SOHDAY K THE LOCAL CHURCHES Strong Sermons and Excellent Masic Heard by Congregations. 8T. AUGlttTlNK'S. Ths thwe uia**e« In St. Auguiittoc'tt Church Sunday were all fairly well attended. The celebrant* were the rector, the ftev. Thome* K. RUke, end the Rev. J. J. CnlUUau, of Lornwell Heights. On next Sunday aud the succeed* lug Suudaye until vpilng there will be only one mm, this at 10 o'clock. There will be services at 7.46 o'clock tomorrow evening, the last tloie for thla season. viKsrst. K. lu the absence of the pastor, the Rev. George W. Yard, the morulug and evening sermons were preached by the ttev. Dr. George L. Dobbiu*. A spirited song service, lbs congregation using the church hymnal, pre ceded the evening sermon. The subject of the morning discourse was, "Jesuit Christ, the Great High Priest of the Christian Dispensation," and the text Heb. 4; 14: "geetag then that we have a great High Priest that Is passed Into the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let ua huld fast S^oor profession,' ' The speaker, after dwelling briefly and generally upon the duties of the high priest under the Mosaic dl»pen aatlon, made special mention of two of thoae duties, uamely, that of sacrifice and that of Intercessory prayer for all the people. The high priest superintended the sacrifice* in the tabernacle of the con gregation and In the temple after It was built, seeing to it that they were oflered at the times and lu the man ner prescribed In the Jaw. Tbey muet be offered with orderly solemnity. Nothing unclean or Impure must ap p roach tba altar of sacrifice. On the annual great day of atonement, the high priest was to sanctify —that Is, purify— the people and himself, after which be must enter the Holy of Holiee and there pray for the remission of sin unto the people, that t the glory of God might crown the < mercy seat. I Dr. Dobbins then recurred to bla 1 text and noted, first, that the writer 1 of the hook of Hebrews, being a Jew, 1 waa perfectly familiar with the He- < brew wonhlp and throughout the x book seeks to show Jewish coo veru to Christianity how the old forms are ] typical of and are fulfilled fn the Chriatlan worship. Jesus Christ ha*

offered Himself once for ail, a living oacflfice for the remission of ain unto all the people, all races, kindred and tongues. *Tbe chastisement of onr peace was upon Htm and with His stripee we are healed." "In Hie own body. He bare ouralns on the tree." But He i* also passed into the heavens, aa the text declares, where He Is the ascended Christ, ever living to make intercession for ut at the right hand of God. a High Priest who Is toothed with a feeling of our infirm)tie* Dr. Dobbins declared, In passing, that there is baxdJy a belter attested historical fact than the ascension of Jeans Christ, and he said that, so far aa he himself waa concerned, his own faith had passed into a certainty like that of Stephen when be eaw his Lord at the right band of the Father. The speaker, before closing, emphasised our Lord's great intercessory prayer for Hie disciples, a* recorded io Hi. John's gospel 17. noting particularly the petition, "I pray not that Tbou should est take them oat of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from lb# evil." The belief was affirmed that this petition Is now and has ever been the living Christ's prayer for His disciples, tar He neede them In the world to be Hie wltnesvee, to be His workers for His kingdom, through whom He may manifest Himself and -bow forth HI* glory He must be continuously incarnate in men We are lo be sanctified through His troth, through Htm who Himself is the truth. Therefore, let u* hold feat our profession, and our profession must he our Uvea. It was a geoulu* gonpel wrmou. HAD JOLLY TIME l*ri!ii»>hHulH HaltroufS Clerks ICoJiMcd Outlug Mere, Hlx clerks from thu Pennsylvania Railroad's Fourth street oHIce In Philadelphia spent the week end at Hie Y. M. C. A. Seashore House. First street and Bay avenue, and had the lime of their lives geltiug their own meals. Miss Morgau was chief cook, assisted by Miss Zimmerman, Miss Hlgglns, Miss Lyons aud Misses Mulr and Kkey, the latter olmiuptou cake- makers. Through the kind uess of George C. Harriett, secretary, they had three trips lu the aioop, Peunsy, sailing out lu the ocean. What is remarkable, uoueoftbem got seasick, aud It was rough, too, at times, hut the spray, dashlug over them while they calmly *at iu the bow, didu't fease them. The town may be quiet at this lime of the bcason, but the girls kept that part of the resort very much awake. The members of the party were: \liss Fmlly J. Morgau. HIeuhelm; Miss Dorottiy Ekey, Wenonah; Miss Helen Muir. Liudeiiwuld; Misses Kulli E Hlicgiiis, Alice Zimmerman and Hazel K. Lyoue, West Philadelphia Time Fiddling. There la a lot of time fiddled away to this world, one way and another, by good people who have the best of Intentions. We will venture to assert, along thla line, that more time Is fiddled away by folka who peck at languages than in any other munaer. Almost everybody la seized at some stage In his life with a desire to add another tongue to bis own. but it usually results in nothing more than time wasted. Repentant Patty. Minnie and her Uttle dog. Patvy. were playing In the kitchen. Minnie's mamma waa cooking supper and stumbled over Patsy, causing her to drop an egg on the freshly scrubbed floor. She put Patsy out on the porch and seated Minnie In a corner. In a few moments Patsy scratched on the door and began barking. Minnie said to her mother: "Mamma, can Patsy come In now 7 He's sorry. Don't you hear him *pologlxing7" Try to Be Agreeable. We should wisely cultivate the art of being agreeable, not only In the company of our business associates or those persons whom we meet socially In onr own homes as well. By thus deporting ourselves we shall find more pleasgnt and people In general — the home folks In particular — considerate. On the other hand. If wo continue to think only of oarselves we shall find life a trying affair. — Exchange. r<

Rugby FootbalL At the famous school of Rugby, England, originated that form of football, now bearing the name of the school. , An Inscription, at Rugby reads: "This stone commemorates the exploit of William Webb Ellis, who, with a fine disregard for the rules of football, as played In his time, first took the ball In bis arms and ran with It, thus originating the distinctive feature of the rugby game.
