ALTHOUGH Ocean City endeavored To prepare for the Fourth of July celebration of this week as far back a.» Inst January, not much activity wax rhown by many of the members of the committees appointed, ami there wax the usual rush a few Jay* lieforc the last minute to pet thing* In order. Thanks to several hulling business m<-n, mutters were shaped up and arrangements completeil. Possibly next year the plans wiy I* perfected early, -as was the intention this year. This should lie done, liecause cveryliody is liusy around the first of July and cannot -wdl pit* the time to arrange for ceWirntions. THE terrihlc deaths of the two young women on the Seashore road last week should nerve as a warninp to auto drivers,, and it may thus art for a short time. The affair came particularly home to a numlier of the people of this city, aj_ well as some of the visitors, by reason of their acquaintance with the unfortunate victims, and their sudden takinp off | without a moment's warninp was a severe blow to their friends. w SOME of the residents and business people expressed the thought a few weeks apo that this would be a poor summer in Ocean City, looking at the throngs now in this report, there docs not seem to have been much, if any, basis for their fears. There is every prospect that this season of 1921 will be one of the very best the resort, as a whole, j has ever experienced. • o AND still they arte paying toll to cross the automobile bridge. How long — how long? If the people want the toll taken off, why don't they take some determined notion in a way that will arouse the State sutho- j rities? ' ' Q i HAVE SUMMER SCHEDULE • The local trolley care are now running on their summer schedule, and there is a car every fifteen "minutes from 7 o'clock in the morning until 1L30 o'clock at night. The last car • for South Ocean City leaves the Boardwalk at Ninth street at 12 o'clock midnight. One may be able to Catch a car at Ninth street and Wesley avenue on the hour, and every ' .fifteen minutes afterward. A car leaves the upper section of the resort and also South Ocean City at 6 ' o'clock Sunday mornings. Why not j cut this out of the Sentinel and paste ; it up where it will be handy? j VISITORS AT CAMP j1 Among the visitors at Camp Nesco , Snolleupburg Cadet Corps, during "* the holidays, were Stanley Snellengburg, with Miss Snellenburg, daugh- , ter of Joseph Snellenburg, and also * : the letter's son. Others who enjoyed • visits to the camp oyere Mrs, W. A. Morgan;, wife of the commanding of- , fleer; Mrs. E. Engle; Mrs. F. X. Meyers, Mrs. J. A. Carroll, Mrs. R. M. K. Lewis, Mrs. C. Hall and Mrs. W. P. Mills, wives of the officers. SPENDING HONEYMOON HERE Alvin J. Cherdron and Miss Rebecca Mawson, who were married in Philadelphia. Thursday, June SO, are spending their honeymoon at the • home of the groom's father at 1011 West avenue. DOTS f Record-breaking crowd here on the Fourth. Raymond Gardner, of this pity, is doing duty aa a special policeman for the city. According to reports, some of the moving picture houses are suffering because of the 'high price of admission. The Porter-Smith Co. of this city, has been givep the contract to build new cement sidewalks and curbs in Pleaaantville. The contract poco~vas $12,000. The public comfort station off theBoardwalk, in the north section of the city, and the new pavilion on the Boardwalk, at Seventeenth street, have been completeil. Chas. Test, a young visitor here, riding a bike, and an automobile owned by Mr. McAI'ixter, a hotel owner here, collided at Ninth street and Anbury avenue a few days ago, and the boy was hurt In the abdomen.
1 FREEHOLDERS' FRIENDS STAND BACK OF THEM Say Hoard Members Made i ""Many Improvements at Itehest of Public • There is said to lie a growing feel- • a i'ng of approval of the recent'artioii ..r the Cape May County Hoard of "Freeholders looking To the early return to the various towns and cities of the roads within the Itordcrx.of ■ ? these respective communities Taken _ over by the county within the last few years at the request of civic organisations. Especially is the feeling >' said to lie "growing in rural com- 1 k munities. When these roads were (j y taken under the jurisdiction of tho s hoard, representing the county, the'_ , cities thus relieve ! .were saved considerable expenditure of money each ! " year for up-koep. repairs and light - • When the results of the investipaI tion-s of the commissioners appointed by the Supreme Court to delve > ' - into the conduct of county business c were made known, several weeks apo ,, 1 the public generally denounced the - freeholders, hut, with solicr second ^ c thought the views and sentiments of the people are being mollified. Many members of the Cape May di • County Board of Freeholders, their ! friends claim, were placed in an un- . ii just light by the stories and coni1 mcntx of tbosa-unfiroilar with cost ditlons. Most of the members of the a' txiard are men of unquestioned good ' standing in their respective cummuti- c( Cities, ami their friends declare that, p at the proper time, they will lie r found blumcless of any wrong doing. r In almost avery instance where the board constructed a new road or ' bridge, the members were urged -to a" r take this xtep by large organisations fc t cither in seashore resorts or i>f the county as a whole, these organiza- ja tions representing a grgat portion of g the heavy taxpayers of the various . communities. * 1 There was. always a cry for good di i highways for the summer visitors, C . anil, as the summer visitor, is the life of Cape .May County, as recognized 0] by every resident, be he just the nl ; ordinary citizen and taxpayer or r county or city official, it was felt ad- , jf t visable to comply with the ilemani ( of these civic organizations. The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce, an organization of en- _ , crgetic business men of all sections j of the county, anxious to push Cajie i May to a commanding position, par- J' ,- ticularly because of its many attrac- a . live seashore cities, rarely held a : monthly meeting without passing a . si ' j reaolutions urging improvements by ir 1 the board of freeholders. It Is a ■ ] strong: body, representing the senti- w ; ment of every community in the ai | county. This body, at a meeting in lbl5 p | urged the building of tho- Corson's ^ Inlet bridge, and its early start and I completion was advocated. The . chamber, at this meeting, also placed I itself on record ax favoring the conr nection, by bridges and otherwise, of , all the county seashore resorts. - P! , In tine with the proposition to have ' . a county boulevard and to connect j the seashore resorts, the chamber ft . decided to appoint a committee of one tl , from each resort to confer with the freeholders on plans ami specifies- p ■ tions for bridges over the inlet*, ami F , to prepare a survey of the roads, and ! bridges. „ The Chamber of Commerce, in n March, 1918, adopted a resolution ^ requesting the county to protect by w sod embankment all the north anil 1 east side* of the meadow roads in the ct • county washed out by a heavy storm. r The chamber, at its meeting in " ■ February, 1918, indorsed the action J' • of the freeholders in amending its ^ >l agreement with the contractors on I . the Corson's Inlet bridge to provide H - • for the construction of a swing draw m • of timber in place of the proposed tl ■ roll-lift steel drawbridge ovjr the • main ctuuinel, on account of the ile- w - lay in securing the steel drawbridge, p and to insure the early completion of ai I the structure. The chamber also adopted a resolu- p tion to "get after" the freeholders to q pave the main seashore road to Join 1 the point below Cape May Court : ! Hoi-se where the State was to begin ? work. This would be financed by the * ' j county, and the money refunded by * the State from the Edge road law ! money. The freeholders were requested by the chamber in December, 1918, to a , i moke an appropriation of not less h " ; than $10,000 for mosquito exterminn- ^ tion. .V " ! At its March meeting in 1920, the v chamber approved of the action of F j the freeholders in awaniing contracts p in the sum of $200,000 or more in a 7 Ocean City, Cape May and Cape May c " j Court House, and the lehaml-cr ex- . pressed its intention of backing the () ', i*iaid in the Jh-ard of contracts of a t i' 1-cneficial nature to the whole county. n n Only the delegates from Wildwood s voiced opposition. The chamber went on record In e - May, 1920, aa favoring the immeiliJ ate repair by the county of Third e avenue, from Avolon to Stone Hart, bor. - 11 As stated, the various civic organi- 0 f zn tions represent property owners, C ^ taxpayers and voters — in other words the people. The county board of ) 1 freeholders was elected to look after v the best interests of the people, and ii the people demanded certain things, c »• The freeholders responded. h
