ATHLETIC PARK FAVORED BY MAYOR CHAMPION

City's Executive Telia Hotel People of Plana at Mrs. Rouey's Dinner. Mr*. JohiibOD Honey, of theritrand Hotel, following her unual cUHtom of »oiue year*, entertained at dinner the in em hern of the Hotel Proprietor#' a#- ! aoclatluit, Mayor Champion, and other Invited guest# at the hotel Monday night. Following the dinner, which wa» appreciated by all, l'renident George Mann, acting u# loaHtma*ter, called on | Mayor Champion for an addre#*. j Mayor Champlou a#ked for the cooperation of the hotel owner# and manager# In plan# t lie city purpoaea to inaugurate, uiid those In the gathering ann ured him that they will help in every way. Mayor Champion #poke of the plan now in operation of charging adum#lon to the concert# In the city'# music pavilion thin i# belug done with the object of placing the concert# on a #elf supporting ba#l#, Instead of the city paying the inuHlclan#, a# ha# been done here for year#. There hai been started, the speaker said, a propaganda to discourage attendance at these concert#. and the mayor expressed the hope that the hotel annnclatlnii mem¬ ber# will do all they can to discourage tin* propaganda. More things are given free In Ocean City than in any resort anywhere, Mayor Champion #taltd, and he »howed where It ha# beeu costing the city f 130, 000 a year for free music, frte city booklet, and free collection of the rubbish and garbage. It Is -the purpose of himself and the other City (.'commissioner# to place these thing# on a self-supporting basis In order that the money thus expended may be devoted tn the subsidizing of other needed Improvements. One of the thing# needed by the city, In the oplulnlou of the mayor, Is an athletic or amusement park. thla would have to be promoted aud carried along by the municipality until it became self supporting. However, the city must liret be relieved of sustaining these other affair#. It Is important aud uecei#ary that the hotel proprietors assist lu advertising the city and belug prompt aud courteouH lu their correspondence with Inquiries for accommodations. He urged them tint to treat their correspondence discourteously when they (the hotel people) are ru#hed with business and thus make the would-be guest feel a# though the hotel people do not waul any more busluenn. 8. b. Swan praised the hotel association aud Its membership. He ex pressed his amazement and pleasure at the good feeling that exists among the memliers, all of whom are competitors lu business. The hotel people are an aeaet'to thla community and every community, for with the erection of a hotel comes a following of cottagers. mr. Swan #poke of the need of more of the up tn-lhe-mluule hotel# In thla city. He meant no reflection on any of ihe hotel# now here, but a new liotel of the kind he referred to will help all the other hotel#. Like Mayor Champion, he believes Ocean City Is on the verge of remarkably great times. Capt. Packer, sou of Mrs e. e. Packer, of \Ve#t Philadelphia, who (UonituovO on Fourth !'*««.)
