Marching Knights Templar Present Fine Appearance
Dr. Snyder, in Sermon. Scathingly Denounce* Foreign Influences in America. A beautiful ami .umpiring «ight ',wbb presented on the *treet* of ' Occafi City Sumiuy moinlug, when nearly 1L0 meml»ern of Atlantic ' Commander} . No. 20, Knight* Tempiler, in their hamliH>me uniforms, reminding one of picture* of the Crusaders of ol«i, attended A*cenj sioti Day ser vices in tlie First Presbyterian Church. John T. Fieas, commantler; Rob-in-it W. Iluii let, gi-nci Blloaimo, and Rolicit L. Wark, captain general. Entering the handsome edifice, they found seats reserved for them, ami also a large congregation assembled. High over the orgun were symbols of the order, the crown and the sword, in electric light*, the crown being in white lights, ami the .sword being made up of red incandescent lights. "Crossif the Bar" was effectively sung by the commander. v tjuartcl, comprising Wm. H. Collisson, Jr., Itusscll H. Nulty, C. Homer Shoemaker und Edwurd M. Sutton, of , this city. A «luet, "Believe in Me," by Mi*s ; 1/ouisa T. Corson, sopruno, and Mr>. I ltiu T. Bolte, contralto, was welt sung, and Di. Snyder l*gan his ser- , mon, the subject of which was "The Defenders of the Cross." Dr. Snyder's discourse was in the nature of a challenge to the members of the fraternity to (« on guard and to defend the institutions of America from an\ and every foreign dictation. He wr» very plain in his condemnation of the efforts of the Pope at Rome to dictate the policies of a great number of people in this country. He condemned in ( scatchiug terms the reported edict of the Pope against ull organisations that were not distinctly Catholic, such as the Y. M. C. A., the Y. W. C. A. and other young people's societies. This action of the Pope is ( Anti-American and should not be tolerated by any right-thinking American, he declared. The speaker said that he had come to the point when he believed it necessary to preach a new cru*a<ie however unpopular that subject may lie, and that crusade would have as its main object the rescue of America from the hands of foreign dominance. The Knights Templar stand for truth as over against error ami superstitution ; liberty as over against oppression and bondage; purity as over against all the teachings of immorality and license; the cross of the suffering Christ a* sufficient for all mankind, and they to keep the way of the cross open to all pilgrims. One other principle could be added — the separation of Church and State — beliebing that this is the only way to promote the best interests of the kingdom of God. • ; i "Let me say to you," said Dr. , Snyder, "that I believe that these four things have been endangered, during the past four years as never before, with the reaching out of the power of the Roman Catholic Church
j in this land, "I want it clearly understood that I am not opponent to any Catholic. There are many of nf friends who .•re members of this church. I malice the wonderful amount of good this rhutrh lias done and is doing in the world. 1 know what power she has exerted upon the masses. But it is the power that is centered in Home that would presume to dictate the ptdiries of the people of this country and to interfere with the hall of justice and the framing of laws tlu*t are distinctly American j w ith their progrum of (he church ' that I contend with. "Jf there is to l«e a Catholic Church, let us have one that is American. !*t us rut loose from' that old und superstition* folly that j he who sib at Ilome is tie successoi j of Peter and infallible, and all the ' other noit*ense and hyprocrirv. God'» rcpic*entative» are all His sdldren." Dr. Snyder comlemned as unfair to the liberty of American institutions that there should be any united effort to -de feat the Smith-Towner bill. I The very fiurt that this bill is being »o strenuously opposes by the Catholics proves, he said, that the> | have entered their religion into the political life of the nation, ami this ' Ls one of the most un-American act * that can be conceived. "Masons must oppose it," said the! speaker, "and keep the path to Lite real government of American people optu. Rescue America from the bands of these foreign dictators. Be they Pope or Emoeror or King they govern Europe after kll these years can ways ami maimers, and am not interested in the country save aa it may bring returns to them in their fortified positions. They liave clearof trial. Shall we permit (than to experiment with our government ami to interfere with the policies that have long been in practice. Continuing the speaker said: "The present effort to bring a disagreement between England and America should lie frowned upon by all Americans. It is a pernicious propaganda. Where does it come from? Look at the names of those who am fostering this spirit. Look at the *peaker> on the pograms, ami the answer is dearly seen. Shall we stand for this. Sir Knights? By no means — lest our own ami others of our kin be led into a war before whose awfntn— ■ even the great World War will be forgot ter.. "All these efforts of a religious organization to interfere with the political life of a nation — and i would say the same thing of any Protestant organization, should she interfere — should call forth the united strength of Masonry everywhere and a public warning that we shall contest in every" possible way the power that would rob us of our really true American institutions. "America has no room for plotter* and schemers and disturbers, and they shall not pass beyond our standards." The commandery gave the local members a vote of thanks for their entertainment, and they also gave Dr. Snyder a vote of thanks for his sermon.
