nbson, Cape Native, Dies; Was Architect DOYLESTOWN, PAs—William Alexander Dobson, a leading naval 'architect 'and a founder of _ the American Bureau of f ‘ e ig, died in Doylestown unday. He was 89. Born in Cape May, his first position was as an apprentice ' draftsman in the hull department ■. of the Rouch Shipyard in Chester, Pa Later he was with the Bureau of Construction and Repair, f U. S. Navy, leaving that position I • to. become assistant to the L dent of the Cramp Ship ar [• gine_ Building Co. v He was the designer of several American and foreign warships and several passenger vessels. Among them was the cruiser Brooklyn, completed in 1896, Rear i Admiral Schley's flagship at the | battle of Santiago. He retired when the Cramp yard closed in 1926, but while, there he designed several ships constructed during the first World War. He made two trips to Russia in connection with the anlargement of the Russian navy and designed and supervised the building of the Russian fjattle«^ahip Retvizan and the cruiser j Vafiag at Cramp's, Among other vessels he designed were the Turkish cruiser Mefidiah and the passenger vessels Great Northern and Northern Pacific, one of which held the American speed record for troop transports during the first World War. The son of Rev. A. T. Dobson and the former Hannah Marcy, of Gape May, he attended private schools and the Chester Academy. His mother was a sister of Dr. V. M. D.'Marcy, first master , of Cape Island Lodge, No. 80, F.

and A. M.

His wife, the late Kate Ledward Dobson, died some years ago. He is survived by two sons, James L and William, and three • daughters. Mrs.. S. Weir Lewis, Miss Katharine Dobson, and-Mrs. Walter Cochran, of Doylestown, with whom he made his home. Funeral services were held Saturday at the home of James L. j Dobson, of Germantown.
