The difference between (In -tuff's of Brussels | and J apestry. then, is jute in th* place of a part of the ! 'nie fare of Brussels and I I apestry . Uith. is a mass of | loops of colored woolen yarn hcldlastby the hidden frame- ; work of cotton and jute be- | low: and the colors form the ; carpet's figure. The car- ! pets goodness as to tlur ability depends on the making. of course, but mainly on the wool in the loops and what is under the loops. One judges Tapestry by uie number of loops to the inch. The best h*s ten : the poorest down to six. Turn it over, and look at the lack. The larger the mesh in the frame-work, the more sparse the loops and the wool on the face. What is under the face? What effect does it have? The loops on the face of Brussels a necked bv wool below. Thtnoops on the face of Tapestry are backed by jute. Wool is soft, and jute is hard. The wool on the face, of course, wears longer against a back of "yielding wool than against a back of unyielding jute. So Brussels wears longer than Tapestry. How much longer ? By as much as._the back of woo! is gentler to the trampled loops tban jute : so much ; ! no more. It isn't soft enough to have the difference felt by thq foot in use. The maker's , object in using wool in -ead of jute is only to make a softer bottom to wear against. The luxurious softness one feels with the foot comes only of carpet-lining. This, back of wool in , Brussels has another consequence. It is the source of colors to make the carpet's pattern. It consists, or rather the wool of the Brussels cap-pet consists, of several yarns of different colors lying side by side in .little bundles. At every tenth-of-an-inch or s^ one out of the bundle of colored yarns is looped above : aitd the yarn that is taken . to formthe loop is the yarn of the color the jVHttern requires just there. Now that is the whol,e of the. Brussels ! fabric. The Tapestry colors are printed one after another on
one continuous There's nothing mone wonLoops are pjade on yarn, one after another : " colors are gauged to form the pattern as the loops are made ! Unravel a bit of Tapestry, and watch the loops as they- disappear. The pattern is on the .yarn, three' times longer! Now, by taking, the pattern out, you sec how it jgot in. The yarn was printed. The pattern enlarged three-fold was printed on the yarn itself ; and, when the yarn is 1 looped in the weaving, the pattern appears ! Incredible true! And now you see why the pattern is sharpr^xact, in Brussels; and a little shady, inexact, in Tapestry. There is no other difference in look the two. The grades of Brussels: ••five-frame," " four- frame," •tc. — Not to go into difficult reading, "five-frame '1 means thai the bundles consist of ' five yarns ; " four-frame " means four yarns ; and so on. The number of "frames" is the proportion of wool in the carpet its body, closeweight and softness — v alue and durability.
