~~ " ~ I ' OCEAN CITYQUEEN OF AMERICA'S FAMILY RESORTS. A tight little island, set like a translucent emerald resting upon a bod I of opalescent "Blue, is Ocean City. * Nature was in a propitious mood, when out of primeval nebula- she ' fashioned the island, and lavished upon it the largesse of her artistic genius. Every inch of her boundary line caressed and fondled playfully, by the i waves of the mighty Atlantic, fanned by every vagrant breeze that blows, breathing the invigorating, rejuvenating breath of the deep, surely it was ; here amid the silences and the solitudes of the unchrunicled past, that f poetry, and music, and romance, were born. I Even the grim and merciless ocean appears to restrain its rage, and its lust for displaying its power, as it approaches the island's open anil £ unprotected shores, myKseTHoIti is its touch harsher than a mother's soft ( It would appear moreover, the island has ever been a special favorite "ami protege of Dirfne Providence, as if it had been held in reserve for a special destiny. It lies almost within the memory of the living, the day when the Lake brothers crossed the waters of the bay, and discovered the island. c No earlier history is known; no trace of savagery or of an earlier bar- ' baric civilization have been unearthed. It would seem as if Providence had decreed, that man should try ouU "his 'prentice hand", and serve out to the full his apprenticeship as a buildei 1 of civilization, before he should touch the virgin soil of the island. Be that as it may, this is certain, Ocean City stands today a proof ab- t solute and incontrovertable, that "righteousness exalteth m nation"; that c righteousness and only righteousness can Becure for a nation, or a city, the highest and noblest quality of prosperity; that a city may expand and de- f vclope, and acquire, material wealth, without departing the fragment of an I inch from the highest type of social and commercial morality; thkt despite the criminality, immorality, sordiilness and viciousness of the age, there are t sufficient people remaining on earth, to appreciate and contribute to the growth of a city, the character and reputation of Ocean City. , There is an impression current, that no vacation resort can hope to ; develop and prosper, unless Its people are prepared to wink at license, hold t the accepted conventions of soctel morality in light contempt, and gamble with purity and chastity. ^ In the last analysis the supposition is a foul slander upon human nature. | It is a gratuitous, and an unwarrantable assumption, that men and women are essentially beasts; the beast and the brute covered over with a thin veneer of refinement and culture. Man indeed has the body of an animal and the passions of a brute; but he : was a soul and a spirit before he became possessed of the body of an animal. 1 ' The body is a product of time and material causes; the spirit is eternal. To the spiritual is given the inate power to ;hold*!n leach and subjection, the 1 passions of the animal. 1 1 The Maker gave to man the body of a brute, Said the man "Am I your debtor?" 1 1 The Maker said, "No. Keep is clean as you can, i m Some day I will give thee a better." It is a baseless and wicked libel upon the essential nobility of human , nature, to assume that no resort can prosper unless it panders to-the baser instincts of the beast; unless it throws wide open its doors to the questionable , cabaret, where the half-drunk whisper veiled obscenities, in the ears of the t ' half-dressed; that it must admit the dubious dancing hall, the gibled dazzling , gambling den, and abandon its beaches and promenades to the revels of M There are unfortunately both men and women, in whom the spark divine , lfts smouldering to extinction, under a thick incrustation 8f gross materialism and animalism, to whom such places have an irresi stable appeal. They are welcome to them. Ocean City has no welcome for them. ' Ocean City gives the lie to the libel, that no resort can prosper without them. The Lake discoverers of the Island, almost as soon as they landed, dedicated a tract of the virgin land to t'.ie glorjr of God, and vowed to the vaulted ! Heavens, that the unborn city should be built upon the solid foundations of 1 Christian principles and ethics. Through the years the* dty has attracted into its hospitable arms, men ' and women of kindred spirit, who have maintained tbt same traditions. Despite the fact that Ocean City, has never departed from the social t creed and morality of its puritan founders, within the span of half a century ' or less, its barren sand dunes littered over with rank marsh grass, have < disappeared beneath splendid -spacious hotels, handsome residences, lofty and i ornate churches, cosy bungalows, with wide, well kept streets, as if by the touch of u magician's wand. Men come here now for rest and recuperation, environed by visions of - natural beauty, with a variety of relaxation for jaded nerves and spirits, where the sanctity of the Sabbath and of the home is respected and pro- , tec ted without fear that his wife or daughter will have their eyes or ears offended by vulgar indeeorousness, or annoyed by the salacious importunities of a lounge lizard, sucking intellectual nutriment from the head of a malacca cane, or of having the defences he has with care and love, erected around the adole-ence of his boy, torn down by the ruthless hand of a demimonde. Not in spite of all this, but rather because of all this. Ocean City has prospered. Ocean City desires not the money of a person, male or female, whom it cannot invite into its homes as a member of the family. It must not be imagined however, that Ocean City, by reason of its character, lielongs to a dead and gone age, is antiquated and a survival of a century old civilisation. There is not a vestige of the backwoods associated with the dty; in fact it has no wood* back or front. Ocean City it modern to the Nth degree; modem in the construction of its streets, hotels anil homes, and its public utilities as far as its wealth allows and its population demands; modem in its government aiM administration; modem in its recreational facilities and amusements. Ocean City pulsates with civic pride, its leaders keenly alive to their *ivic abligations and duties, keen and alert to adopt any means or measure, to the material or moral advancement of the city. The barometer of a dty is its Chamber of Commerce. The Ocean City Chamber of Commerce throbs with vitality. It embraces every form of business and profession represented in the dty, and its leaders- arc men of indubitable statesmanship and executive ability. Differences of opinion and diverging interests, are all subordinated to the welfare of the community collectively. Through its various committees, the Chamber of Commerce functions in every department of civic life and endeavor, anil whenever necessary has not failed to voice its criticism, or protest where protest was deserved. Various enterprises from which the dty is deriving incalculable benefit j -and profit, may be traced in their inception back directly to the Chamber; of Commerce. With commendable enterprise and foresight, to meet a growing need, the Chamber of Commerce is at the present time engineering through successfully, the erection of a mammoth beach front hotel. Second among civic organizations in age and number, comes the Young Men's Progressive l-oague. The League has a history prescript! vely its own, and a record of dvic and social service second to no oyutr oTRanizaUon of its character in South N. Jersey. It has proven a valuable training camp for many who are today, accounted leaders in public thought and movement; several there are, foremost lh the varied activities of the Chamber of Commerce, who served their apprenticeship in social leadership, upon the floor of the Y'oung Men's Progressive League. Of more recent origin is the Ocean City Kiwants Club. Jhe Kiwanis.

noon luncheon has become a dty institution; and. though comparatively I young, the club has an enviable record of civic achievements to its credit. j! Above all the Kiwanis Club has taught the business and professional of the dty, how to combine play an,! work; work while at play, anil - play while at work. The ladies of the community are not a whit behind the men folk in . civic enterprise and pride. Above all it 'should* be emphasized however, that the civic organizations all without a single exception, in absolute agreement upon one thing, a fixed determination to maintain unimpaired the early moral and religious j traditions of the city. Somewhere we have rend of Oeeap_ City as a church city. Whether thai 1 uppellqtion was made in a spirit of flippant ridicule and cynicism, or commendation, Ocean City glories in the imputation. It is a church dty; but Is not churchy. It has its churches, ami- a scholarly evangelical pulpit. Its churches flourish, and Sunilay in Ocean City |, is respected. ,| It matters not in what direction b visitor's predilections may lean, reln-lj, live to recreation aif.l amusement, prodding they come within the boumi^ v of circumspection arid decency, they may lie nmjdjyfndwlgod in. b Upon the Boardwalk there are six theatres with daily exhibitions and!ii 1 performances. Without exception all are conducted decorously in keeping, : with the general atmosphere of the dty, and the proprietors exhibit only a . the pictures which are of real artistic worth, and of unquestionable morals. I Pictures woven arounil shady sex problems, or any which tend to underi mine the foundations of domestic ehastity, are strictly prohibited. " u Lovers of the tcrpsichorean urt, find in the Casino Club, congenial fel- '' 1 lowship under the rigid chaperonage of a person, who is a perfect master)0 ; of the art, a gentleman of unimpeachable character, almost romantic in his j high sense of honor and idealism. The disdples of Isaac Walton, may indulge their passion with utter'3 abandon in Ocean City. The Ocean City Fishing Club, and the Angler's : offer fellowship of the most congenial character, with splendidly built j f piers and club houses. Or should the visitor prefer to bait his hook in solitude, for a nominal t charge he may hire a boat, and navigate the bay at wilL „ The Ocean City Yacht Club, is without a rival on the coast as a social organization. The atmosphere .of the spadous, In ugly furnished club house, h is fragrant with the breezes of the sea, and me breezy gopdfellowship of h 1 the members. 1 li Ceremonialism and formality, are as alien there as on the quarter deck.; visitors who have a love for acquatic recreation, will find in the Y'acht j h Club a fine company of men, who are the very soul of honor, encyclopedic in a their knowledge of sea lore, the intricacies of yachting, and the mechanism 1 1 of a power boat. • [ ■' Ocean City this year makes its debut as a center of outdoor athletics, j : to become the rendevouz of the • world's champions, in the various ' ( of spprt. An ideal baseball park is in process of construction; and the dty is ( | providing a dozen well equipped tennis courta, in various parts of the dty. The/blue limpid lagoon, its floor carpeted softly with silvery sand, by! the Y'adit Club House, has no equal on the Atlantic seaboard for acquatic j I spofts and feats of prowess and skill. It has only to become known and the ! merman and mermaids of the world, will pine to gambol in its waters. Ocean City literally teems with hotels for the accommodation of visitors, 1 c furnished in varying degrees of excellence, a few with appointments equal I the finest hostelry in a metropolitan city, and numerous others ot lesser ' t pretensions, cozy, comfortable and scrupulously clean; yet all conducted with ! a strict regard for the proprieties. 1 . There is no hotel on the island where a young woman unchaperoned, 1 would not be as safe as in her own home. I Pepple seek a resort for the primary purpose of recuperation and 1 .'health, to rebuild the wasted tissues of the physical frame, and to accumulate energy and vitality for the winter's tasks. . Comparative statistics, compiled by the State authorities, show that , ' Ocean City has a lower rate of infantile and adult mortality, than any resort | in the Union, of equal population. Epidemics are unknown. Thousands are finding Ocean City an ideal summer residence, while they ^ Through the untiring energies and foresight of certain leading men of' the city, Ocean City enjoys the facilities of a railroad service, superior to 1 that of any resort on the coast. Transportation from Philadelphia and New ; Y'ork has become a matter of easy choice for the traveler. Direct trains run both Pennsylvania and the Reading Railroad systems, with a liberal daily schedule, and connections are made with Atlantic City and Camden by Shore Fast Line, during the summer with a half-hour service. The" season of 1928 wilfbring still greater improvements, of inestimable value and convenience. A passing word might be sflded concerning the dty's administration. . The city fathers are not infallible; nor are they not amenable to reason and I suggestion. The Mayor, thank goodness is not perfect; if he were he would • be an insufferable bore. A perfect man in any community of humans would be. The city Solons are not perfect or the administration would be an in- ! sufferable bore multiplied by three. > Nevertheless none can charge them guilty of deliberate maladministraI tion, or question their integrity. As far as it lies in their power and means, r they are prepared to adopt any measure wh^h would lie to the advantage • of the city; ami where they hr.ve' blundered they have blundered as all men 1 are liable to do, innocently. A description of Ocean City would not be complete, if reference to our stretch of ten miles of beach were not mentioned. -As far as the eye pan f reach the sands stretch away into the sea and sky line. Although this editorial does by no means exhaust the virtues and ex- " cellences of Ocean City, it offers ample reason to justify our pride in it, and 5 to substantia^^he claim we make that Ocean City Is, the Queen of America's ' family reso™^ I
