PROTEST DANCES IN MUSIC PAVILION Bnt These Functions Had1 Been Stopped Before Holding of Mass Meeting. Not knowing that the Commissioners of Public Recreatlou Grounds, w ho have charge of the music iu the city's pavilion ou the Hoardwalk, had decldejiJtti&day before to discontinue the /lances lu this building, because thesekUiilrti-lvereuot paying, the Hev. Jamen K. Lake, the only survivor of the brother* who founded this resort, brought up the matter of these Illegal practices at a mass meeting In the auditorium ou Huuday evening. Mr. Lake, at the close of the services In the auditorium, said that he desired to bring before the assemblage the question of the dances being held lu the music pavilion. He said that lu every deed In Ocean City It Is expressly stipulated that there shall be no dauce hall or bawdy bouse lu the city. When such might be found, tbe Court lias decided that such place shall be declared a nuisance. There might as well be a bawdy house here us to have the municipal building couverted Into a dance hall. He denounced "this outrage that has beeu l>erpetrated on thlscommuulty." There are thousands of cleau youug people to be found uu tbe city's Hoardwalk lu the eveulugs, yet those who have charge of the music pavilion have perpetrated this devlllvhuess. The speaker closed with a vigorous protest. Mr. Cameron, who is Identified with Holy Trinity Episcopal Church here, was Introduced aud read the following resolutions: W if KKKA8, the ruusic committee of Ocean City has allowed dauclug upon the Municipal Pier, to which they have charged an admission fee, which by the Court's decision clearly placet 1 the city In contempt of Court by main- ! talulug a "dauce bouse;" therefore be i II Kbsolvkd, First, tbat we, the cltlzeus or Ocean City In mass meeting assembled, respectfully ask that this said music committee will cease this i illegal practice; and Bkcox'b, thai we humbly ask our : Mayor and City Commissioners thai i they protect the good uauie of Ocean i City from anything aud everything - that would lower tbe high standtug of ' our Chrlstlau city by which we have - attained unto the high and prosperous condition which has become the admiration of the whole country; and i be It further Resolved, that a copy of these reso- . tutlons be sent to the music commitI tee aud also to tbe Mayor and Commissioners of tbe city. > A motion was made that the resolutions be adopted by a rising vote, • which was done. WON'T LIMIT MEMBERSHIP OF OCEAN CITY FISHING CLUB
I WHY NOT PAY TO HEAR THE MUSIC? Taxpayer Recalls the Days of Ilarrisoti'8 Band and a Free Blow. One of Occau City 'a residents, a woman who pay* taxes here, has seul the Ben'Tzxkl the* foliowlug regardiug the couccrtH by \ es*clia n Orchestra in tbe city's music pavilion: Kihtuk the Bjcxumkl:— I see by the Hextixkl that there appears lo be some feeling regarding the orchestra now playlug In the music pavlllou aud that the people seeui to resent tlis action of the commissioners In authority lo charging an admission fee. Burely, every seaside resort has to charge admission to concerts. As all Interested will recall, there was much harsh criticism, a few years ago, when tbe music was free to the public, because we did not have a baud or orchestra such as played io Atlantic City, Asbury Park aud other similar resort*. Now tbat wo have the famous Vessella Orchestra aud band, people waut lo bear ibis music wiiboul paylug for ll. They bad to pay to hear Vessella'a Hand when It was In Atlantic City. Why uot pay lu Ocean City? We can remember tbat when we had free music In the city's pavlllou, that building was nothing but a children's play-ball, aud tbe noise aud racket the youngsters made was disgusting. A lot of people, too, would monopolize tbe chairs, turning these In every dlrectlou aud placing tbetr hate aud coats on them to reserve the seats for friends who lo many instances never appeared. If one asked for a seat, she was met with an Icy glare. Tbe foud mother of uolsy children resented tbe authority's representative If crying children were rebuked. Dou't you remember, too, tbe baby coaches Inside and outside tbe building? Burely you recall the noise of every description perpetrated by young meu (?) and presumably youug ladles? Tbe only way In which all this nursery confusion was avoided was wbeu the Ocean City Orchestra Auxiliary made a charge 6f $6 for a season ticket for one persou. Most of us cab recall that, with this charge, there were many vacant chairs lu the pavlllou on mauy days. Woman Music Lovkk Buy* Apartmeut HoaaeMrs. Elizabeth Hlundln, of the Hiscayns, has purchased, through J. M. Chester, tbe two-family apartment house at 902 Beoond street. Mrs Hlundln has sold her house at 843 Peuulyn place to Mr. Chester. STORE ROBBED lull Hidden by Manager Wa* Taken During Nlictn. Theodore of the Atlautlc aud Pacific Company In this city was entered and robbed of $188 on Wednesday night. The store has been managed for two or three weeks by Mrs. Charlotte Taylor, of Atlantic City, and when she closed for tbe night on Wednesday she bid the money on hand In a certain part of the store. When she opened tbe store Thursday morning, the money was goue. The thler entered by using a bit oo the baok door and removing the lock. He rausacked the place thoroughly before finding tbe 1188. Chief Bcoll said uu Thursday that he had a strong clue. For Halm.— Used household goods at 1152 Asbury ave. adv., it.
Neither Will Initiation Fee be Raised— Two Nominees for President. President Waller W. HI boon declining lo serve another term a* prestdaut of the Ocean City Fishing Club, tba members at their well attended meeting Friday uigbt nominated Vice President Henry W. Btel wagon and Peter F. Wright for this oflloe. Both are active members of the dub, each with a number of frlauda. George F. Bauer, oue of the aolld, substantial men of the organ! xatlon, and always a booster, was nominated for tbe oflloe of vice president. Dr. W. L. Magee was onable to serve longer as secretary, and George ("Chick") Burkhardt, a popular member or tbe clob, was nominated. The "old reliable," Robert B. VolI urn, was nominated for treaeurer. Five of tbe trustee# whose terms are expiring were renominated. Thay are: Churchill Hungerford, Harry H. Marter, P. F. Wright, Clarence Brush aud Dr. E. C. Weston. The proposed amendments to the constitution and by-laws, to limit the membership to 400 and to raise the Initiation fee from $15 to $25, drew warm debates, aud both propositions were defeated. A proposition to pay tbe secretary $100 a year was also defeated, many of the members, looludlng the present secretary, declaring that It waa an honor to be secretary of the club and therefore there should he no emoluments. Twenty new members were elected to tbe clab, making a total of 96 for tbe season, and running the roll of membership to considerably more than 400. After the meeting there waa a call for Frank H. Btewart, a former praaldeut of the club, to tell of his tarpon fishing experiences In Tarpon Springs, Fla., last winter, and ha gave one of his customary interesting talks. Mr. Btewart caught 21 tarpon last winter. He also was presented with a gold button by the club at Tarpon 8prlnga for catching tbe second largest tarpon on an 18 -thread Hoe. While Mr. Btewart always has a seat of honor in one of tbe big cbalrv at the clnb bouse, no one queetiona his veracity aa a fisherman.
