ROUGH RIDERS RIDE ROUGHLY ROUNDING UP ROUGH RIDERS OF ROUND UP NO. 5 ROUGHIANS OF ROWDY RANCH I RAISK RUCTIONS ROUND I.INWOOD ' i Welcome Shake Certainly 1 Shakes 'em Well SINK TENDERFEET HAVE TRAV- « ELED SHEATHED IN FUMES , THROUGH DEATH'S HEAD I VALLEY As the shade* of night were clos- , \ ing aroumi the ranch of Round-Up, | No. 5, on Thursday last, there were | indications of considerable excitement, anil surpresseil hilarity, presaging another of the famous and infamous , raids, for which of late the Rough ( Killers have liccomc notorious. Absolute secrecy and consummate', cunning veils all their operations, and tiius far, despite the fact that the j ablest brain* and most experienced, in the respective departments, have , bent all their united efforts in the di- , recti on, both the police, local and state , and the military authorities,- have , licen utterly unable to cheek their , maligant <iepradations, or arrest ■ a , single memlxy- of the gang. Mystery enshrouds the cult, deeper hnd more inpcnetrable than that sur- ' rounding the Ku Klux Klah, or even the esoteric cults of India and China. They come and go as weirdly and j silently as ghostly apparitions, leav- ( ing a trail of horror and havoc behind. The very name Rough Rider ' strikes terror into the heart, and has become a synonym for unbridled mis- ' chief, and saturnine wickedness.-- "j, >' Their raids contain in them ^H-thc 1 elements of a -Russian pogrom, to boxer uprising, and -a bachanalian *evel, 1 in which the ancient gods of mvtnol- ' ogy were supposed to indulge. ' It is only by the most careful in- ' vestigation, sifting minutely every 1 fragment of evidence remaining after ' one of their raids, together with the most exhaustive examination of their victims, that we arc able to offer for the benefit of the public, and in , the ' interesjji-af self-preservation, the fotlowing account. This is done with the understanding , that It is of necessity, very incomplete, and the reader is counseled that , if he or she, would form anything like n true estimate of the terrible char- ; acter of the Rough Riders, and of their unprintable doings, to multiply I (he report by a million. Thirty strong of the Rough Riders mounted their steeds and away. Nothing in their demeanor excepting the elfish gleam in their eyes, gave indf- 1 cation they were anything but respectable, and at least semi-civilized human beings. At the outset, two bronchos balked. Whether this was liecause there still remained jp infinitesimal fragment of conscience, in the two wild half-tamed ponies or not (for there Is none left in the Riders, if indeed they ever had any conscience), cannot be decided. The rough Riders, however, are adepts in the fine arc of torture, with ] curb, snaffle and spur, and the two balkcrs were soon brought into a state of subjection. On the road to the rendezvous, some- j where in the wilds of Linwood, where the camp Arcs were being kindled under cover of night, the local riders I were met by a contingent of fortytwo, from the ranches located on the TAXI FLAPPERETTE MAKES HER BOW Miss Katherine Gilgore — who is she? No matter, the startled even Atlantic City. N. J- when she ap[wired in her black and white knici • crlH.cl.cr costume and was immediately dubbed "The Taxi Flappcicttc," a* she strolled the lajnous boardwjflt, - r d -
i bleak and barren prairies of Ptcilsant- j i ' ville and Atlantic City. | v ''Rumor has it that savage and bar- t bnrous as are the Riders from Ytic 1 1 Naeco Ranch, they are ultra- refined jj gentlemen compared with those from , , the othei named ranches. . ! j Arriving at the main ranch, desig- ,, • tinted for the evening's revels, all s I arounrl the camp was serenely calm f and peaceful. m Tfiis was ay ominous sign and n'a 1 portent of evil. It was the brief calm j which precedes the tempest and thc ;a storm, when nature seems as if gath- j ^ ering together All her forces for a' ; terrific onslaught, and the thunder ami j, r j making machines ,arc run- s "ing at high tension. TlVentually it provei) that not with- ' out purpose, the Rough Riders had . chosen that place of meeting. , A whisper passed around the camp, ; bronchos were mounted, and a contingent of the Roughians swooped' ° down upon a band of nine innocent ' I tenderfeet.- , Lassoes flew through the air with their sinuous serpentine coils, and in ' time than it takes to narrate, the ! nine defenseless creatures were being v ' dragged down within the unhallowed 0 environs of the ranch, reflections front j ' the fitful flames of the camp fires, | 1 dancing upon their ashen-grey faces. ' The nine tenderfeet rightly sur- * ; mised their fate hung in the balances, * 1 as they stood before what "the Riders - misname the Wise Council. ' .Finally the Unwise Council decided, jv 5 the tenderfeet should be made to pass through a series of fearful.. tests and 5 ordeals, to determine whether they ' s physically fit to live, /and suf- i r ficiently non-intellectual nnjl unmoral j 1 1 to become Rough Riders. -... | L'n fortunately for their future hap- j t piness and reputation, ibe tenderfeet | qualified. Rumor has it that it was . ' only by the skin of their teeth they ( j passed the tests ,8 fact which seem to indicate strongly, that they were endowed with some of the more sali- 1 ( f cut characteristics of civilized men. 1 . „ By the time they had passed . through the initiation, however, the, last vestige of civilization had been j, completely ground out of them. It has also been said, that Cheerful Guide Evan Lear, Grand American Roy E. Darby, Grand Vice American Bertram M. Darby and Welcome Shake Dr. J. Thornley Hughes, were . four of the Rough Riders who favored r clemency to the tenderfeet. There is more than a bit of irony in ~f the statement. Had the tenderfeet r known it, these four were their worst , enemies .and kinder far to them was ■ the Rider who proposed hanging. Cheerful Guide. Lear advocated t leniency, only that he might prolong the torture by cheerfully guiding them ' t through the labyrinthine mazes of , Death's Head Hollow. Welcome Shake i i't
chuckled with fendish glee, i welcoming the opportunity to shake j the last shred of moral courage out of • j their bones; while Grand American Roy Darby, ably assisted by his still ' more reprobate brother Bertram revelled in the prospect of giojtling over the shrinking horrorstricken nine, standing before, them the final charge. ; Their cars deafened -by the hooting ( and yahoing of the irrepressible j j and the rapid detonations, as if pandemonium had broken loose, suffocated with sulphurous fumes, j ,as though the lid of the pit had been blown off, their flesh creeping anil so j < sensitive, that a mere touch sent them j leaping up into space, the tenderfeet j were cheerfully guided through the j mystic rites, into the full but doubtful dignity and glory of Rough Riders. Some faint conception of the nature , | of the revels ami the proceedings, may j be gleaned from a fragment of paper, , found later upon the scene bearing the j following inscription. "Fun was served on a platter as dessert. ' Everybody came hungry and , went away full to the bursting. When Rough Rider cuts loose, the sky is :the limit." j Once again the camp fires were j quenched, and/the company made their ! In orderly disorder for the main' I Shore Line). ' It was ■observed that the respectable j i folk of the vicinity, fled before them j j with undisguised terror. ' , The cunning and duplicity of the; | Riders, adopted doubtlessly to evade1 . j detection and arrest, may be accurate- j j ly guaged grom the fact, that clad in ■ their sombreroes and full Rider re- | galia, they were mistaken by the innocent populace, to have been a corps of the newly organized State Troopers. The ironic humor of the situation, ! 1 breakers mistaken for law de- 1 fenders, is apparent to all. 1 The whisper passes around, that the 1 occasion and the ceremony of initia- ' i tion, was one which will oe long re- ! i FIRE ESCAPES j ' For all types of buildings — also— | Repaired and Painted We Guarantee Approval of Local ' and State Authorities on all out Work.
