1 TRADE BOARD MEMBERS | WILL WORK FOR CONCERTS

Mayor Champion Gives Brlet History of Music Conditions in This City, The Hoard of Trade lueinbere have B decided to make u well-directed and purposeful eltcrt to |>upularl2^ the dally coucert* by Veabella'a Orchtetra in ttie rnueic pavlliou. The decintou w.h reached at the uieethiK of the hoard on Monday even* Iuk aftej Mayor Chauiploii had recited the story of conditions and made It clear that It la a matter that moat surely touches every property owuer here, who, If there ahould he a deficit lu the amount required to pay t tie iuu* slclaua thla »ummtr— 11 0,600— will have to pay lu laxea tu make up the ueceaaary amount. After hearing Mayor Champion'a re* cllal, several of the memhera of the board agreed to take partlea of frleuda to the concerts in the eveuiiiga. It. R. 8 ooy said that he will take ten people, aud William H. Ma»»ey stated that he will have fitly of his frleuda there probably thla (Thursday) evening. Dr. T. D. .Sensor, director of the Stale's summer schools, with hla sum]J mer headquartera In Oceau City, said that fifty meuihera of the local summer school will go to the music pavilion thla (Thursday) evening and give a community alng between the orchea. tral selections. They will all pay their own way, he said, when a suggestion wtt8 made that the aummer school people slum Id go lu free. . .Mayor Champluii said he desired to speak to the board members oti the question of thecoucerta In the pavilion, which are being given on plana approved, some lime alnce, by the Hoard of Trade, as the records will ahow. When be had finished hla alury, It 11 was unanimously decided, on mo llou of Russell 11. Nulty, to uphold the City Commissioners on the music question. Mayor Champion eald he was not asking the meetlug to get him out of a hole. He does uot consider that personally he is lu a hole. He does not H feel that it Is any more of his business H than that of any other taxpayer lu the city. He u as uot coming before the meeting with any plea. The trouble over the concerts Is due to a complete lulsutideraiandiug. The people are depriving themselves eventually of music because the city cauuot spend money for music If the people do not support it. The city has no more money for music than It had in 1916, but music I co»la four tlmea as much. The music in Hie pavilion must be made partly -elfsupportlng. When he came Into cilice, the city I was employing a baud for $4000 a season. There was a demand for higher I clasi music, but the city could do no better. The Boardwalk business men took up the questlou of the concerts aud made themselves responsible for the difference between the amount of the city's appropriation aud sum reI quired to pay an orchestra of meoibeni I of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The | eecoud year they did not come back. ""(They Introduced higher class music. I There was a demand fur It. The Ladles' Auxiliary was formed and the members proposed that, If the I city erected a building In which they could give entertainments, tbey would raise the money. Then the city voted ho spend $20,000 for the enlargement (Continued on second page.) . I I

Committees of Board of Trade Will Report Next Monday Evening. The Board of Trade, at a special meeting Monday eveulug, took tbe Initiative lu the move to provide a firstclass ocean front hotel for this retort, aud the following committee* were appointed to push the project: Fiueuce— Wm. E. Massey, Frank H. Hie wart and Charles 8. Pattoo. location of hotel— Dr. Allen Corsod, Commodore William E. iiexamer aud Prof. Jaines M. riteveus. Character of building— Joseph M. Rowland, Mayor Joseph Q. Champion aud Harry ileadley. These committees will report at a meetlug of the Board of Trade next Monday evenlug, and to tbls meeting the public Is earnestly Invited. An indicated by tbe title of tbe committees, everything has beeu left to members of these committees, and action will probably be taken on their reports at Muuday evening's meeting. As expressed by William K. Masaey at the meetlug last Monday evenlug, there Is no concealed plan to help any individual lu auy way— "tbe cards are all on the table." Tbe suggestion that tbe committee* for tbe purposes named be selected was made by R. W. Edward* early In the meeting. Lawyer Carr, of Camden, legal representative or Jo*. M. Rowland, said that as be understood tbe call for tbe meeting, It wi« planned to do aomething dellulte at tbts time. He wauled to kuow whether tbey could uot do more than appoint committee*. His thought was to gel subscription* for tbe proposed hotel. William £. Masaey declared thai whatever may be oald 1* not a reflection ou auy of the present hotel* in Oceau City, but the city hasn't a modern, llret-claas hotel. We want something a point or two removed from what we have. The hotel keeper* appreciate the need of *uch a building. He does not kuow of any plan* for a liotel except tbose secured by Joseph M. Rowland at hla owu expense a few weeks ago. The cards are all on tbe (able. There Is no tie-up to any feature of the proposed hotel. It must be a strictly business proposition and to have it so it must be kept within bound*. We don't want to start on a million aud a half dollar hotel. The speaker said that he knows of no pro- : position with any property owner. There have been some bond hooae : men in Ocean City recently who are willing to take up the hotel project If the Board of Trade and the cttixena are back of the move. To raiae the money required means hard work. He would like to see tbe aubsortpilona taken by large numbers. If the hotel . does not come now, with the preeent . spirit and feeling, It s* difficult to aay , when It will come. The hotel building should be of ateel and concrete construction, and there . must be $250,000 ralaed before tbe Board of Trade has Its booster banquet early lu September. R. W. Edwards wanted to know tf a lire-proof building were really eai seuiial at this time. It would be very * expensive for a summer hotel. , Mr. Masaey explained that the rate of fire insurance for hotels In Atlantic . City la from 4 j to 7J per cent. If the hotel here would coat $300,000, one could see what the coat of insurance will be. There la the difference between the ratee mentioned and per ceut. Tbey would be paying Internet on ouly $150,000 more, without a . thought of tbe safety of the guests.
