H.II Uuildinc r ■ It FIFTY year* ago the New Jersey shore, south of Atlantic City to Cape j May. was a stretch of «and with only, here aritl there a boarding house catering to Runners or fishermen. Nearly, ^ if not quite, half of this ha- been a bdllt up. At first there was little « in the way of building. Few men had r nny idea that property values would 41 Doom as they did, so it has been only in the last twenty years that rapjd growth legnn. If this continues an-t other twenty years at the present pace the shore will he one continuous re Any one who will look at a map of the Ocean City of twenty-five .years ago and at the resort as it Is Unlay, R would hardly recognize it as the same H place. At that time Ocean avenue wa • on the strand. Today it is far up in y the city, so rapidly has the beach been g built out l.y the drifting sand. This is p more pronounced in the "Gardens E Section," from First street to the e: mouth of the inlet. The Boardwalk |jj is again to be moved seaward and one „ cannot but Vonder how much longer the ocean will continue to wash' up sand and make wealth to those who own ocean front land with riparian a rights. Fir«t street was once the first p street from the inlet, but now there F are many stTeetn north of it. There = has been a big change on the hay front. The time was when there were a few shanty boat-houses there. Then when thg automobile became popular and could be. used to go between the Boardwalk and bay in a few minutes the bay front began to be popular. Men of wraith built charming villa* on the hay front with porches overlooking that splendid sheet of water with the ever-moving sail and motor boats and sunsets, Speaking of the sunsets .they are gloriously beautiful there when the sun -inks hack of the mainland pines and sheds its path- ' way of light aero— the Great Egg Harbor Bay. To the south twenty-five year* ago theie were nothing but sand dunes from Fourteenth street with a small collection of houses at Thirty-fourth street. Land cculd 1* had for 1100 a lot in the Fifty-fifth street section until the trolley line was extended them. Then South Ocean City legan to boom.
