OCEAN CITY SENTINEL. THURSDAY, MARCH 7, 1895. We shall be glad to receive items of news and communications of interest to this community and our readers everywhere. All communications should be accompanied with the full name and address of the writer, not necessarily for publication, but a guarantee of good
faith.
LOCAL NEWS. All hail! the first month of the gentle Spring. The election for Borough officers will be held on Tuesday next. George Hayday, Jr., of Atlantic City, was on the Island on Tuesday. Miss Vetta Risley is spending a season with her parents in this city. Candidates can procure election stickers at the SENTINEL office at short
notice.
The regular monthly meeting of Borough Council will be held to-morrow evening. Henry Foulds, of Philadelphia, was on the Island Thursday looking after his cottage. Charles Pryor and family, of Atlantic City, are guests at the residence of Lewis Risley and wife. Mrs. E. V. Corson, of Atlantic City, has been spending a few days with her parents in this city. Robert Fisher has taken occupancy of his new office on Asbury avenue, north of Seventh street. Alonzo Cotton has purchased a lot on Asbury avenue, between Eighth and Ninth streets, of John D. Boice. Smith & Sons are painting the addition to Illinois Cottage, corner Sixth street and Asbury avenue. John Brower has been awarded the contract for painting The Emmett, corner Eighth street and Central avenue. Captain Charles A. Campbell has purchased another lot on Central avenue, between Eighth and Ninth streets. Miss Emma McCabe and niece, of Dover, N. J., were guests of Daniel Risley and wife a few days this week. George L. Horn and daughter, of Philadelphia, spent a few days last week viewing the improvements in this city. Contractor Abel D. Scull is building a cottage on the rear of his Central avenue lot, between Sixth and Seventh streets. E. B. English, Joseph F. Hand and Jacob C. Steelman are having their lots on Central avenue, near Tenth street, graded. The March meeting of the Ocean City Building and Loan Association will be held in Steelman's Hall next Saturday evening. Mrs. William L. Smith, who has been lying dangerously ill at her residence at Thirty-fourth street, is slightly improved at this writing. The foundation for Mrs. Lewis' cottage on Central avenue, south of Ninth street, has just been completed by Messrs. Stonehill & Adams. J. H. Slaughter, of Chester, Pa., who owns the boarding house at the corner of Sixth street and Central avenue, was here on Tuesday looking after his possessions. Mrs. Isaac Lee and John W. Smith and wife were in Seaview over Sunday, having been summoned there by the death of the mother of Mrs. Lee and Mr. Smith. Improvements are being made to the interior of the building at the east corner of Seventh street and Asbury avenue, preparatory to the opening of a drug store. The election to decide the question of bonding the Borough to build a city hall will be held to-day. There should be no stay-at-home voters. Let every man turn out and cast his ballot. Casper Pennock, of Lansdowne, Pa., will build a cottage on Central avenue, north of Fourteenth street. Nicholas Corson was Monday awarded the contract for the erection of the same. Election is approaching. Caucuses will soon be held. In order that good men shall occupy our public offices, let all voters attend the preliminaries and nominate men of honor and integrity--men who will fill the offices, not for self-honor, but to the best interests of the city. Mrs. J. A. McClure, Mrs. Jesse Rapp, Mrs. Fred Rapp and Miss Elizabeth Rapp gave a musicale a few evenings ago at the residence of the former in Philadelphia, the proceeds being for the building fund of an Episcopal Mission, which is to be erected in this city. Refreshments were served in the dining room, which was decorated in red. The entertainment proved a great success in every way. A large number of the summer cottagers of Ocean City were present. Nearly $50 were netted for the fund. Accept Our Thanks. We have received from Mayor H. G. Steelman, who displays much talent as an amateur photographer, an excellent photograph of our cottage on Central avenue, near Seventh street. The picture is perfect in every detail, and we take this mode of expressing our thanks to Mr. Steelman for this generous act. It will ever be a mute reminder of our friend's thoughtfulness. LOST.--Gold spectacles and case on Wednesday evening, February 27th, between railroad station and Third and Wesley. Finder please return to H. H. Bodine and be rewarded.
ATLANTIC COUNTY GLEANINGS. News Notes Gathered Through the Villages for the "Sentinel."
ENGLISH CREEK.
John H. English is quite ill.
Captain E. A. Smith is confined to his bed, suffering with his back, which
was injured by falling off a load of hay. Nicholas Clayton is a candidate for road overseer. The Aid Society of Asbury M. E. church held its meeting last week at the residence of Somers L. Albertson. A fine treat was served.
E. S. Ingersoll and wife gave a dinner
party on Friday. Among those present were Rev. F. A. Howell and wife, Postmaster Lee and wife, Captain J. B. Ingersoll and wife, L. H. Smith and wife,

Peddlers will soon be required to have a license to sell their wares in this township.
Interesting and profitable meetings are being held at the M. E. church. Mrs. Maria Lee, who has been suffering from a sprained ankle, is improving.
The caucus was fully attended.
I have on hand several small cottages which I will trade for lots located between Sixth and Twelfth streets, Ocean City. I also have some good building lots on which I will erect cottages for any one wishing to invest in a home by the sea. Terms reasonable, and first mortgages taken on the properties when desired. Correspondence solicited. ABEL D. SCULL, Builder.
RICHLAND. Fire Monday destroyed a dwelling owned by Thomas Park and occupied
by Andrew Baker and Herman Hubler.
Loss, $1500.
SMITH'S LANDING.
Charles Winner, aged 74 years, died on Wednesday last. The funeral took place from his late residence on Saturday morning. Interment at Pleasant-
ville Cemetery.
SEAVIEW.
Mrs. Mary Smith, aged 84 years, died on Thursday night after a lengthy illness. Deceased had been a consistent member of Bethel M. E. church for over
fifty years. The funeral took place on
Sunday at Zion church, Rev. Mr. Warthman conducting the services. The departed one had been a widow for thirty years. She leaves ten children, four
daughters and six sons.
BAKERSVILLE.
Mrs. F. A. Baker, of Camden, has returned home from visiting relatives in this place. Captain John Fifield, who has suffered another stroke of paralysis, is
slowly recovering. Great relief was felt among our people when word was received of the safe arrival of Somers Adams, of the schooner Centennial, at Charleston, S. C. Dr. G. P. Gehring and wife are making a southern tour, visiting Florida,
Cuba and Yucatan.
MAY'S LANDING.
Miss Mary Hudson returned home Saturday evening after a week's visit with her sister, Mrs. Clarence Morse, at East Orange. The caucuses were held on Saturday. Barkentine Jennie Sweeney, Captain S. S. Hudson, sailed Saturday from Philadelphia for Galveston, Texas, coal laden. The Board of Freeholders will meet at the Court House on Wednesday next. The jury for the April term of Court will be drawn next Tuesday. Captain Lee, of the schooner A. L. Green, for whom grave fears had been entertained, arrived in Philadelphia on Sunday, after being out from Jacksonville, Fla., since January 30 with a car-
go of lumber.
Nominations for local offices have been made as follows: Republican--Town Clerk, N. B. Gaskill; Justice of the Peace, Martin V. B. Moore; Town Council, Lucius B. Corson, Daniel E. Iszard and Daniel McClure. Democra-tic--Clerk, Joseph L. Veal; Justice of the Peace, Andrew Smallwood. PORT REPUBLIC. Death continues to call its victims from among our friends and acquaint-
ances. The wife of Burroughs Higbee, formerly Louisa Bowen, was buried last Wednesday. The next day the same family was called to lay to rest the mortal remains of their gentle and kindly neighbor, Mrs. Mary A. Higbee, so long known and honored. Thus drop away the tried and true from among us. Mrs. Lizzie Waggoner is visiting her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Clark. We welcome her and her two bright children once more. We hope her visit will be a lengthy and pleasant one. It is reported that Miss Farley, our talented primary teacher, has changed her mind and will remain till the school year is over. The principal, Mr. Mitchel, has rented the Clark property and expects to fill the months intervening between the close of school and the beginning of the next school year with farming. Wonder if he has any experience with Jersey mosquitoes? If not, alas! A new firm under the regime of John-
son & Rose has entered the butcher
business. We wish everybody success.
Miss Mamie Livingstone, of Atlantic
City, is visiting her acquaintances in Port.
The big sale of everything pertaining to a farm and household goods will take place at E. D. French's next Thursday. Everybody should come and buy them-
selves rich.
The young converts from Brigantine made Port Republic a visit last Friday evening. They attended the revival services now being held here, and attested to what the Lord has done for them, under the ministration of their pastor, Rev. R. A. Cake. Where there is so much religion and morals taught, as in this place, room for a boxing club is hard to fine. This is as it should be.
ATLANTIC CITY.
J. H. Brode, who bought the lot of ground fronting on the Boardwalk, and from Chelsea to Morris avenues of Henry Mosebach, will, in the near future, build one of the finest casinos in
the country, containing all the latest
novelties, electrical and mechanical.
There will be a large carousel, cafe, photograph gallery, electrical balloon, pool and billiard parlor and shuffle boards. One of the features will be a sun parlor, with a seating capacity of 1000 people. A bath-house, containing 150 rooms, will also be built in connection with the other improvements. This is the beginning of the building of large properties near the new Excursion House, and bids fair to be a success.
The Republican city convention Saturday night nominated the following city ticket: Recorder, John Gouldy; Alderman, Robert Ingersoll; Treasurer, John A. Jeffries; Tax Collector, Carlton Godfrey; Overseer of Poor, Robert Dunlevy; Judicious Freeholders, E. P. Short, R. B. Leeds and William Wyand. J. Gouldey, John Jeffries and Carlton Godfrey are the present encumbents in the offices for which they were nominated. Councilmen nominated were: First ward, John A. Clement; Second, H. B. Leeds; Third, Joseph Marvel; Fourth, Thomas Tompkins.
The Democrats also made their nominations as follows: Recorder, Carl Voelker; Alderman, Stewart McShea; Treasurer, G. Jason Waters; Tax Collector, W. B. Loudenslager; Overseer of Poor, Edward Moss; Judicious Freeholders, J. H. Mason, John R. Champion and Dr. Willard Wright. For Council: First ward, Charles Rutter; Second, John B. Champion, who has declined to accept; Third, Somers Doughty; Fourth, Dr. E. L. Southern. G. Jason Waters has reclined the Democratic nomination for City Treasurer.
The pupils of the Pennsylvania High School will give an entertainment on the 16th inst., the proceeds to be applied to replenishing the library. The Waverly opened on Friday. A public meeting, to be held in Odd Fellows' Hall next Saturday evening, has been called for the purpose of voting upon the question of providing more school room. At a meeting Thursday night of the lodge B. P. O. Elks, Clarence Myers, one of its members, was awarded the contract for building a $16,000 new hall at Maryland and Atlantic avenues.
The Right Reverend John Scarborough, Bishop of the Episcopal Church, is sojourning here for the benefit of his health. Bishop Perry, if Iowa, is another notable visitor. The city Christian Endeavor Societies, and several clergymen, are agitating the formation of a good citizens' League to take part in local elections. Councilman Lee introduced an ordinance in City Council Monday night providing for the widening of the boardwalk, between Illinois and Maryland avenues, to 48 feet, twice its present width. The cost is roughly estimated at $100,000, the ordinance providing that seven years' city improvement bonds be issued to cover the expense.
A Novel Scheme.
Harry Headley has adopted a novel method for unloading lime from cars
on the track. The loaded car was placed opposite Mr. Headley's warehouse on West avenue, and two heavy telegraph wires run from it to the storage house,
each wire having an incline sufficient to carry the loaded and empty baskets to and from the car. The baskets were swung upon sticks 2x10 inches into which were inserted two grooved pulleys. Mr. Headley claims in this way to be able to unload a car in about two
a half hours.
Cases Before Justice Reed.
Supreme Court Justice Reed, sitting
in chambers in Camden, Saturday reserved his decision in the suit of the trustees of James Stokes' estate against Atlantic City to recover fees for collect-
ing delinquent taxes. In the suit of
Willits vs. Charles K. Lippincott permission was given to have the case tried before a jury at May's Landing. Lawyer Crandall presented argument in opposition to a petition for the incorporation of Wildwood Reach as a borough but the matter was postponed for a week.
Received Wanted for a Steamboat Company.
Mayor Ludlam, of Sea Isle City, has applied to Chancellor McGill for the appointment of a Receiver for the
Ocean City, Longport and Somers'
Point Steamboat Company. The com-
pany has had a short existence, having only been incorporated about a year ago.
It carried passengers between the above points on Great Egg Harbor Bay. Close competition by an older concern caused the failure. Mayor Ludlam, whose claim amounts to about $500, is but one of a number of creditors.
Notice of Caucus.
A meeting of the Republican voters in Ocean City will be held on the second floor of the K. of P. Hall on Thursday
evening, March 7th, at 8 o'clock, for the
purpose of nominating candidates for the various borough offices to be elected March 12, 1895. JAMES W. LEE, Chairman Ex. Committee. SAMUEL SCHURCH, Sec'y.
Citizen's Caucus.
The legal voters of the Borough of Ocean City, without regard to party lines, will meet on the third floor of K. of P. Hall on Thursday evening, March 7, 1895, at 8 o'clock, for the purpose of nominating candidates for the vari-
ous borough offices to be voted for on
the 12th inst.
