STATE OPA CHIEF RES
Kcrney Quits As OPA Head Fer Jersey
NEWARK -James Keroey. Jt. today announced his resignation as state director of the Office of Price Administration effective May 15, the date which marks his completion of one year of service as head of the office “
New Jersey.
In his letter of resignation to Sylvan L. Joseph, regional administrator of OPA. Kerney explained it was necessary to sever ms connection with OPA because his one-year leave of absence as editor of the Trenton Times Newspapers was over, and that “the severe shortage of manpower has created demands which compel me to return to my job as editor of the Times.” . In reviewing the achievements of his office during his year of tenure he considered “most significant" the fact “that the entire rationing and price control program in New Jer handled without any . fluence whatsoever either in this office or in,the local boards." Praising the “fair and industrious" manner in which the approximately 3,000 volunteers have carried on the OPA programs, Kerney cited this as “ready proof of what Democracy can achieve.” He declared that the public has readily appreciated the need for fationing and price- control “as a vital part of our war economy,' and that they have been completely cooperative, readjusting “their lives to these nei mands, despite complicated lations, devious rules, and difficult conditions." Prior to his appointment by Leon Henderson last May as state director, Kerney had for several months as Deputy Administrator to Robert W. Johnson, then state rationing aifministrator, now vice chairman of the War Production Board charge of the Smaller War Plants Corporation.
