TlUdENIY YEARS AGO I Sunday June 22nd, twenty years.' ago, was an eventful day * am! ever I memorable, in the history of the First ethodist Episcopal Church, of, Ocean , City. S- , In the course of an extremely ae- ■ live and successful public career, William K., Massey has participated in many H(ppy ceremonies; we venture ' to think however, that no occasion J brings, more fragrant memories, than when Tweuty years ago, he was calied , upon to kindle the match and the * II a me, which consumed tlic mortgage, as a visible and dramatic tokpn, that 1 the church was free from the incubus c of ilebt. A fascinating feature in the pro- 1 gram of celebrations was the pres- •' cnce of a distinguished father, and a •* worthy son on the platform together ' lioth vitally and equally interested in rthe proceedings, both by their ilhre*-'1 milting labors having contributed no ^ small share, in bringing into effect : the grand consummation of the day. ? Prior to the burning of the mort- 11 gage, the Rev. W. A. Massey, during whose pastorate the edifice was erecte<l, delivered a scholarly ami intresting v address, in which he reviewed the " past history of the church. a The oration, hail we the fpace available, if renririted would make irtltr- F esting reading, to many, outside of the a Methodist fellowship; for we find that p the development anil progress of the s ' church, synchronies • very strikingly with the devclopmment-and progress c of the city, anil obversely the progress ., of the city, 'synchronizes strikinglv t wiiMJH progress of the church, in- t dioating tile church of the First M. E. and' its leading spirits, were active in ; v all civic aflairs. It transpires that the First Methodist Episcopal Church, was founded in the year 1880, with the Rev. E. B. " I.ake as pastor. 8 Rev. W. A. Massey assumed the 1 pastorate in the year 1890, and im- " ) mediately he applieil himself to the ardous task, of providing a fitting home for the flock of his care. Through the generosity of "Frank R. Whiteside, of Philadelphia, who contributed th£ first $500 towards the project, by August lltt, 1890, the foundations were laid. The same devoted brother, defrayed' the cost of the marble block, which contains some sacred momentoes in the foundations, and further defrayed the expenses involved in the laying of the foundation stone ceremony, which : was performed by the Rev. A. RittenImuse, of Philadelphia. The corner-stone was laid with the , - understanding that the church should , lie built and dedicated, one year later '' to the very day- It was an ambitious § undertaking for a small congregra si tion; nevertheless it was successfully! i; accomplished. Rev. W. A. Massey narrated one in- • cident in relation to the erection of the edifice, deserving undying remembrance. It transpires that among the members of the Sunday School, there were four girls who called themselves by the euphonious name "The pRosebuds". . These four girls, dedicated them- 1 1': selves with consecrated abandon to ;! the building of the church, and by the *

I cient money Trr pay for every' brick that went into jhe foundations of the building, which work was performed ' without charge by the firm nrstone- " anil Adanis. " 11 be regretted that the names, of the four w;ere not preserved to V ! *. Following Rev, Massfey!s lUilmiMllive address, his son assumed charge , of affairs. The father had beeii inj st rumen tal in building the edifice, am" , ,!lp soil had been' largely instrumental |. as chairman of the debt committee, in , freeing it from the fetters of debt. , his address W. E. Massey gave utterance to some observations worthy ; of repetition. "The danger is of a tendency, after the obligation is wiped out, fo let up awhile from the effort .and be selfsatisfied with our performance; and witH content to smile easily among ourselves, and begin to fold our name _ as if "all were done. It seems as if this occasion ought to be regarded as call to a higher aim, and a more stiejiuous endeavor for the upbuilding of the Christian Church. What Jw- have 'lone is of ' little avail; it iksplyyays of necessity what we will now again do. today and tomorrow, that is of greatest importMr. Massey then presented' - the President of the" Board of Trustees, and the esteemed editor and proprietor of the Sentinel, R. Curtis Robinwith the mortgage. Mr. Robinson congratulated the committee upon their achievement, and returned the document, which, in , the presence of the largo congregai tion, was set on flame by Mr. Massey. R. Howard Thorn, donated the sil'ver tray, upon which the paper was To Mr. Thorn the occasion was both happy and sad, a season of thanksgiving and sorrowful memories; for it appears that he alone of the origi-
