BISHOP GHAS. M. MEAD \0F DENVER, COLORADO, AIM. E. CHURCH eloquent and scholarly1' 1 discourse on spiritual ' 4! ' • . P analogies in nature The congregation which Sunday 1 morning, filled the auditorium and the 1 school annex, of the First Methodist 1 Episcopal Church to their utmost ' capacity, heard one ot the most interesting and scholarly sermons, ever 1 delivered in Ocean City. ' Bishop Chas. M. Mead, D.D., LL.D., of Denver, Colorado was the preacher, ' and his masterly conceived sermon, • might be added pa an appropriate ad- 1 ilenda, to the late Prof. Henry Drum- ' mdnd's great Work, "Natural Law in the Spiritual World." With a qualification howevery' for j ' Bishop Mead's discourse was in two j ( respects an improvement upon Prof.1 Drummond's woigc; to .wit, it was more intelligable and practical and in the >econd place, it was more scientific. This is a daringly audacious claim to make. Nevertheless it is made with , perfect confidence, on the ground that , while Bishop Mead drew ' many fas>ciuating analogues between the nat- ( ural and the spiritual world, between | , the operations of natural law and f spiritual forces; yet he did not con- ( fuse analogy with identity of law, as , Prof. Drummond does in his popular t work. Bishop Mead is obviously a close t student of nature, a student in the t scientific as well as in the poetical j sense. John Burroughs was a won- % ilerful student of nature as a poet; j but his scientific deductions are frequently very unscientific. Bishop Meaft is obviously moreover t a close student of science. With the accepted and well-approved teachings t of science, relative to the phenomena „ ami operations of nature, he is thoroughly conversant.- t And behind all the operations of „ nature he sees the finger prints of nature's God. The Creator is not lost in His creation. , Taking for his texj, the oft-quoted words which came from the lips of Christ, "I am the Bread of Life", Bishop Mead, launched out into won- j derfully instructive series of spiritual; analogies, drawn from the world and I operations of nature. He emphasized how the natural j bread, is the joint production of spiritual, natural, and human forces, j Springtide is the season of budding life. The seed comes under the hands of the Divine Chemist in the laboratory of nature, and man by cultivation
dnd carer&bntributes a share in the 1 1 task of producing bread. ' trod needs the agencies of nature, ; and rJWn; man cannot do without God, I and God's bread producing agencies j ■ ! buried in the soil.-S God and man I meet one at each end of the cornstalk, j Applying the illustration to the spiritual realm, the Bishop, elaborated f" the truth, tfljjiLJnimnn redomp- j | tion is a joint eiftSrprKe between God and man. God redeems. when mdn is willing t to be redeemed. , -A loaf of bread on the table, or in '' I the pantry, will give peither satisfac- ' t tion nor strength. It ih|ist be (Sjpen, assimilated, and 1 r by processes of nature, ' into bone, brain, blood and flesh. j An academic or a historical Christ, ' can redeem no soul. The Bread of ' Life must be assimilated. It mu.-t ^ . lie transmuted into moral bone ^nil • . musclfc, into spiritual fibre and tissue. ' , The Christ of history, must become i a Christ of personal experience. A r formal acknowledgement of the exist- ; J ( i ence of Christ, an intellectual con- ' ; fession of Christ, is of no avail. Christ J 1 [ must become in his character and j spirit, the food of the immortal iu ! man, or man cannot grow in grace :J and the likeness of the Saviour. ' It transpired that Bishop Mead, had ' 1 served with the 'American forces in 1 the great world war. Recalling the experiences of those days, he drew soniB very effecting il1 lustrations of the sacrificial clement ' in life as the seed must die to pro- , ' duce bread, so roust the material and ' the carnal in man die, to give birth 1 to the spiritual. j 1 The large congregation bung upon j ' ' the learned divine's message.. Script- ] ' 1 ural and evangelical it was, couched j '• ' exquisite language, a literary cameo ! ' with the genius of gospel preaching*' pulsating through every sentence. J ' A choice selection of classic music j was rendered by the Quartette, in | truly artistic style. The combination is superb, balance j ; uniform, and the interpretation j 1 scholarly. - I The solo rendered was an exceed-. < i Ingly fine contribution, given in the, I spirit of reverence and worship. 1 sentinel want ads pay <
