SDNDO SCHOOL HOLDS BANQOET IntercstiDgExerctfic?' \n Con | ncction V ;th 'Methodist Cliorc' Aato jSooc, YoLluWiag ri >Unr:cr, Friday night I KlviU ( llnUtu ' of gt«h wjuWm* of the uuto race frum .>«oi FYanclsco to New York in the Methodist Sunday School, the teacher and his claaa received public congrat ulatlons at a gathering of the class aud many of the church members, held In the Sunday School room. It waa expected that the Slate Sunday School secretary would be present lo addrena the congregation, but Supt. Mowrrr announced that thla gentle-* man could not be in attendance. Dr, Snyder, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, was then pro tented. Dr. Snyder said that there was no need for words after auch a delightful The grown people frequent have banquets, but all— the young folks as well as the older ones— an provided for to night. He waa glad ul their festivities over their activities, declafST I)r. SnVder aald.that all have heard of cheer leaders in college contests These arc needed In the churches and Sunday 8chool«— not the long-faced, grlm-vlsaged people. He cannot un derst&nd how such folks as the last kind can be conaldered in connection with the work of the Lord. He does not know how the Idea originated The spirit of cheer, friendship and sociability Is needed. One trouble in many churches it that there is too much snobbery. This

Is frequently to be seen among boyt I and girls. If there Is anything he t despises, the speaker said. It is a snob •* —some boy or girl who puts up his oi 1 ber nose at another boy or girl who * may be poorly dressed. He does not ' know whether they. have such snobt I in this Sunday School, but he has Been ' such things In other churches. The opportunltltes that confront tb* « young men and women today arc 1 many, and we haven't planted our feet ' in the fresh tasks of this world. Build ! character, the speaker urged. The boys and girls who put their hearts In their work are the ones who will solve the problems of the nation. He said that he believes that the Sunday School thai continues twelve 1 months in the year baa the right kind of enthusiasm and "pep." The biggest thing Is to see the people standing by the ship throughout the year. Dr. Snyder reiterated his declaraIon that he bated the snob, and caniot tolerate him, and he has no UBe for the wabbler. Concluding, the speaker expressed he hope that the Sunday School will 'iave a wonderful year, and by this he meana the whole year. Don't "lie down" in July and August, was his oarting Injunction. Led by the Rev. George W. Yard, he pastor, the members of the Men's lible Class sang a selection having to 1 do with the race In the Sunday School, which will be resumed after the holldaya. The refrain of the song waa ' "We're going to beat them at 8nn Francisco Bay" This was so well re- ' reived that the class sang another selection along the same lines. A quartet sang "Love's Old Sweet ' Song." and the vocalists did It so well that they were encored, responding with a humorous selection. The quartet comprised Dr. J. Thornley Hughes, r Russell H. Nulty. Clinton D. Lowden ■ and Edward M. Sutton. The Rev. J. W. Watts, rector of t Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, next • presented, said that, with so many • banquets he does not know what Is going to happen. This, too, in this • Advent season and days of fasting In , his church. He told of bursting pipes . . i « _ . . .k.i anri

In late afternoon and how he had been thoroughly soaked with water only a abort time before coming to this afTair. He was drench r-d with water until he was almost a Baptist, lie said he was glad to be present and pleased to aee so much enthusiasm among the Methodist people. After relating two or three funny stories, and for which line Mr. Walts Is now becoming noted here, the Speaker told of the need of the right kind of teachers In the Sunday schools. There Is needed more than a sound mind in a sound body. There Is a soul for which an account most be given. He closed by congratulating Mr. Lowden and the members of the winning olaas. Such affairs as this are need ^ i-d to keep Interest In the churches and to renew interest In each other. After the singing of a hymn by the ^ assemblage, the quartet sang another selection and lhe members were com- ( pelled to give two additional numbers. Even then the applause continued for some mlnutrt, < Mr. Yard said that he wss sure all ( had enjoyed the qttartat'a singing He told of having heen a member of a nollege quartet. There were many present ai all the services in the Methodist Church Sunday. The record attendance at the Sabbath school was again broken, there tw-ing nearly three hundred counted by the secretaries. It Is tho : aitn to reach the three hundred murk r.ext Sunday and overtop it the flrat Sunday oi the new year. The annual coal and interest collection was taken in the church. Twelve hundred dollars was need«-d for these two Items and nearly thirteen hundred dollars was subscribed. The pastor, the Rev. George W. Yard, spoke briefly at the morning service of "The Man. the Woman, and thi? Son of Man." His evening subject was, "The Meaning of Christmas, of 1919." Mr. Yard said the day for dire poverty has temporarily passed from ,oui midst here in America. The orators, statesmen and preachers are not dwelling upon that subject as they' once did. There Is not the real want in our country that there was at one time, or such as now exist*} in many ; of the other countries of the world

Neither is there the lack of necessl- 1 1 1 ties, as Is loo frequently the case in I * some other places. On the other hand. I the people of America are buying such], gifts for their children and their fani-l Hies as they have never bought be- 1 ^ fore. Money Is running almost like water. The greatest gift, however, which could be made Is that of serl- 1 ous thought, moulded and Influenced thp teachings and life of Christ, I whose birthday we celebrate, at thlal season of the year. Mr. Yard said we need to put more I love Into the gift that is made, and I not a mere act of presenting somebody I with something. This is a universal need, and one which the world serl ously lougs for. The choir gave the cantata, "Tld ings of Joy". Everyone enjoyed theli work very much, for they did theli part well. fikfit pkkhbytkkian. The Sunday services lu tbe First Preabyteriau Church were very tni* preaalve.
