PEOPLE SHOULD UNITE FOR CITY , I The Rev. M. M. Uwla Tells J of Alarming Religious ( Conditions Here. To the Ministers of tlio Association: I You have uskvd mo to muke a brief - survey of conditions in ticuth City ■ ( -'uid present the findings in n paper ' .to he read at the initial meeting ut ; tit « Ocean City Ministerial Associa- 1 tion. 1 While this is the flr.d tlmo In the history of Ocean City that there ever was enough spirit of unity among the ministers to make tin Association or , i his kind possible, nevertheless the , facta as revealed in this survey would make us blush with shame thai so ; important a thing as a united front i on I he part of the churches has been delayed so long. Let It be said that the coal shunjtlon of the winter of ^918. which foreed the union of three churches was a blessing In disguise, for only then did ? wo realize the Joy in harmony and/a , slight foretaste of what could be dom^ in this community if the ministers and churches became welded together ir a common purpose and forget their potty denominational Jealousies, which have been In past years the subject of many a Joke, the alibi of many a sinner and the reason for the lack of real efllcioncy. YVo have long been advertised as a ( hrialian Seaside Resort, but we must be very' careful lest this becomes true in the abstract only. The New Era in which we And ourselves Is challenging the Christian forces to assert themselves most positively if Ihey are to meet the Issues and he of value in the world. It 1h the least wo can do in Ocean City to present a united and solid front, study the situation, and address ourselves most vigorously to its solutions. Here are some fncts that will be both interesting and a challenge to your host endeavors. 1 have sought the Information from olhclal sources in the various phases and will present I he following merely as a superilrlal survey of present conditions, bellov ing that a very careful survey would reveal even more startling facts. Wo have right now o population of about 3.500 people. Of this number, about 200 are colored and 300 foreign ers. The tola) membership of all our churches, Methodist, Presbyterians. Baplists. Episcopal and Catholic num- " her exactly 907 people out of a Held of 3.000 possibilities, or. in other words, only slightly more than 30 per cent, of the available population. The first problem is. what shall be done to reach the other 70 per cent. Again, there are In the city about 800 children, of which €85 are of public school age. Despite this fact, the ' total membership of all our Sunday Schools. Protestant and Catholic, Is only 555- of which number 30 per cent are' adults. This leaves 400 children within these city limits somewhere who are not receiving any religious training or education anywhere. ' Shall this condition be winked at and allowed to continue? Now let us look at some financial ' frets which will tell an Interesting ■ Story. This city. I am told, has a property value of Ten Million l>ollars 1 Of this amount the total church valuation Is but $135,000. or slightly bet [ ter tlian one per cent, of the total valuation. There is on deposit Ip both ' our banks nt present the sum &ML 745. €50.00. of which, bank men lell me' 40 per cent, should be clipped ofl me. •»" per will. nnwMi-i ... . .

In nummary let me suggest thai there are real probloms meeting us In the following facts and situations, which we as ministers want to address ourselves in a vigorous manner. lHt.—Tho alarmingly few Ocean City people who are members of our churches. 2nd.— The more alarmingly few children who aro receiving religious education. 3rd. — The latent possibilities in this city for good, both in action and money power. If properly aroused. 4th.— The great need of a Community Social Consciousness and Social Center. 5th.— The real urgency in quicken- 1 ing the spiritual consciousness of our i church members. They need waking up. Btli.— The problem of coping with out unfortunate political situation. In 'such way as may help remove any bar to our city's progress.
