Wtlliaiii E. Snyder, engineer of th« United Statea Engineer*' office at Wilmington. Del., ooncludrd the bearing, held in the City Commissioners' Chamber. There were also prew-nt William A. llanpoy. Sujn rvlsor of tho West Jersey and Soa HImh* ilailroad Company; Ma>or Champion and City Commissioner HoU-it I-lsher and City Engineer William If. CVUlaaon Mr. Snj-dir also was Accompanied by an official stenographer, J. A. Dincvn. (f Wilmington. Mr. Snyder. In opening the meeting, told of the purpose and read the notice He stated that Cot Johnson, after fixing the <U;« found it impossible to be here, and had him (the speaker) to represent the Department. Mr Sn>dcr after reading a section of the River and Harbor act bearing on the subject before them, stated that he had some letters that had been submitted to the department and that he would read them. Thaae were from W. F. Allen. Win. McGlnnla, John Boyle. Win. Madison and Mrs. Margaret M. Kulp, all favoring the cJbslng of the creek. Charles D. IUU. secretary of tho South Ocean City Improvement Association, with a membership of JM, said that he was at the meeting with a letter from hta association, in case there was opposition to the project. There docs not see m to be any opposition, he said, hut he read the letter as follows; K. N. Johnson. UeuL Colonel. Corps of Engineers. Ocean City. N. J. Dear Sir: — Your notice of pubire hearing. dated February 110a Is hereby acknowledged. It Is the concensus of opinion of the members of the South Ocean Cit> Improvement Association that, in order to further protect the southern point of Ocean City, the dosing of WoakAsh Creek a* proposed will undoubtedly accomplish that result. Hand from the beach front below Fifty-third street has been gradually washing away, and. from several years of dose observation, we believe the cause Is due primarily to displacement of sand from the Inlet Jkertly south of Fifty-ninth su« , the Inlet Is dosed, as now pr^^^PPlt will have a tendency to gredu v^^re store conditions and eliminate the menace now threatened and eventually result In building up the beach front, thereby protecting properties tmmediati-ly adjacent thereto and renew confidence In the furtjpr development of the city In that section. We. therefore, recommend closing Weakfish Creek by the construction of a pile break-water of such a character as will permanently stop the Inlet as a waterway from the Sua at that point ami preventing Its finding another sou re north of Middle Thoroughfare, thus preventing Inroads by the sea on already developed property In the south end of Ocean City. Kindly give this matter * your mo»t favorable consideration, yrlth a view to promptly acting upon the application prrssnted tfy the city ngineer. City Engineer Colli -son was requested by Mr. 8ny<Jgr to explain In detail tlx construction of the 'proposed break waUr and tiro reasons theiefor, which be 'did. It is planned to have a saw tooth breakwater construction on the 8outheastrly aide of the county bridge over Wrwkflsh Creck.j which will extend from the abutments on the end of the bridge The breakwater will consist of a doubl* row of pine or oak pile, set virtually nine Inches apart. The tops of the piling will he four feet higher than the general meadow surface. A similar breakwater has been built at Oreat Egg Harbor Inlet and along the beach In South Ocean City. The ultimate Intention Is to use this prnpoatd piling as a part of a bulkhead to be constructed by the County to contain the sand fill for across road eliminating the break at that section. The project has the endorsement of the State Hoard of Commerce and Navigation. the State Inland Waterway. Cape May County officials and the officials of Oc«-an City. It Is expected. It Is said that the West Jersey and Sea shore Ilntlrvad Company will seal at In defraying the cost of the Improvement. In his statement to Mr. Snyder. Engineer CollUieon said that the creek has been constantly changing since the flr»t survey was made by him. Decenfber *•. lest. The <duc«wn>s on the sides have Ixen growing leaa since that time. On low tide there Is a solid sand bar from bank to bank. The stream Is dry half of tha Ume. This has all been done b> nature, with a breakwater there can be had enough sand to fill all up above I he natural elevation of the meadows, and the water would ha deviated to the inland waterway. TI* speaker also told of the damage that has been done by north•ast storms during the last two or thrtO years, and this has caused the property owners Interested to ask for protect ion Mr Sherman said that the Inland Waterway Commission wants to maintain the watei way at the least possible expense. If they could gel this creek closed, the maintenance charge might 1-e given for this Improvement. He heartily endorsed the closing of the creek. Mayor Champion *«td that. In the absence of property owners from that secU0> of South Ocean City at the matting, they are favorable to the proposition They have realised, since the last public hearing In this mater, that they niado a mistake at that time, because of thr damage done by tbft storms In rscent years. Tho properly owners feel thst the creek open is the greatest menace to the protection of the Smith end of Oo-aa C!||r. The County freeholder* are ,n favor of the proposed hreek water. Mr. 8n> der said: "If tharv are no ohJeetton*. we will consider the maetini closed." and tho hearing was ended. LODGE AT CHURCH Washington C amp Hears Sermon by Mr. Yard .
