Mrs. T. Dowdney Clark Writes of Trip (CoBtlnnad (ram mn u») • bile, steamer and on foot. Wc < visited the ostrich" and alligator ] ; farms and saw much to interest us i there and we of older growth became i little children once more as we j watched a big orange roll slowly i down the neA of an ostrich with ! many a twist and. turn; wc stood f spellbound, . simply fascinated, and .< "here's where our guide had to urge , us onward i to the -ostrich store. ; where we saw many beautiful fans ■ and wraps. unci w raps.
When wc arrived at the alligator ' farm, almost the first two big ones i we saw were named in honor of , President and Mrs. Harding. The , guide sairj that for years the couple ; had Jed a life of connubial bliss, but . that lately Mrs. Harding had become J so "cantankerous" (don't look for i this word 1n the dictionary, dear J reader, for you won't find it) that a j separate pen and yard had to be , given her next to her husband's, who ( 1 imagined had a heart-broken and i never-again-to-be look in his green- I ish eyes. Poor Mr. Alligator Hard- ' ing! We saw the alligator hospital,: where many alligators lay with swol- , len Jaws, broken arms, legs and tails, ] and occasionally an dye gouged out. : It seems they are fighters from the - time they are a foot long. In the little store we found many useful and beautiful articles made from the ] skin. That same day we motored out to , Hollywood and saw the movie ] studios, and a Httle further on we ■ came to Beverly Hills, where many of our best known movie stars have ] magnificent homes with specious • grounds. One day we spent at Catalina Is- ] land, twenty-five miles out in the ■ Pacific Ocean. How we did enjoy the I delightful ride on the briny deep with j J one big shark and no end of flying t fish and one porpoises to gladden our eager eyes, and then, at last, old ' Catalina rising up so mountainous . i and beautiful through the morning i| sunlight Upon arrival, we immediately left oar steamer, got into the glass-bot- J tome. I government boat and rode < over the Marine Gardens looking down through many feet of water J and seeing numerous fish, wooderffll plants and aba] one shells beneath us; a deep sea diver soon dived and brought us up shells from the oeecn's bed. while we watched him at work; he was under water over three min- | utes and was in sight all the time. J The stores on the island sell many i articles (some exceedingly pretty) ' made of abalone shells. After we left Los Angeles, having also visited Pasadena, our next stop ? was at Santa Barbara, where we visited the famous Franciscan Mi4-| si on, where a "brother" showed our ' party through the buildings, and jalso ' all the curios, big and Uttle. Among • them was an old Stein way piano i (first of that make in this country); ] it had come -into the possession of the "fathers and brothers" in 1853. I tried to play it (by permission), but, alas! little musio responded toj ray touch, for the leys were stiff with the weight of yearn, and the; strings were rusty and alack, yet long years before the master hands' of the "playing brother" had brought sweet golden harmonies out of thej wooden box, while the Indians sat in wandering sileaee around, then said, " Tis the Great Spirit speaking." 8oon this "father" taught them i music by little wooden blocks of dif-i ferent colors, each color representing a certain sound, then a book was made and similar little blocks were stained and in smaller *Torm painted on the pages, thus the Indians learned their notes. My letter grows long, so I will write about the "big trees" and other things in my next one. (Signed) MRS. T. DOWDNEY CLARK. PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank Weer, of Aububon, were among the recent visitors to this city. Mrs. Floyd C. Sltnms, of this city, was a recent visitor to Philadelphia. Mr. and Mr*. C. J. Kennedy and family have returned to their home in Wilmington, Del., after spending five months here in their Boardwalk ' apartment. C. M. Deltousso, one of the , best boosters Ocean City ever had, asked us to make him a lawn .. around hi* Ocean City property. At that time 110 one had seemed «• to think much about grass or shrubbery, except on Asbury avenue. In fact, no one realized how hard it was to get these things to grow k ami for several years a lot of time ami money was wasted through >- lack of experience as to what would grow-, untler seashore condi- " tkms, ami for proper preparations of soil and depth necessary to conserve enough moisture to successfully grow the plant* after '• planting. j* Location and exposures are .very essdhtial factors to be considered. Not having had seashore experience in planting, we decided to guarantee all trees and shrubbery plants) to the extent of another plant or tree.
