SUCCESSION PLANTING,
FERTILIZING AND INSECT CONTROL
By Dr. Charles H. Connors N. J. College of Agriculture The time is fast approaching when the first harvest in your Victory Garden win begin. This means that preparations should be made for the planting of the late crop, supplementary fertilizing of the garden to aid vegetables,. not yet developed, control weeds, especially quackgrass and dusting and spraying to rid the garden of insect pests. Home gardeners who sowed irly peas may be harvesting them within the next week or two. Keep them picked close and then
just as soon as the last have
been harvested, while the
are still succulent, apply a little fertilizer, one pound to 80 feet
of row, and turn the soil digging the vines in. If they have
not dried much, rotting will start
almost at once if thi
moist, and in a week or 10 days it will be safe to plant late crops in the row. These plantings can be short season corn, snap beans, late cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, rutabagas, and a few weeks hence, late spinach. It is by keeping all the land working that the greatest yield from the
garden will be obtained.
This may be a good time to add some supplementary fertilizxer to the garden. If the soil was prepared according to the 1943 New Jersey Victor)- Garden Manual, sufficient fertiliser was recommended to carry the plants through the season. However, soil which has not been used as garden for a number of years may be low in plant food materials and additional fertilizer
needed. If the foliage

be used instead of the dust. small gardens, the dust will be much more convenient to apply and as effective as sprays applied with small equipment. The Mexican uean Dee tie is another insect which abounds in moot gardens. The first sign of these beetles is when holes < pear through the leaves made the adults and the skeletonising of the leaves by the larvae. Start dusting at once with rotenone dust, using duster that will apply the material to the un-
derside of the leaf.
Corn may now be sufficiently advanced so that we can begin th control of the com earworm. A special oil containing pyrethrum is available for this purpose. It can be applied by a force oiler that has been adjusted, by means of a cork, that has bee® pierced, on the plunger, to deliver one-quarter of a teaspoonful at each pressure on the plunger. The oil is applied at the opening in the husks through which the silks issue, about five to seven days after^the silks appear. Group life insurance, although only 33 years old, now insures 12,500,000 workers of the U. S. A. in 32,800 different companies or
employe groups.
