County Students Form Junior Army To Help Scrap Drive
COURT HOUSE — Organizing: under the recently formed statewide Junior Arrtiy, school children of Cape May County this week are preparing to "get in the scrap 1 ' as their part of the na-tion-wide move under way in all schools, Dahiel J. Ricker, county school superintendent, said today. Under the suggested plan for a state-wide Junior Army, the chief state school officer will be the Commanding General. County and city school superintendents will be designated as colonels; principals of schools will be majors, and teachers will be cap-
tains.
School rooms have been asked to organize and have lieutenants, sergeants, corporals and privates. Pupils will write letters to prospects and make personal calls at every home and farm for solicitation of scrap materials. Scrap piles will be made at certain desiganted points. Large items of scraj) may be transported to the pile by a local salvage comniHtee or by trucking companies, Ricker explained. Finally the scrap will be sold to junk dealers, and the proceeds from this sale may be used for school projects or distributed directly to participating children in war savings stamps, the County Superintendent added. Announcing the program late last week, Mr. Ricker released a letter from President Roosevelt, in which the Chief Executive said: “The boys and girls of America
can perform a great patriotic service for their country by helping our National Salvage effort. Millions of young Americans, turning their energies to collecting all sorts of scrap metals, rubber and rags can help the . tide in our ever-increasing war. effort. "They will earn the gratitude of every one of our fighting men by helping to get them the weapons they need—now. I know they will do their part.” Donald M. Nelson, chidf of the War Production Board, recently said: 'America’s children in thousands of cities, towns and villages across the country can make an enormous contribution to the nation’s scrap collection effort.’’ Lessing J. Rosenwald, director of the Conservation Division of the War Production Board stated: “Efforts of school children can produce a huge tonnage of the vital scrap iron and steel, rubber and o.ther materials that must lie had at once for war production. The proposed plan of canvassing and collection will give every school boy an girl a desired opportunity for patriotic participation in backing up their fathers and brothers at the fighting front.’’

A S the war effort speeds up, the load on telephone wires grows. We can’t build more lines because copper, nickel and rubber are shooting, not talking materials right now. You can help to make the most of what service there is by avoiding unnecessary
calls, specially ‘Long Distance’, and being brief when you must call. Every call you save helps make room on the lines for messages that may speed planes, ♦anW* and munitions to our fighting forces. * Bmy Umiltd Sltltl War Bondi and Stamp! it
