Harbor Townahip, Atlantic County. ! •and pai r' hie youthful da) - alone < the Je *) Coaet. The future hero I was the son of Colonel Richard Soman, whose title was well earned «lur- ! in* the ReTolutiuhary War. ami who . ' -pent the eln-unp «Jo>» of h's life jn < , the quiet -nriSlait* of Somen Point. < The son attended school In Philadel- I phia and later in Burlington, but in 1 lT'.'-t, v> V.cn still u half-grown lad of not more than fifteen, lie went to sea in a craft tilted at KyV Harbor. The navy of the nation was thbn building and young men. who hail shown some v experiness in the merchant se twice n V were giadly welcomed to the rank of E naval officers, and such a commission k w:a< given to young Soniers. V ''is u first crui.-e in the frigate frifteil a States his companion. midshipman was 1 Stephen Decatur, and until the close b of Somers' life, although rivals in a - professional sense, were the closest . . personal friends. Richard Sofcers was- given I.L-commi-.-ioti as a lieutenant in ihOL and two years later, on the breaking ' out of tlie waf .was with Tripoli, he was entrusted with the command of the Nautilus, a trim schooner which carried twelve guns, and which was at the lime attached to the Mediterranean squadron. Not long -after it was decided by Preble to blockade the harbor if Tri-' poli, and it was here, defending the flag of .his country, that Somers, not yet out of his twenties, showed himself a hero, but lost his life in the forlorn hope of a novel naval experiEvery reasonable and safe means ww* used to force the enemy to terms, but «when all else had failed it . was decided to rig the IpfTbpid into a fire ship and inferno, and send her into the inner harbor of Tripoli. Once there she was to be exploded in the midst of the ships of the Moors. Such an event it was hoped, would bring the natHes to their senses and cause theni to release the prisoners who had been taken from the Philadelphia when she grounded a few days before. Preble was himself tod gallant a commander to order an officer under his command to so hazardous a venture. Somers, volunteered, however, as did four of the Sailors from the ship which he commanded. In alb thirteen brave spirits were aboard the Intrepid when she sailed into the death trap. Captain Stewart and Decatur were among those to visit him when it was known that Somers was to gtton the awful mission from which there seemed no reason for supposing that death could be escaped. About 9 o'clock on the evening of September 4, the little craft lifter her anchor and went in stately silence toward the harbor entrance. Those on board the other American ships quickly lost sight of her, and the rising mists from the vessel veiled the scenes completely. Nothing but anxious waiting would bring the tiding of the Intrepid'* success or failure. As the night wore on there was a solitary gleam of light across the Inner harbor, followed by a rumble, and a mast was seen !c ri-e like a sheet of (lame, towani the iky, which became darkness again .in an instant. Beyond a doubt the Intrepid hail spread consternation and perhaps death among the semi-civilized sailors in the harbor,' but what of Somei - and the twelve brave spirits who- had volunteered to sccsmpav.y him? It was long hours before their, fate became known. At first the belirf was general that Somers had blown up the ships to avoid being taken, but before the war came to a close it was learned that hot shot from the batteries on shore and close "under the wall of the fort had been poured into the boat. As powder hail been placed everywhere including the decks, hut a spark was required to send her to the four winds and those on Iward of her to the land of the brave soul". Just how the heroic little Mainland officer met his death Is to this day n mystery, for none who had accompanied him ever lived to tell the awful talc, the story which »a* contained only in floating wreckage and what the anxious sailors had seen when the Intrepid was blown Into fragments. Many vessels have been named for this gallant commander, and his services were held in the high test appreciation by the brave fellow s who as...ciated with him, ami his memory ha* been one to which all good American sailors pay tribute. SURVIVED BY A NIECE "Aunt Jane" Anderson, a quaint character of old Somers Point, who Is nearing he . eighty-eighth birthday anniversary, is a niece of the hcoric naval officer.
