California Jurtloe. Hubert n. Vonmti In bin ■P<i>ular : Tribunal," says that wlih .the flral greai . rush to tlie ji.'ltl mi icr of California | e^riii. Evi'rjboiiy'^was sb otiErwmcd I with g.'ld-geltinjr that at first litllc attiv port was given to the courts of Justice, j an J criminals were rarely punished. At I length the better men of the community I roused themselves for vigorous action, j and formed vigilance commltecs to sup. j press crime. The San Francisco com1 miitce was must powerful and fully or. i ganized and Us methods are clearly Hlusi Ualoil hy its course with Bam Whlltaker. - WtrHtairer became huun'u to the crwnmittic as one of the most skillful of a certain ha.ul of criminals and they determined to bring him to punishment. Placing their officers on his track, they traced him from one hiding place to another; but at lust he was arrested by the sheriff of one of the lower counties Of the state and brought by him to San Francisco to be delivered to the legcl amhoriffai." But on arrival the sheriff by mistake stepped into the office of a business man, who was in sympathy with "the vigihtnee movement, ajid said that he had a prisoner to deliver to llic sheriff of San Francisco, supposing that he was talking to the officer. The mistake was explained, and the merchant then stepped over and told a member of the committee that Whlltaker was on board a steamer laying at the wharf. The member at once hurried down, and inducing another to accompany him. boarded the steamer, and found the captain at breakfast. "Captain, have you TVhHtakcr on board r1 "What's that to you?" growled the captain. "Wo want blm," was the significant "Have you the authority to lake htm ?" grinned the captain. "Yet." "Go down to the bold and gel hllll." Descending, they found Whiltakcr wiilt his legs Ironed. "Where to ?" demanded the prisoner. Whiltakcr assented, but on reaching the wharf held hack. "Whore are you going?" void he. "Come along; it's all right," was the reply- jia ^ yet tearful, and was marched straight to the quarters of the dread committee of vigilance. When "Whlltaker was brought into the committee-room lie wot subjected (o a series of searching questions, but his only reply to everything was a short, blunt negative. "This won't do," said one of the members. "That is no way to examine this man. You catrt Intimidate him. Do you not see that he is strong-willed, fearless and of iron nerve?" ; "Weil, examine him yourself if yon

like "Very well; 1 will do It- I think I more of human nature than you do— to-day at all events." Accordingly, he too |p a seat besid^ Whlltaker and bc'gan: "What is your nationality?" "1 am an Englishman." "Have you aVfaUier living ?" "Yes." "Any sisters F' "Two," said the poor fellow, already " Whlltaker," said his examiner enra- ' cstly. Think of it— misery, disgrace death !" "O God 1 " he cried. -as if now, with the tears that began to flow, his very > soul was wrenched; "1 have been bad, Tery bod; but let me tell you about iu" . "Stop; listen to me. Do not make any confession with the expectation that it will mitigate in the least your punishment If found guilty. 1 feel for you, but feeling and duty I divorced before entering upon this mission. I will leave you now and return In an hour." The inquisitor then set a mug of ale s into the prisoner.and took a position whore he could watch him unobserved. Whiltakcr seemed much disturbed, and at time* apparently suffered great agony - of mind. Solitude seemed unendurable to him. Ixmg before the hour had txpifoa iu aodrSeeper appearedT "Whittakcr says.he must sec." The world has bunted me as though I was a monster; you alone have spoken to me as to a human being. 1 must make a confession to yon; if not I shall burst," and a long record of crime was bare. While he was yet a prisoner In the of the vigilance committee, Wlilttaker was rescued from the committee by the sheriff of Ban Francisco and placet! in Jail. But the Jail •» soon broken into and the prisoner recaptured. He was thrust into acarriagc that stood in waitlng-.-the driver plied bin whip and the horses dashed off at the top of their speed."
