Charles DuBeck, 163, of the Section Base, scon by a technical knockout over J. C. Rossi, of the Naval Air Station, in one minute, twenty seconds. Rossi was a last-minute substitute to replace Orick Lewis, of the Coast Guard. Pete Daniels, 165, of the Naval Air Station, scored a technical knockout in 55 seconds over Anthony Torre, 165, of Hedron 9 in the second bout of the evening. Joe Connors, 189, of Naval Air Station, bowed to Joe Lembo, 187, of the Section Base, who took the decision in the first boot. DuBeck, Campanelli and Barmak won Cape May Naval Base championships in bouts held at the recreation hall on April 20. Their titles were not at stake Tuesday night Title matches will be held sometime in the fuBoxing was first introduced at the Naval Base here in January, 1942, by the Naval Air Station. Two shows were presented that month, but the sport was discontinued due to inadequate '* cilities for training. In the exhibition matches, Eddie Hocevar, the fighting marine, a veteran of the fight ring, battled George ElPaso, a Coast Guard who won the Philadelphia Inquirer middleweight championship last year. Jack Lowery, another veteran boxer now stationed in Cape May, gave a three-round exhibition with Jim Towmen, who is stationed aboard one the Navy boats here.
Awards Given To Athletes Awards were presented to Cape May High School athletes last week as the school’s 1943 athletic program came to an end. Varsity letters were presented to Donald Bailey, Rudy Antonio, Frank Er.gman, William Matthew: Stewart Cresse, Harvey Wi Hams,- Bob Hollmgseead, Eugene Taylor, Joseph Mariani, Wilson Rea, Jack McPherson, William Weinberger and A. Mitchell Brooks, manager, for baseball. Baseball jayvee letters w presented to Jack Dunne, Harvey Hawn, Joseph Murray, Marshall Howey, Jack Needles, Bill Guram, Dixon Guram, Bill Burgin, Edwin Miller, Dick Fell and Robert Ryder. Awards were presented to 12 boys for their participation in the interclass track and field meet which was held May 26 and which was won by the Junior class team. Those who received awards were Brannin Douglass, K e n n a r d Brown, Allan Shubert, Martin B lac knell, William Schowald, Harvey Williams. Carrow Thibault, Ronald Barber, William Mathews, Clarence Cooper, Edward Doran and Jack Trout. Track and field varsity letters were presented to Robert Cannone, Charles Weckman, Jack Kaighn, James Dunne and George Purnell Awards were presented to the members of th* Sophomore girls’ volley ball team for winning the intramural league aeries. Those who received awards were Joan Sta tie 11 and Frances Krula, co-captains, Nancy Sharp, Paulette Snyder, Patricia Lawsoft, Connie Dougherty, Bernice Howard, Jane Muagrove, Jean Shirley Hoover, Eleanor Conway, Betty Denny, Helen Bradley, Mary Baldwin and Isabelle Hand.
MARK CHILDREN'S DAY The Children's Day exercises at the West Cape May Union Chapel were under the direction of the younger classes with Miss Maizie Lafferty's class of girls charge of the service afternoon. Martha Jane Phillips acted as superintendent; William Hawley read the responsive reading; a flag drill was presented and pieces were spoken and several solos rendered. Richard Reeves, guest speaker, was presented with a large basket of flowers. Bibles were given to the members of the Sunday School who graduated from high school this year by the women’s Triangle Class and the .men's Circle Class. The recipients were Betty Weldon, Virginia Shaw, Robert Lein un yon, and Robert and Albert PhiQipB. An attendance of one hundred was reported.
