' ran YEARS AGO ] c IN MKMORIAM a Twenty years ago this week fouini < Ocean City wearing the habilamwit.- s of mourning, lamenting the passing ' hence of Ei*Mayor Gainer P. Moore. " Death came suddenly at 5.15 o'clock j c in the morning, from paralysis of the , I1 heart. Mr. Moore had not been enjoy- » ing robust health for some time previous to his demise, yet no serious results were expected, inasmuch is he ' was able to follow his daily avocation, ■ and the da*, previous he was seen v planting trees on Moorlyn terrace. In various circles, church, social, civic and business, no man stood high- } er in the esteem of the genejat public ' apparently, than Ex-Miyurr Moore. v In the year ISM-Vhen Ocean City ! became a bojqfigh, Mr. Moore war. : unanimqiMtiy sleeted its first mayor. c — — fWa term of two years. He was re-elected for a Hke period 1 In 1886, 1888 and 1892. Again in the year 1896 he was elected mayor for 1 a period of one year, and in 1897, re- 8 elected to serve in the same capacity, 1 for a period of one month, until Ocean c City became duly incorporated ps a city. city.
In this manner Mr. Moore served the city as its mayor for a period of ' nine years and one month. j r At the time of his death, he was • still actively identified with the gov- r s emment of the city, as member of the 1 Board of Educution, and as a justice 1 of the pdace. Equally as actively identified was j 4 he in the religious life of the city. • 1 For a period of fourteen years, Mr. J Moore served as superintendent of the First Methodist Sunday School, and c also filled the position of a steward * until the day of his death. The mid- ' week paryer meeting found him in- 1 variably in his customary place. Evidently Mr. Moore's sterling virtues were known and admired beyond c the confines of his home city, for an 1 out-of-town paper refers to his death ' in the following worts r "Mr. Moore was a man possessing those attributes to a marked degree, which beautify 1 and ennoble a man's character. Of 1 quiet unassuming manner, attractive- * ly genial and abundantly generous in disposition, true as steel In all his relations with his fellows, devout and 1 faithful in his religious life, he could 1 not fail to gain and to hold the utmost ' confidence and highest personal re- ' gard of every friend and acquaint- 1 anee." The foregoing, we believe, should be ' of peculiar interest especially to the i 1 more recent residents of the city for Ij its historical value, giving as It does ' the date when the city became a bor- ' ough, the name and character of its ' first borough mayor, and also the date ' of the year when Ocean CKvJjmme ! incorporated into a city. The Ocean City Literary Society, we should think, spent & profitable and ] delightful evening at the home of Mrs. Dr. J. S. Waggoner, discussing the works and biography of our old friend, j Oliver Wendel Holmes. Announce- . ment is made that the next meeting, would be devoted to the Hoosier poet, James Whitcombe Riley. For one thing in particular, the frgle -Mm tibsfo THE CURDS APE NOW ] C SEE WHO BUYS I (' GARD
Literary Society deserves commcnda- it tion; it did not neglect our own poets - and .writers. The tendency among so- j cirties of the present day is to, tacitly P at the least, regard our national lit- b - frateurs as beneath their serious con- 1 sitierntion, and that no person can be t. thought a master in any department P of letters, unless he or she-has n name * composed of about twelve inches of I polysy tables, is utterly unprounceable, C i and ends in a "ski." ■' _ i: The Woman's Christian Temperance a held their social parlor meeting ■ at the Wyoming Hotel. Each, member was privileged to take n friend. >' The Ladies' Auxiliary of '.1.3 Fast • Presbyterian Church, held a straw- . berry festival on the Saturday of the ! week. The affair was staged in the I ' Fisher's hall in the Bourse building r . ; anil the proceeds, it is reported exceeded all expectations. But what s ' could a strawberry festival have I I been? ,! Was it a strawberry feast? Those S . not partial to s.iad and mackerel [ . supped might rejoice and be exceedingly Triad, if a strawberry festival ! . came around again. (
Twenty years ago Monday last, 1 I Ocean City Solons held an important ' . ; meeting, a brief resume of which also I i prove of historical value. t i ' About two years ago, we were pres- » | ent at a banquet, and witnesses! a very r i ' interesting competition. The banquet , as held to commerate the golden an- - niversary of the first bank in the city, i . i and a prize was offered to the person t J who could answer the greatest number : I correctly, of a series of questions > , hearing upon the past history of the I city. There were a number present j ; [ who had lived in the vicinity, during 1 1 . the entire period covered by the ques- j . 1 tions, yet the winner succeeded in an- t swering only 17 oat of a possible 24. ; t The first business taken up by the ' I • council, on this occasion twenty years I l was the appointment of a sue- ' , ' to the late G. P. Moore, on the ■ , Board of Education. ,j One wonders how many could give . the name off-hand ? By an unanimous - vote, R. B. Stites, an ex-councilman, , was appointed to the seat. , The burning question of the session,' . hwwever, was the matter of street imI provements. Ex-Mayor Robert Fisher, I presented before the council^ a series , i of recommendations from tie Board . of Traile. . j Without enumerating, or discussin|r* i the merits of the recommendations, . j the feature in the whole proceedings , whlc harrest attention, and gives unqualified satisfaction, is the fact that . the coghcilmen received the communi- . cations in: aqeb. «' statesmanlike spirit, , one after another expressing himself ; , in favor of adopting the program,; , suggested by the Board of Trade, as far as the appropriations would allow, j i 1 Unfortunately, this is not too com- j mon in the history of municipalities.1, j More frequently far, we find the gov- j erning body of a municipality, are too | t fj
^ conscious of their official dignity toj receive suggestions from any other] body, whatever may be the intrinsic] value of the suggestions. Granting that a seat upon the eoun- j '' cil of a municipality, does of necessity j b give access to a measure of inside information, not divulged to the public, j *1 y i
: J | ; does hot also include infalibility, or < ' a monopoly of wisdom. i When a body of men like that com- : posing a Board of Trade, or a Cham- • i tier of Commerce, after due delibera- , lion send in certain recommendations , to the administrators of a munici- ; pality, they should give it serious eon- i sideration. i Herein we believe lies the secret of Ocean City's phenomenal development 1 in the past, it is eminently gratify- i ing to know the same spirit obtains ; the members of our present ■ administration. No man 'is so big. as when little ; enough, to believe wisdom *■ -y come , from the .Hps of another man. < — Twenty years ago last Sunday, B. C. Marshall, now of the First National Bank, then of Millville, visited the dty renewing- old acquaintances. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Massey and son, spent the week visiting relatives in ■ Canterbury, Delaware. I Mrs. J. ,C. Scull and Mrs. Allen i Scull spent the week-end in Philadelphia. Twenty years ago this week, W. E. was elected President of the Pier and Amusement Company. Apparently too, in another respect , is repeating itself, for we find . City was at the period ex- j i periencing a big building boom. Contractors were finding it impossible to secure sufficient, men, carpenters and to meet the demand. We have not been able to discover! any statistics, otherwise it would be , to make comparisons with i the building boom raging this year, ■ and discover what in fact was con- ; sidered a boom in those days. No doubt Ocean City has very ma-
, terial changed its standards of meas- ; urement in tha( particular. By Jhe way does this law still ob- . tain? Warning is given in the Sen- .! tinel of twenty years ago, that it was . unlawful "to ride a bicycle or other i ] pedaled vehicle from May 15th to Scp- . tcmber 20th." Evidently a close sea- ■ ! son on bikes. The FULL PAID STOCK now being issued by the Ocean City Building and Loan Association is a very good thing for persons desiring to accumulate funds without subscribing for installment , i shares and al the same time receive 6 per cent, on their investr ment.
