CI TS THAT HELP — \[ J1 Congress has discoveredttwO-lt Jan r cut'Saxqs when it really makes up it* "t mind tbatthc job must lie done, and ' the (committee <ki far has made a most " creditable job of the work. Creditable because it hits every pocket- s book. e The reduction of the so-called lux- e ury Vnxes will also largely lienefit the '' middle classes, as it will remove the * nuisance of having to pay a penalty : t for many men now idle. The reduc- j t lion will have the effect of increasing . * business, as it will leave more money | to be used for business and other purposes. The tax curtailment, however, Is that on freight ami passenger traf- v fie. This will hit every pocketbook ii for it will mean cheaper freight and ;1' passenger rates to the extent of (248,- ^ 000.000,* hich will prove a stimulus!), to business of the railroads, and increased traffic- will mean larger re- » ceipta, and larger receipts will mean i n larger expemlitures by the roads for | n industry and providing employment ; that will give the most satisfaction. ■ 1 strangling enterprise. This reduc- j 1 tion in the surtax will benefit the j 0 well-to-do, but ought to promote ' ^ improvements and betterments, and j f this means work and business for j d many men and firms. 1 1 Business will be benefited and en- j 0 couraged by the cutting off of the ex- j J cess profits tax, which was really i ( for wear ing anything but the cheap- ! ( er grades of apparel. Another pro- ! viso that will lienefit many men of! the middle class is that increasing the • allowance for each dependant child Is to (400. This is common sense, as ' * everyone knows a child of 8 to 10 ' years cannot be maintained on (200 j per annum. j , All in all the Ways and Means ,| Committee has done good work, for j » this reduction in taxes means.' of I '' course that government expenditure* p must be decreased accordingly. ! c SERVICE ; V Haa it occurred to you how much « the word service is being used today 5 and what a pleasant gripping mean- ' ing It eonveys? It does not savor j of a desire to take something from t you but rather, it is indicative of an t offer to render something unto you. The oil companies no longer operate gasoline stations but service stations. ' Automobile, battery', and tire repair i 1 shops are now service stations. Man- ! J ufacturers and merchants generally , have adopted this word service. j t The individqal or firm that seeks 1 1 to build their business around the j * word service is sure of success. | The Ocean CRy Printing and Pub- j lishing Company in every department r of its business is seeking to build t with "service" as the foundation. 1 CANADA'S sixth decennial een- «' • sus. Just completed, shows a popula- j tion of 9,000,000, exclusive of the , thousands who are said to be sojourning there because of the liquid at- ■ p tractions. DELUGE OF AUTOMOBILES " Between the hours of 2 and 61 h o'clock on Sunday attatnoon, there | ), were 2071 automobiles* that passed \ the city hall on the corner of Ninth v street and Asbury avenue. It is al- |, most impossible to realixe the num- j, her of automobiles passing through ,i the streets of this city in the /m- j, mei time, until the actual ^(fmhers are brought before one's eyes. The p| average number of car* passing tliii given point, would be almost 618 ;*r hour, 'or about 34 li automobiles each minute during the four hours specified. On Saturday and Sunday the a automobile* reached their heighth hi ^ number* for the season. All of the a garage* were filled to their capacity r' and the street* and parking stations 14 and vacant lots were crowded. 1,1 o K VISITORS FROM LITIT/. * Misses Esther Grosh, Edna and 01 Allie Zook are spending a week in j 1 this city.
