TWENTY TEARS AGO Twenty years ago Ocean City ex pnrienred a nine days' sensation, hap pily rery pre is Its history. Vayango Sakano, an Italian laborei twenty-seven yean of age, employe in a gang engaged in repairing lh roadbed of the Ocean City Hectri Railroad, was stabbed by an unknowi assailant, somewhere about one o'dod Sunday morning on Centra! avenue between Twenty-ninth and Thirtietl streets. The injured man, who lived bt I shanty near Twenty-eighth street, wai attacked while on the way to get i bucket of water. The outrage at Bret seemed to beai the hallmarks of a vendetta, or the work of one of the secret societies peculiar to the race and country; foi the man Sakano had only, boo«»a week in the country, arriving In Oceart Citj direct from the landing at New York The wounded maa was taken to the offices of Dr. B. T. Abbott, about nine o'clock Sunday .morning, practically eight hours after the deed was committed. , — Dr. Abbott found that Sakano Had been stabbed in nine places, and that through one of the wounds the right lung protruded. Sakano coold not speak a word of English; but to Dr. Abbott, the interpreter said, that the man was attacked while on his way for water by an unknown assailant. There hail beer. ' no quarrel or disturbance, he affirmed, and no motive could be assigned for the deed. Later, however, it was discovered by the police officers, that the deed was unquestionably the outcome of a - drunken brawl, among the Italians occupying the shanty. In corroboration of this belief, it was also discovered that the man's associates had made every effort to prevent the matter becoming known. They had carried the wounded fellow to the Thirtieth street depot of the W. J. and S, with the view of spiriting him away secretly to Philadelphia for Finding there was no train until late in the afternoon, they were perforeed driven, at last to seek the aid of a local medical practioner. Dr. Abbott desired to have the man aant to the Cooper Hospital, Camden. His associates demurred, and tip to date the police have failed to discover where the man had been taken, or the ' Identity of his assailant. Another event, which perhaps occasioned considerable excitement in some circles in Ocean City, was the: Declamatory contest held under the — miwi of the high school. The competition was held in the Trover's Hall; the judges were President Silas S. Neff, of Neff College of: Oratory, Philadelphia, Mrs. E. P. McR George, of Woodstown, and Robert Fisher. Seven entered the contest named re- j sportively, the Misses Mary Pontiere, Bertha Sampson, Violet Champion,' Lottie Steelman, Bula Ernst and, Measrs Morgan Hand and Lyndon first prise was awarded to Lyn- ! don Ang, who recited the poem entitled "The Whistling Regiment"; the second prise went to Lottie Steelman, for her rendition of "Kentucky Philos--a; unsuccessful competitors elected J to appear with the following selections: Miss Mary Pontiere, "Little Charlie's Christmas"; Morgan Hand, (Intredeaad br Mayor Champion > ORMXANCK MO. !»• An^Ordinanre Auto Basis noad TSJ»AHO*OV COMMISSIONERS OF THE cm OF OCEAN cm DO ORDAIN: ■s»W— l-Tket It •Ami) ts unlawful tar ur poratkm. la operala -'.thin lbs territorial Umtte at lbs City of Ocean Cltr.
