P. 0. S. of A. Celebrates Twentieth Anniversary Great Patriotic Meeting — Clever Ventriloquist — Fine Speeches — Good Singing — Memorable Events

Celebrating their twentieth hirthilay, Washington Camp, of the Patriotic Order of the Sons of America, staged on Friday evening at their- lodge room in- the Hann Building, as fine as entertainment and p- liio'jc rally as ever witnessed in the city. From beginning to end the affair was nq unqualified success. The lodge room was fittingly decorated with bunting and flags, and all around the walls hung the portraits of our na- , tional heroes: George Washington, j Abraham Lincoln together with lesser . lights irt the firmament of American history. I John P. Kirby presided over the , celebration, ami amply demonstrated j his possession of all the requisite quai- f ideations of a leader. , The 'exercises of the evening were opened by the singing of Colmubia, by , the audience, after which Dr. Handlcv c pastor of the First M. E. Church, pro- s nounccd the invocationfi and Leslie , Hughes gave a very fine pianoforte n ; — 1 The first speaker of the evening was ^ introduced as George Smith, 'Mayor of j: Phillipsburg, and State Secretary of a the order. „ The address was a splendidly dcliv- „ ered and exhaustive history of the v illustrious order, full of patriotic ^ ferver. |, The P. O. S. of A., the speaker in- cformed'us, was the pioneer secret or- 0 der in America, dating its origin f rom the year 1847. Through the stressful - perioil of the civil war, the Patriotic Sons of America, wrote a chapter of history as thrilling and romantic as any in the annals of human kind. The order was primarily and fundamentally patriotic. Later in its career it became a benefit society, notwithstanding it still adhered to the creed and principles upon which it ~~ was founded, fidelity to America and her imagined flag. Patriotism, the speaker defined, as the highest affection of the human aoul. A creed of the lips, denied and dishonored by life was beneath conIn the year 1874, a number of men handed themselves together into a fellowship, for the purpose of perpetuating the liberties wpn by Washington, — and to combat the spirit of disunity and disruption which was then threatening to ■■ndermine the very foundations of the republic. Then came the dvil war, deluging the land in blood and tears, when J Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 men, the first regiment to answer the i call, were recruited from the ranks of the Patriotic Sons of America. So well did they a quit themselves on the field of battle, so true were they in

y, theft- allegiance to the flag, they were ic the only secret order permitted to d erect their tent on the field of battle, n and hold meeting^. ' Then in the. recent great World r War, the order won distinction, when • from one State alone, 17,349 of its r sons volunteered for service. p The order, continued Secretary 1 Smith, was one of the strongest allies " of the Christian Church. No person j " could become u member of the fratern-j » ity wlflutut first taking a vow of j r faith in the existence of God. 1 This rousing address was followed I by the star entertainer of the eve- j ' ning, Fred C. Trappe, ventriloquist. ' and dramatic entertain- ! Mr. Trappe demonstrated his: versatile abilities be>;6nd question. His first contribution was an impersonation of a colored preacher delivering a lecture on the "Apple" — a side- j splitting performance. His impersonation of a poor Italian purchasing flower with which to decorate the! grave of his little Rosa, brought tears many eyes, latter in the program Prof. Trappe appeared in the role of | ventriloquist. Tt certainly was a splendid performance. Speaking and singing, while eating and smoking, in varied tones of voice, the professor the audience in an uproar - of laughter from start to finish. Equallyclever was his monologue discriptive of a baseball game, with Hiram Brown ! apd his wife from the country among ;

the spectator.-. Lewis Gnndy was at his best in his singing of a qharming Rev. Chas. K. N. Yoojfelin, followed u with u short stirringNiddic.-s, emJ phasizing the need of a loftier conception of civic responsibility and patriotism. America, he said, was in the deadly grip of Mummonism. Everything noble and great, the holiest sentiments of the human heart were .being commercialized. Nrverthere less, he was hopeful the good sense of the American people would soon !e. | return to the teachings and principles' >>f our great forefathers. Idj Dr. J. A.ny boy born in the United States may some day be president of the Republic. Any town large enough to have a postofficc may some day" become a metropolis with subways and skyscrapers. To keep pace with the growth, fast or slow, of every community they serve is the ambition of the men and women in the Bell Telephone organization. To give good service today and to anticipate the needs of that service tomorrow is a responsibility we all feel. The Bell Telephone System is not a earment to be outgrown and then discarded. It is a living tiling that grows and develops as conditions require. Each community's telephone service is a unit in itself but it is also a part of a nation-wide system. / Every new improvement though it be developed / three thousand miles away is available to every Bell \ office where it may be used 11T giving a better and more economical sen-ice.
