ONSERVATION of fuel manpower, equipment
and materials is a 'must' for the United States if we are to achieve the maximum war production every American wants." This is the theme of a joint statement by Harold Ickes, Joseph Eastman and Donald Nelson. In order to accomplish this a result, it becomes necessary to ask all citizens to voluntarily cooperate by avoiding waste of coal, petroleum, water, gas, electricity, transportation and communications. At the Government's request, therefore, we urge all ouT customers to cooperate in this vol-
untary conservation program. There is no shortage of elec-
tricity as such, either for war needs or for essential civilian
use, but electricity is made largely from fuel and certain critical materials are required in connection with its production and use. No effort should be made to curtail uses of electricity necessary for public safety and health, including eyesight conservation or for production purposes. You will be obeying the plea of your Government if you simply avoid waste of electricity. The joint statement referred to concludes with these words; "The campaign will be voluntary. Cooperation of these industries in asking the public to use their services only as absolutely necessary represents a real sacrifice by them. We ask the American public to appreciate that sacrifice and to give them and the war effort enthusiastic and unstinting cooperation as this campaign develops."
