TWENTY JRS AGO " It would appear that Ocean Cit has ever been partial to patriotic celt b rations, on the Fourth of July, an that there has always been a sor of conventional order of festivities. Twe»ty years ago a very ereditabl program of events wan arranged bearing in mind the sire and the popu lotion of the community. m The sponsoring organization thi: year was the Ocean City Kiwani; Club. TwetOi wars ago the K's slil ' had it, the^inoriBg spirits In the celebrations ami particularly in the preliminary arrangements, being the Kalmia Trilie of the Red Men. — 3^ie partriotic rally was held in th« - Auditorium. The exercises were conducted by President Lake, while a Dr. Hnrtine conducted the devotional part. The orator of the occasion was the Hon. J. W. Newlin of Millville, an Kx-State Senator, and a public man of considerable confidence. Mr. Newlin is reported to have delivered a very instructive and interesting address, in which he "traced the growth of the United States, from the humble birth of thirteen struggling colonies, to the commanding position it now holds in the forefront of the great nations of the earth." A serie* of sport events followed, which ended in what was,^in those very' primitive days, considered the ne plus ultra of sport, the climbing of a greasy pole. Another feature of the fourth of July celebrations twenty yeirs ago, worthy of mention was the presentation of a flag and flagpole to the city, ' through the joint generosityof four friendly societies; the Knights of Ppthias, the Junior Order of American Mechanics, the Patriotic Order of the Sons of America, and the Daughters of America. The pole, measuring 87 feet high, wis erected on the lawn adjoining the fire house, at Ninth Street and Asbury Avenue, surmounted by a: beautiful flag, measuring 20x40 feet - *"x The flagraising exercises were of, — an elaborate order, carried out with V all befitting . dignity and ceremonialism. Mr. William Lake was deputed to make the presentation. In the course of his oration, Mr. Lake reviewed in . brief, the circumstances surrounding the making of the flag. He spoke of the action of Congress appointing George Washington, to decide the colors, and their arrangement in the ensign of the nation. Mayor Champion in behalf of the city, had the pleasant duty of receiving and acknowledging the gift. Of course the day's festivities ended logically in a fireworks display. Through the efforts of CapL Scull, the sum of $75 was raised by popular j subcription for the purpose. Announcement is made twentyyears ago that R. B. Stites, who had | recently retired from the lumlyr business, was building "one of the most beautiful and commodious boat houses along the bay." The house was to be of colonial style, and of somewhat unusual plan. The first story was to 1* fitted up with all the paraphernalia of a boat house. The second and third stories, were to contain a suite of commodious rooms .equipped with all modern conveniences of a home. Twenty years ago, Ocean City experienced a mild sensation, when two, young men attempted to stem the fierce current, that swept around the wrecked Sindia, and affect a landing. The wreckers who were engaged in . removing the cargo, warned them of the hazard attending the feat, apart from the fact that no person was allowed to board the wreck. The swimmers however, paid no attention, and finally reached the hull in an exhausted condition. The foreman in charge of the wrecking gang, warned them against attempting to swim hack, explaining they could return in a little time, in the surf boat which would convey the wreckers to shore. The daring men, however, plunged into the sea, hut had it not been for the Knocking crew, and the assistance rendered them, the two would ' no doubt have perished. Only with difficulty and after heroic efforts were they saved. In the column luteal Happenings, twenty years ago; we find that the Rev. John H. Boswell, pastor of the _ First M. K. Church, was the Fourth of July orator for Diving Creek. That C. Howard Cchermerhorn and family, of Philadelphia, were at their cottage. 1237 Central Avenue for the Wummfr. That Thomas R. Fort," of the T. W. Price Companh, Philadelphia, had taken a cottage on "Wesley Avenue, for the summer. That the Rpworth league, of Camden .was planning an excursion to Ocean City.
