THE MAN UNO HIS MESSAGE DR. JOHN HANDIiEY DELIVERS SCHOLARV DISCOURSE ON THE TEN VIRGINS Dr. John Hundley's originality of thought anil sermonic presentation, were strikingly illustrated ami exemplified in his discourse on the parable of the "Ten Virgins." It is a matter of .speculation whether or not, there is a fruRmcnt of scripture more familiar than this parable, an,l whether or not there is a frugmcnt which, as the late Dr. Dale used to say, "has been more preached at, preached about and preached over, without being truly preached" within; . the covers of the Bible. The parable has been made the ex- 1 cu.se for all sorts of preachments up- j on all sorts of topics conceivable inhuman thouRht; many, many of i which were as foreign to the true ex- 1 erReses of the parable, as a dissertation on agriculture would lie, based upon the classic poem, "Mary Had a Little Lagib," the sole link of association between the science of agriculture ami the ddggerfll hehiR, the word I "lamb." A typical example in support of the above contention, may lie found in iho— favorite sermon of a popular /evangelist on- the subject "Marriage ) Endowed with an imagination of, preternatural elasticity, tjie.. evangelist declares that Christ, iii the five foolish virgins, typifies the careless; and thriftless wife who neglects her household for trivial pleasures, ami ohversly, in the five wise, the dutiful ! wife who has u piece of pie or a nice! cake always on hand, should her bus- , hand bring home an unexpected guest j to dinner. Dr. John Handley's interpretation I of the parable was sane "and logical. It was scriptural and won the instant approbation of common sense. \ His treatment of the theme, however, was refreshingly and fascinatingly original and novel; while his application of the fundamental truths; underlying the parable, to the experi- ; ences and exigencies of everyday life ; was masterly and forceful. A party of literary men were one day discussing the religious out-look, ! anil the present depression, which seems to have settled like nn incubus! upon the Christian Church. Variou solutions were offered to accountKor the condition, one after; another shifting the burden of responsibility from the shoulders of the pulpit to the pew, and from the pew' to the age. Finally the editor of a religious ; journal spoke expressing himself after the following; "The church will never return ra her tention of the world, until the pulpit declares the truth pnd THE WHOLE TRUTH, courting no man's favor and fearing no man's frown. As long as the descendants of the Apostles, consult the whims of their congregation, veiling the truth in flowery euphemism, in fear of offending the susceptibilities of some nabob, male or female in the pew, the church .will never exercise the authority it should over the minds and morals of the age. Camouflage hay have a legitimate place in the army, but not in the pulpit." Be that as it may, the churgo of camouflaging the truth cannot lie leveled against Dr. John Handley. In his allegiance to the truth he is un-

I compromizing, anil fearless in his de-.s ' nuncintion of deceit. g In the course of the introduction to a Ei his discourse. Dr. Handley revealed a knowledge of modern science singu- ti ] larly extensive and profound. r , He referred to Christ's prediction of >1 | the final judgment npd destruction of g the material world. tl Christ predicted four event; which ill ! have become facts of history. He pre- c" ..dieted the destruction of His own life,- n i the destructfpj! of the Temple, the de- tl st ruction o{3ho city of Jerusalem, and p , finally the destruction of the Jewish » people as a separate national unit. 1 tl '• The jewish people were proud, and let ["{justly proud of the temple and the Holy City. It had become an article if "f faith with them, that whatever fi ?r- vicissitudes might befall them, they. >-• «'fliild, never lose their national ident- " e, ily; add because Christ dared to sug- p f- rest (tie contrary, they crucified Him p si ; as a thief. t,. Nevertheless the prophesy had berretr r, fulfilled, and the jews ever since have a njbecn a people without a country, a ii ination \v*th«ut a cnpitol, a race with- fi ;.|out a home, wanderers upon the fnre si j-jof the earth. (1 As the first prediction hail been fiil- ci ,f -filled, so would the fifth lie fulfilled, fi i-|Dr. Handley declared, and i|uotcd the fi general conclusions of "modern science a ,,| in corroboration. a The first world was destroyed by tl water; the present world will lie de- d -p strayed by fire. Astronhmers held, a -,| the preacher declared, that the sun was rapidly consuming itself. The d ip most iiiflamahlc of all material sub- fi i, stances under specific conditions was e, ,r water, and in the final conflagra'ioa of ■p things the greatest fires would lie fi ,f In addition, geologists demonstrate tl that the center of the earth is in n n ■p molten state, liquid fire; a fact which g in ; accounts for all osjsmic disturbances I: >r ami volcanic eruptions. The earth is n i,| vomiting out fire from within. w ij | "The earth was made in time" said •p Dr. Handley, "it shall lie destroyed a B. I in time, and with time." p it it was immediately following thb tl | htsr-prophcsy,» concerning the de- n i struction of material universe, that u |. j Jesus delivered the beautiful parable it of the Ten (Virgins. a \ Jesus was an artist, said the preach- y ,-. rr, and never indulged in grotesque s. t. horrifying details. The most solemn I; and awful of all truths. He clothes d is j in the most chaste of language and a j. in the mosr poetic of imagery. u 'p Dr. Handley then proceeded in an a illuminating way, to point out the ip ! analogies to be drawn, between the p It parable of the Virgins and that of F h the Sower. £ome seed fell upon hard T is i - — n ; — ■ - 1 - - * =

They were | all professors; all were dressed' alike; i all were interested in the bride and : , groom: all were part of the wed- ! | festivities; all carrieil lamps and , ( all expected to get into the feast. ' ; The one feature of difference and | distinction between them, was that , carrieil oil with them to meet all emergencies .and five did not." i Now, what really was the sin of the ( unwise Virgins, Dr. Handley went , on to ihquire. It is not recorded that | .they were wicked and immoral; it is not said that they were guilty of any great offense against the Mosaic law. a woril their sin wag the com- , moTiest of all sins — foolisl\e*e* Five ! foolish.
