depth of 15 feet. The waterway will be maintained by the federal government. Speaking of the final link in New Jersey's inland waterway system, Captain Molineaux urged that steps be taken to begin projects for the improvement of the rest of the inland waterway between Cape May and Manasquan Inlet, so that there would be a continuous smooth passage for more than 100 miles in New Jer-

ANTHRACITE DEALERS:

We must have equitable distribution of available supply from this date -forward. We therefore request the cooperation of your organization in withholding further deliveries to those who now have ample domestic anthracite to meet their early Winter requirements; and to curtail deliveries to others to a basis of only that quantity necessary to meet their early Winter requirements. When the demand becomes less urgent we shall modify or withdraw this request. There should be an ample supply of anthracite to take care of consumers' needs this Winter, but it must be spread so that all will have a share. Anthracite must be hoarded against requirements of the succeeding Winter. We shall expect prompt and full coope^tienon the part of your organization in carrying out our request.
