POLLUTION KILLING FISH Di*a*terou* result* of sewage, ami oil pollution to fish lift in New Jersey'* salt ami fresh .water* was brought to the attention of Secretary Herliert Hoover, of the Department of Commerce, at a conftence halld- in Washington. -recently, to .ii*cu.«* this t growing menace to health an.l to' the public food supply, say* an exchange. Oil waste pumpeil from steamers off the coast ami factory pollutions poure«l into Inlan.i streams were shown to have ileadly effect upon -foo«l fish. The New Jersey Fish ami Game Commission was represented pt the conference by Congressman Amos H. Radeliffe, of Patterson, a member o ^ the commissi on hmf-Pro lector James , M. Stratton, of Long Branch. Alarming damage to tlie fishing industry front the careless operation of oil-burning steamers and tonkers was reported to the conference. In clean- . ing their tanks, many steamships dump the oil just outside the three- , mile limit, and floating, it is driven ashore by tide and wind. It frequently becomes .so offensive as to stop ; beach, bathing at North Jersey eoail resorts, while fishermen report that it is driving the big schools of fish seaward. out of reach of the shore fisheries ami anglers. Floating into! the shallow waters, the same oil kills millions^ of young fish and left! * as a deposit by the receding tide was i shown to be- destroying also clam and oyster life. A single instance of the far reaching effect of fresh-water- pollution reported by Commissioner Radeliffe, is the almost total annihilation of the shad industry in the Delaware river and bay. In other streams, such as the Maurice river, where pollution has been stopped the shad are coming back in large numbers. A MARK TWAIN GOOD ONE In his early days, Mark Twain, the author of "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Bin," was editor of a small town newspaper. One day he receiv- j ed a letter, from a superstitious subscriber. saying that he had found a ] spider in his newspaper and asking [ \ whether it meant good or bad lidc. ' \ Mark Twain wrote aa follows: "Finding a spider in your paper was neither good nor ^k#d luck for ' you. The spider was merely ldoking 1 over the paper to see which merchant was not advertising, so that he can ' go to that store, spin his web across %e door and live a life of undisturbed peace ever afterwards." Are spiders commencing to weave " their webs in your doorway ? A sure cure for cobwebs is customers — and advertising in the Sentinel will bring " them to you in increasing numbers. | This isn't theory or guff; it is asi° capable of precise proof as that a man named Harding is President of ' the Untied States. * 1 The Mark Twain story may Iw old, C but it 1s always new— it will Iw fresh * as long as this continues to Iw a wide- " awake world. f. Place an add in the Sentinel now i " and .keep the spiders away. FINING CONTRACTORS We haven't heard in several days just how well the garbage anil trash ! » this city are being collected, hot there have been many complaint* nt various times this summer regarding the attention given to these matter* by the contractors. It is reported that the garbage contractor has Iwcn fineiL or is about to he fined, for neglecting hi* work here. If this is so, and we received the information^ rem reliable sources. It Is surely a move in the proper direction. A few stiff fines on the contractors would doubtleess bring quick results, and results are wanted by the ! cottage owners whose garbage frequently ha* I wen left untouched for days by those whose.hunines* It is to collect the household refuse.
