MOVEMENT ON FOOT FOB INDEPENDENCE DAT CELEBRATION REPRESENTATIVES FROM CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS TO PLAN WONDERFUL PROGRAM Therentb all indications, that Ocean City will this year celebrate Independence Day, with a program of events' worthy of it At the noon luncheon tf the Ki-' wania Club, Dr. John Handler introduce.! the Subject, remarking in, passing, that some adverse criticism had been passed because there had been^ no flitting preparations made, for a civic observance of Memorial Day. He had been informed that a certain organization in the city, had in years past, taken the initiative in : formulating plans for the Fourth of July, and he thought it would be wise if the Kiwanis Club associated and cooperated. i , He suggested that a parade might be arranged, some music and an oration, demonstrating that Ocean City — : was not behind other localities in its patriotic zeal, -and progress! veness. Other members including the presi- ; dent, W. H. Collisson, Jr.. concurred with Dr. Handley. Mayor Joseph G. Champion stated that as yet no steps had been taken in the matter. In past years, he ex-j1 plained, ft had been the custom to: have a committee representing all civic organizations in the city, to act in conjunction with the Board of 1 City Commissioners, a precedure he 1 thought advisable to follow this year? ' Spencer Swan volunteered the in- ' formation ' that last year arrange- 1 ments were made for a grand fire- ' works' display, to the cost of approximately <600. A sum of <1,000 was raised by j popular subscribtion. If it was proposed to include a fireworks' display ^ this year, Mr. Swan added, it would ( be necessary' to perfect plans im- t mediately, in order to give the manu- j facturors sufficient notice. j It was evident that the members of t the- Kiwanis Club received .the pro- c posal wit henthusiasm. It icu felt j that Ocean City could not afford to do ( leas than other places, upon a day of 5 so vast importance in the history of ( the nation. Finally, it was decided that the 0 President, should appoint a committee ( of three persons, in readiness to represent the Kiwairis Club upon the general committee to be appointed. Tha chief speaker of the occasion ww J. F. Norton, of New York, a representative of the Dr. W. M. Scholl, orthopedic manufacturers, who delivered an interesting and instructtive address upon foot ills and foot pro- ' tection. Few people, the speaker stated, seemed to realise the value of the human foundations; and no part of the body is being subjected to so much negifct and abuse. The day is approaching, however, when every shoe store in the country of any pretentions, will be compelled bv public opinion to keep a trained man, skilled in the art of property fitting the feet with shoes. The whims and fads of fashion will have to Hive away to common sense, and a more widely difused knowledge of the anatomy of the foot, and of the fearful havoc caused by ill-fitting and 4 unscientifically designed foot-wear. The shoe should be constructed upon the design, which would afford the proper support and protection, without interfering with the move- _ ments of the foot, and the action of the delicate muscles. :< Mr. and Mrs. Samuel J. 'OCEAN CITY BOOSTER ; ON "A WORLD IN NEED" VERY REMARKABLE POEM READ AT THE FIRST M. E. CHURCH d DURING SERVICE C. H. Harrington. Iiesides being the , * executive secretary of the Army and . e Navy branch of tne V. M. C. A., is a • s poet of no mean rank and order. <- In addition, which furnishes even ; greater evidencr of his wisdom, sagacity and intellectual attainments. . >' Mr. Harrington is an Ocean City t booster of over twenty years standing. > s "It Is a joy," he writes, "to see how ; a Ocean City is growing and impfov- 1 ing." Fear of afflicting torture upon | an innocent ppserby, alone prevents , us from breaking out into song. "He's , a Friend of Mine." 1 At n recent service held at the First Methodist- Church, and at the 1 t request of Dr. Johrt Handley, Mr. 1 Harrington read a remarkable poem , " entitled. "A World in Need." 1 At the conclusion of the service, e so many asked if copies of the peom ; - were available .that the suggestion ■ was made, that it should be published in the Sentinel. This we gladly do for the intrinsic . 7 merit of the poem, one that deserves, 1 I in many respects, to be ranked with Kipling's Recessional. The haunting apostrophe introduc- 1 < ing each stanza grips the imagination. 1 - It is a prophetic call to higher and I = f holier ideals and aspirations. The needs of a broken world are given voice. Yet it breathes a spirit of optimism and hope strongly rem- 1 "= — 1 ; HOW SAVING HELPS ' When you save money you help build up the community — help the schools and institutions.
