(Homemakers fo Save Fats r For War Effort With the Cape May County ! quota for household fats set by , the Salvage Division of the War r Production Board at 6,800 pounds “ month, the County Salvage nittee this week urged that all housewives save all their fats and sell them to their butchers. Fats are one of the most important war materials, according to the War Production Board. Glycerine is made from fats, and gunpowder is made from glycerine. Glycerine also is used in gun recoil mechanism, ships’ steering gears, depth charge releases, and in medicine for fighting men. .“We are using up glycerine faster than we are making it,” aceording.to the Salvage Committee'! /statement. "We are using up our reserve. If this continues, the time will come when we will not have enough to fight the war—when some gun will not fire because there is no glycerine. That is a way to lose the war. “If every housewife would save L all her kitchen fat, there would be r sufficient. After the housewife has used kitchen fat in preparing food, she strains it through an ordinary strainer into a can. Solid , fat, she melts down. When she > has a convenient amount, she takes it to the butcher; who pays her four cents a pound. The butcher sells r to a renderer for iust enough to cover the cost of handling. The renderer makes tallow and sells either to a soap manufacturer fat splitter. The soap maker f glycerine as a by-product _ v Thi . splitter gets glyercine by a chemical process. Both sell the glycerine for war use. ■ “In four weeks after the housewife sells wasUf fat to the butcher, it may be firing an anti-aircraft L cannon. But she must keep on * saving and selling h, for tha^cknnon has to keep on firing until the war is won, and it keeps on using up glycerine.” farm Labor Facts Are Revealed By Survey COURT HQUSE —Cape May County has 1&3 vegetable larms, 87 I poultry farms, 66 general, 23-dairy and six fruit farms, it was disdosed in a farm-tofarm survey conducted recently by the Extension Service Volunteer Corps. Hie section of the survey devoted to labor requirements showed that 640 family workers are needed for 1943. according to estimates of county farmers. One hundred and seventy full-time hired workers will be needed. Other estimates of labor required for the current year follow: Seasonal workers, 'men, 180; women, 60; boys and girls, family, 120;.boys and girls, not of the family. 100. “Taken as a whole, these farms at that time intended to increase production one per cent,” said Henry H. White, county agricultupd agent "Poultry was to in_prea»e nine per cent and fruit two per cent Intended decreases were vegetables two per cent and dairy products eight per cent. “The farmers listed in order of .importance their chief bottlenecks or problems as labor, fertilizer, feed and supplies, trucks and equipment and machinery.” Of family workers who have left the ■ farms in Cape May County; 64 per cent have gone into the Mined forces. 21 per cent into industry and 16 per cent to other
