Not an ounce of scrap metal is going to waste while Jersey Central men are on the job, for they have thrown themselves into the salvage effort with a gusto. No bit of metal is too small, and no task too large for them to handle. Linemen are retrieving hundreds of pounds of copper a month just from odds and ends of wire and cable. At our Morristown plant engineers located underground T>ipes on old maps and dug them up. In Summit old boilers and other equipment from the dismantled electric plant lay bhried in the old bed of the Passaic River long since filled in to extend the pole yard. The men got together, reasoned out where the treasure was hidden, and exhumed 27 tons of it. Our ga& department has been making a very careful check of obsolete equipment, salvaging metal wherever possible. In Long Branch iron columns originally installed in 1870 were removed and scrapped. Throughout the territory employees have been building up the scrap piles, barrels of brass lamp bulb bases, flash light batteries, nut and bolts, broken fittings, valves', lead, tin, and everything which might possibly be of value. In our Allenhurst warehouse, once a large trolley barn, building department employees have been taking up the old rails and switches, now buried under a built up cinder floor. In the past six months more than 500,000 pounds of metal thus have been recovered and poured into the war effort. Our men are doing a job, for they know that’s one way of getting in the scrap!
