MEMBERSHIP AND CIVIC BANQUET demonstrate that the proposed pageant, to take place Septemlior the sixth, to the eightfilrtelusive, was the most colossal ami jlevcrly devised scheme of advertising, that enterprising city had undertaken^ The scheme would cover every state . in tlie Union, and make the names of Atlantic City and other neighboring resorts along the coast, familiar in every city ami village, into which a newspaper enters. The pageant, Mr. Kmiicott went on to explain, would inrlmle some very remarkable features. A day would l»e devoted to trapxhooting, golf, and tennis championship tournaments. A gorgeous water carnival entitled the "Arrival -of Neptune," n roller chair parade, ami a bathing beauty review. A faint idea of the magnitude of the advertising, enbodied in the pageant, may be gleaned from the statement that the committee proposed to spend $10,000 in railroad fares, in bringing the most beautiful women of the country who were to represent King NepThe woman who was declared by popular choice the most beautiful of all, would be designated Queen of the Beach. The city of New York alone was spending enormous money in the effort, to secure for one of its own daughters, the covetbd honor. As Mr. Endicott explained, the pageant will bring many thousands to the coast who have never ventured thus far before .and all "the resorts which participate in the pageant will of necessity, reap a share of the gain ] through the naKon-wide publicity given to the event. The role of chief speaker was of course reserved for Judge John _B. Kates of Camden. Judge Kates' delivered a remarkably interesting anil instructive address, punctuated here and there with flashes of delightful humor. It was evident that Ocean City, occupies a warm ami secure place in the affections of Judge Kates. He re- , ferrcil with manifest pride, to the phenomenal growth of the city within recent years. It was evident also that Judge Kates sensed the danger others have expressed of Ocean City, in the glamor of prosperity departing from the traditions and the principles, upon which the city was founded. Ocean City cannot advance without outside capital, he said. It was so close in the history of Atlantic City, _ - and other cties. Ocean City attracts a class of people which no other city on the coast does attract. On the other hand other resorts attract a class of people to whom Ocean City lias no appeal. If Ocean City desires to continue to -attract the class of people it has in the past, then under no conditions must it lower the harriers. The city's future ptogreaa and advancement, <lepends upon maintaining very clearly defined the difference, which has t-lwajn distinguished it from other reaoi ts en the coast "I desire Ocean City," said the Judge, "to be a place where a man may' bring his wife, son and daughter ami know they would be safe from co.it'.miuation. Modern business iloes not demand that we should let down the bars to succeed." • LThe learned jurist endeifJiis oration, . uitli rv wonderfully instructive description of the proposed Delaware bridge. When completed the bridge would stand an imperishable monument to the enterprise and statesmanship of the men of South Jersey, nnd he one of the greatest feats of. engineering known'-, to history. J. Frank Sheflenberger followed with an address -full of fire and enthusiasm. It was Wry evident, however, that beneath the humor, with which Mr. Shellenberger denounced the rumor, which seemingly had been circulated to' the effect, that he was of Hebrew descent, there was some resentment and indignation. It was evident, moreover, that the, L} company present shared Mr. Shellenfin inaniliiii — - - —

Since Mr. Shelleniioger has become i e identified with business in Ocean City J p anil its Boardwalk, no man has shown ' ,1 greater zeal, or thrown himself with , greater enthusiasm, into every public J movement making for the advance^1 ment of the community. He Iniiled J ® with delight the prospect of building j a beach-front hotel, pledging to sup- i K port the project morally and rinan- J " dally, as far as possible.
