Jhai tSAewAhA ... The recent strike at the Brewster Aeronautical Corporation, which held up production of planes, unnecessarily, is one of the most disgraceful exhibitions of the lack of responsibility of organized labor in recent months. There have been others ... Too many
others.
Irt the Brewster strike, the workers displayed indifference and open violation to and of federal laws designed to prevent hampering the war effort by
strikes.
While we agree that labor organizations have a definite place in the scheme of things, and serve a valuable purpose in protecting the interests of labor, we, like millions of other patriotic Americans, are indignant when labor organizations flaunt themselves tn the face of a national crisis. The trivial reason for such a strike—there was no dispute about wages or treatment, nothing but a minor squabble over guards’ seniority—makes the break in needed production more criminal. While our boys are fighting and dying on the battlefields for $50 a month, it is nothing less than criminal for any of us at home to interrupt their supplies, their chances by bickering over anything as unimportant as the dispute which caused the Brewster strike. The Brewster strike is a horrible example of selffishness and irresponsibility. It has done much damage to labor's position in the public mind. It has helped fan the flames of a reaction against labor unionism which may in time engulf all labor organizations, the good as well as the bad. With public attention focused on labor as a result of the Brewster strike interesting questions arise. In New Jersey, the Democratic candidate for governor is Mayor Vincent Murphy, of Newark, a prominent labor leader and a labor candidate. We wpuld be pleased to see Mayor Murphy come out with a courageous declaration of his position. S S' • • • # Uhnk Oa Jighi TYLuddk The work-or-fight edict of the War Manpower Commission and the Selective Service Administration K *s a tremendous problem right in the laps of milOf men under the age of 38. — Regardless of their marital status or of the number of dependents, the WMC and their local draft boards have told them bluntly that they are subject to military service unless they are employed in an essential industry by October 1. After the edict was issued, federal authorities anticipated a mad rush to war plants and other essential industries. To date the transition has been surprisingly slow. The reason is obvious. With Congressional leaders loudly proclaiming that they will not permit the drafting of fathers after Congress reconvenes this month and with war work purely temporary, many men—particularly fathers— are reluctant to give up whatever security they now .have for the highly questionable future offered by war work. » That plus the ever-present possibility that Congress may void the entire set-up for drafting fathers has deterred many men from making a change. If their services are really needed either by the armed forces or by war industries, the federal government should stop the dilly-dallying and tell them so in so many words, without leaving so much to chance. Only in that way will the men of the nation answer the call en masse. Few people want to shirk their duty, but no one wants to gamble everything on the shifting policies that have come from Washington in recent months. WiihhoLding J-hom Whom? “The new 20% withholding tax developed a sudden and unexpected hitch. Many aiittle businessman now discovered that when his employees balked at smaller paychecks, he had to pay the tax himself or find new
workers.
“If an employer absorbs the tax, this amounts to a wage raise for the worker, and as a raise it must have the War Labor Board’s approval to be legal. Employers of fewer than eight workers are exempt from WLB rules. Little businessmen in the Manhattan area alone, reported tbe New York TIMES, have been forced to absorb taxes that will run to millions of dollars a year. In effect, thousands of workers are thus on a strike against paying taxes to their government”—Article from TIME Magazine. The withholding tax is a smart way for the government to have its taxes collected ... With most of the trouble and expense being shifted from Uncle Sam’s agencies to the already overburdened shoulders of the business men of the nation. It is, in effect, an admission of the inability of the government to collect present income taxes from wage
earners.
In Cape May. too, there are and have been cases where employees refuse to allow employers to.deduct the withholding tax from their paychecks. If they do, they quit. Faced with the worst labor shortage in its “story, coupled with a season that demands all the workers that can be had, local business men in some instances have done the only thing possible . . . they have dug into their own pockets to pay the withholding taxes of their employees. And by so doing, they have violated the WLB regulations if they have more than eight employees. Here is a situation the Treasury Department didn't anticipate: What will be done about it... what can be done about it ... is a question that must be
