WILLING TO HELP I GAS COMPANY | tOottllouad Intra Kurt I'ags,) agree lu whuleter Is fixed at this time Mr. ltltchlr answered that the com irany Is asking to du certain work If ii can raise tbe required aiuuunl of inon i «•>. This will In* stated In tin- petition . together with I he rail 1 I '> Coin ' liiiNSioticrs could tlx a rate aud Iht'ii [ i'.c Mule I* i ilit > Hoard can decide i j This would allow the state board tc . know the city's attitude. Director fisher expressed the view ' I that the City Commissioner* should 1 uot Ax the rate. The function of this l*uard Ik to take em of the popple with a* Utile n , Dense to t hem as poaaible. It did not look right to hiio. he diilwied. for thH ImmI> to join with tbe g** company in making a rate for gas Mr itllchic said that it appcura thut i some IntlHfl In the rate will be absolutely essential. That seamed to to understood by the various civic organ ufttioiib of ocean City. Mr. Mayer said that if the roiu|»ai)> can be given an increase of 18 cents a thousand feet, the company can gel the money required for necessary Improvements. With the Increase in rate, the company will b« In a position tu show that it can pay" Interest on its liorrowed money. It Is Impoitant that rate hear ings be not gone into at this time, be cause that would meati that uo ilii proveinenta will I* made by the com irany this year. The company makes monthly reports to the State Utility Commission, and this commission ha* the power to lower the rate If condi lions warrant sucb action. In answer to a query by Ma>t»r Champion, Mr. Mayer said that the company did not take the "on and off' charge under consideration. The conference was here adjourned until 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Mean tHic City Solicitor Boswell ami the gas company officials got together and discussed the situation with a vitW to reaching a conclusion. The company's figures for several years were gone over, as were the estimated receipts and expeuses for tbe coming year, but the more the three men talked the farther away they ap peered to be getting. The company t» officials claimed that Mr.. Boswell'* figures were theoretical, while tin coin pany faced a condition— not a theory— and they knew the actual state of its financial affairs. When the City Commissioners met at 2 o'clock. Solicitor Boswell said tbat (he city's proposition was that the City Gas Light Company be allowed a temporary increase of 18 cents a tbous and feel. If, however, the rate should Anally be declared less than $2.08 — tbe new price— the company would refund the difference Axed by the State board at the later date, tbe proposed new rate to be effective May 1. Director Fisher ex prensed t be t bought that he did not* think the company stood In danger of refunding. The city's proposition did not meet the requirements of Mr. Mayer, who said that if tiie company has to go Into a rate hearing it will "stand pat", and the rate will not be $2.08. If the peo pie here want the improvements 40 the! gas service and are willing to help the company will assist. If the city goes before the State Utility Commis j slon to force the gas company Into ac j tion. the gas company will show- tbat | it can't gel the money for the Improve menta. As a matter of fact, the com pany would prefer postponing work on the proposed improvements for anoth er year. This would save the company thouaanda of dollars. The company cannot help Ocean City unless the peo pie here help the company. After further diacuaaion. Director Fiaher aald that he thought. In view of tbe fact that the company la plan nlng to spend $65,000 for Improvements. and as the city is dependent on the summer visitors, it would be wise to agree to a temporary Increase in the gas rate, in order to permit the company to raise money with which to pay Its bills. With the declining cost I or supplies for making gas. the city could ask for a reduction In tbe rate. The resolution, petition and answer) were then prepared and an agreement I reached. Tba patitlon of tba gas company follows: To the Honorable Board of Public | Utility Commissioners of the State of New Jersey, Trenton. Gentlemen: — Your petitioner, the
