A WISE MOVE The member* of the Cupe M.i County Chamber of Commerce took a wi.se step at their meeting in Avaiou Thursday evening in ing a eommittee to make a *tu«ly of the recommendation* of imth the Grand Jury ami the committee that recently iuve.*titfuU*d the county hu>ineas transaction* hy the Umrd of freeholder-.. The matter of the charge*- again** various memliers of the boar<i of freeholder* is before the court ami will there lie taken caie of h> the proper authorities in due time The idea brought out and to l#c followed by the County Chnml#er of Commerce is most excel tail — toe cmopejaliiHi of representative men from all sections of the county with the authorities of Cape May in having the county business conducted in 1 a way that will reflect credit on all t concerned, save tho taxpayers' money* ' and keep the public in touch with < all those matters in which they * ... 4
should have a voice. It i» very easy to criticise the act* of public officials, without offering real assistance to those who are in charge of the condurt of these officers, and frequently there is too much of thi* sort of criticism, hut it is the thought of the members of the chamber of commerce to give constructive criticism and to help in erery way to advance the best interesta of Cape May County. In this way » » * ' W
the leading men of every district in Cape May will be in toueh with affairs of the county and assist their freeholders in all those matters that should have the beet thought of all. ta the end that the county may not run close to financial shoals ami the indiaeriminate charges of illegal transaction* will be a thing of the past. Bay County is too important in the affairs of New Jersey to he longer kept in a position where, justly or unjustly, she must eower under the finger of public scorn by reason of alleged acts of any of her | officials. The day of emancipation Is here. When the committee of tM'kntv. ' " cum mil ice or twenty-
five is named, it will be the duty an« the privilege of all to work xealously for the progress of Cape May County, the garden spot of New Jer■»y. o — BETTER TELEGRAPH SERVICE It is hoped by the people of <*«an City that the Western Union Telegraph Company will give this reaort better sendee than that accorded the town last summer. The Western Union, It is appreciated. does not make a fortune with its office in Ocean City during the summer season, but at the same time the public is entitled to courteous treatment, which, we are told, was not always given during the sea«rn of 1920. The company has had a summer office here for a number of years, and until last year, this office was open from 8 o'clock In the morning until * o'clock or perhaps a little later In the evenings. The office was do*.
•d for an hour at noon and in the •arty eveninge last season. This indicates a backward move when the iwnort is rapidly going ahead. The closing hour in the evenings l« too early. If this could he helped. Any of the operators at this office for the last two or three years will doubtless tell the official* of the compnny that this Is true. — — o Large holiday < rowd i The great throngs in Ocean City ' during the Memorial Day outing period attested the growing popularity nf this municipality as the premier family resort of America, as we have become know n. The visitors began reaching town Thursday evening, and from then un- J til Rumlay morning there was an ? tver-inereaaing flow from Philadel- }j phla and its suburb*, as well ^ other sections 0f the country. £ The bulk of theae visitors left » °«*ftn City tempararil) Monday «.
afternoon and Tue*du> niurning, but mod of them will return within u •hurt time and remain in thi* dial tiling resort until tire cool day* of Septeinirer and ociout. * The Sentinel take* piea-uM ^RT welcoming all to Ocean f'ity. Ma> ihoxnot alicud)'vnuiiilieie«l among the cottager^ soon return, umi ma> the> stay long— nut only until tire bracing du>* of Octtdier, but thrnughout tire year. o - WE extend congratulation* to City Corumi- doner .Kvoitou A. t'oixin «»n his election a* a member of the governing body of thi resort. He made
a strong fight and victory crowned his effort* umi those of his many friend*. He hu* been in the r^udbuilding business for a numlrer of years, umi Ocean City's highway* should, within a tea-, inutile time. *how tiie effect* of his practical knowledge along this litre. Mr. Corson may Ire hutidicup|ie<l, entering office virtually at the beginning of June, by lack of money in the street appropriation, in plan* lie may have for the improvement of the streets, and this will probably lie taken into consideration by those using the streets for hu*ine*s and pleasure. The street appropriation fur 1!»21 wus 42o,000. Of this sum, there inow about $11,000 remaining. — o WOMAN WINS St IT Mrs. A. G. Winkler of this city, brought suit before Justice of the Peace Francis H. Ware in the police court Friday evening against Harry Thompson, a neighbor, for the re- a of a Davenport in the posses- J ■ion of Thompson. The case wa* ' ln.,1 % # . • .. ■
before a jury of six men. Mrs. Winkler had loaned the article of furniture several years ago, it wa> testified, and he refuse* to return it. He claimed that he had done quite a little work for Mr*. Winkler, for which he had not lieen paid. Mrs. Winkler *aid that she hail offered to pay him, but could get no bill. The jury decided in favor of the compluinant. Thompson on Saturday paid the costs. $9.45, to Mr. Ware, and told him that he would return the article. e
— o — NKW PIER MASTER H. P. Saxon, father of George Saxton, of thi* city, is the new piermaster at the Ocean City Fishing Club. He hails from Hammonton. Mr. Saxton, although getting along in years, wanted to fight the kaiser during the recent war. He was with the 104th Sanitary Train, and was also with the boys at Sea Girt and Camp McClellan at Anniston, Ala., hut they wouldn't permit him to g,, across, much to his regret. — BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY' Miss Dorothy Jones, daughter of John R. Jones, of this city, celebrated her sixteenth birthday anniversary a few .lays ago by giving a small dinner party at her parents' home.
f. Her guests, itesiiles the members of ,| her uncle and aunt. Win. H. Jones and wife, of Philadel- - phia; and Miss Klizai*th Sinkinson. > of this city. Swan, f of the firm of Swan A Trout, this „ ritjr, keeps in touch with the news ^ of his home town hy reading the .Sentinol in Singapore, in which far-off |«nd he is located, being with a banking institution. "Joe," who was a popular Ocean City boy, was one of . the first to go from this city to the r oth*r *** during the war with Ger- | many. He did great work in the ambulance service. — ■ — o presented with car Mrs. Andrew N.
