HOW TO BEAUTIFY - CAPE MAY COUNT! » Correspondent Tells How to Make Cape May County a Garden Spot It would mean so much for the cotrnty and no little from each one of us; it would not only be a pleading right to the tourist that comes to our county, to our neighbor and ourselves, hut it would be a real asset to every ^one. The farm with the post and rail fence along its fields in good repair, with the grass, weeds and briars kept out, will sell for more than the one with dilapidated fences, overgrown with weed.- ami briars. Houses ami barns that arc painted or even whitewashed and up-to-date, not only pleases the bye and attract attention, but will sell iiuieker and for a better price than the ones that are falling to pieces, with window panes broken, roofs leaking ami no paint. "The County Beautiful" means to every resident of the. county not only something pleasing to the senses but real dol- » lars to every one of us. Cape Hay County could indeed be a "County Beautiful" — one that Would V lie known and talked of all over the ; United State*, for <!o not our resorts draw people here from every State in the Union? As it is. one often hears some one say— "Why, is it that the people of Cape May County with its; miles and miles of fine roads to drive over, dts not take more pride in fixing' up their properties Along the same ? Why don't they? largely because they have not thought of it, nor had any one suggested the idea to U^m. Nearly every one enjoys the beautiful things in life; nearly everyone is ' cleanly and orderly by nature, but j there are many who have eyes that do not sec and brains that do not suggest. And yet most of them woulcr1 gladly do what is suggested to them. I either by woftl or by example. | What Do We Need? Now, what do we need to do to make our county "The County Beauti- ■ ful"? Many small things — no really big things. Songs are sung and verse* written about the cherry bids* soras of Japan, and yet those same blossoms are wealth producers for the . people of that country, for they be- i come cherries. Why net then, for one j thing, clean out the- brush and, | branches in front of your farms, re- 1 1 build and repair your fences and plant ] apple or pear trees in a neatly kept ' strip of grass sod. By doing this, you will have gone a long way toward the* '! "County Beautiful" and at the same ] time will, when fall comes, derive a I nice profit from those same trees. Of ,| course, there are many no doubt, who ' would, prefer shade trees even though ]j tfiey produce nothing; in which case ] there are maple, tulip, poplar, button- j J wood and many ' other varieties, all j [ beautiful as shade trees. Now. step inside the gate an'd look! ' 'at the front yard. At present we -find . a few that delight the eye, and we aav ; — Oh! is not that pretty? Just seej| those flowers, the shrubs and wonder- ( fully trimmed tree. But in so many' there Is not a thing that appeals to - , any one. Let every one jfet busy ami j J vie with their neighbors to see which j front yard is going ffto attract the . most attrition in the future; study , your yards and see just what you can l do to bring about the best results and 1 above all things show originality, so that there will not be any two alike. C To do this, all one needs to use* is | what nature has so wonderfully given | us— clos -ly cut lawns, flowers, schrubs j and ornamental tree*, roses, vine*,: etc.,— the varieties are legion. Friends, ' can you see a virion and realize whajjh this would mean even to ourselves!?1 as we drive along our roads — let alone j the stranger srithin our gates— in i . place of what we see today? '| Itrpair the. Building Now, about the houses, barns and! outbuildings. Put them in repair and j paint them. What an improvement; , what a long step toward the "County Beautiful," and yet really like the others, a good A-l investment for you to protect what you have already paid ■ good money for. You Increase the life and usefulness of that house, barn or , corn-erib, and you please the senses * "f every one, even yourself. Another thing 1 want to mention Is the unsightly fence bogs and brush' hedges that Cape May County farms | have— ..ne hardly ever sees them else- , who.. 1 know that a few are useful 1 i and need. .1 a- wind breaks, but many are not and should he dug out. Your fields would be larger and so much Iftter and you yourself know they . would produce more. Where the few I are really vn'uahft, you .could make them a thing of beauty instead of the present unsightly lines of brush" and hilars, by cleaning out everything ' but the cedars, -cultivating their growth and in the years to come, have ; rows of magesiic trees that would l« a real and ready a-set. Again, a real profit made m helping to make this ; the "Cfiunty Beautiful." f i Some no doubt will ..ay. | have no I farm and go money; I lig^e . jmthlng J , but a cottage and :i bit »f garden. 1 What can I do to help in this work? Juxl the same a the farmer with his ; many acies, or the county gentleman with a flue estate, only you will have less to do . Just keep what you have clean,' pretty and pleasant to look at.
j There w ill be many that will see tha ? liltie cottage of jours, with th. clemaiitU and ivy running _pyer it, am ry the scarlet -age, phlox and verbena- i. J | the bit of front yard, that will nevei see the gentleman's estate, j Official* Must Help 10 Our township committee:-, city offe ' a grpat deal to help in this work. They can scrape and repair the roads when they need it and not whim it is con- . the grass ami weeds ami cut the brush 0f along the side of the roads when it ,g is growing and before it seeds, when ,s roads, instead of in the winter . when rv our guests have gone . It is the practi,j] ral thing to ilo and «>ill not rn-t a< r much and will help -wonderfully to p,' make 'The County BeaOtiftil." ic There are also a few ptJMlc and ■n semi-public places that much could lie at done with, at very little'cosl. For ins- stance — that unsightly frog pond at ly the county farm. A drive on each a, side, a walk around it, a summer I- house, a few benches, trees, shrubs and g flowers, and you have a pretty restful i, place — a real plcturt- ami-tin- cost alle most nothing. The-e are but a few thoughts and, B suggestions — almost every person in i '■ Cape May County could give as many, and if carried out, what a beauty spot , ° old Cape May County would lie. Iwt - d , each and ever yoite of us put our; e j shoulder to the wheel and give it a I * push. If there are any of us who have 0 not enough faith and ambition to, do I p that, do not knock the idea, for it is: e i sure to come. Goo>l old Cape May | *i County is going to be "The County | e eBautiful" and known as such overt t'our great country, if not beyond its J ! borders, and the sooner the lietter. j s . • A County Resident. ■ 1 . 1 Send those little personal items of s your friends or happenings of your t family, to the Sentinel Office by Tuest day of each week and they will tip- j . pear in the next issue on Thursday.
